Today's Happy Hour Soundtrack...

...which spilled over into the inaugural edition of After Dinner Whiskey Hour, 2012.  That prolly should be "ADWH Lite," because we won't be sitting out on the verandah after dark, doin' that star-gazing thang like we usually do during that time.  But it WAS ADWH by strict definition, coz it was (a) after dinner and (b) we were drinkin' whiskey.  But we digress, coz we're supposed to be on about the music, which was Da Blooz for the most part.  Like this:

You don’t have to explain baby
Don’t you worry about it
Cause I’ll be okay
You see, pain ain’t nuthin new
Well it’s sure not the first time
And it probly won’t be the last
OTOH, it might could be the last (time), given our current outlook and attitude.

Apropos o' Da Blooz... Blog-Bud Ivan put up a tutorial on singin' the blues which every good blues aficionado should read.  It's mostly all true, too.

STOP PRESS!  THIS JUST IN!  Just got off the phone with SN1, who's rolling into P-Ville as we speak.  Let us now make American Noises, like Woo-HOO! and such!  Hockey Night In Portales!  Beer!  And lots of it!  I can't say this is totally unexpected, as we knew he was comin'.  But we thought he'd be in tomorrow, not tonight.

Best news I've had today.

ADWH*... Which Turns Out To Be Nuthin' More Than a Kitteh Update

* After Dinner Whiskey Hour, in case you're in need of explanation.  OTOH, you could always google it.  Numbah THREE, Bay-bee!

So.  The kittehs are alive and well, if somewhat deficient in the situational awareness department.  Case in point:

 In the general vicinity
 You lookin' at ME?
Just hangin' out by The Green Hornet
Kitteh, departing

So... they hung around for a bit and then it was off to explore places unknown.  The kittehs have kinda-sorta (and grudgingly) accepted my presence in the way all cats do.  When I came out of El Casa Móvil de Pennington earlier this evening to furl the awning they were hangin' around the car carrier and didn't scamper off when I arrived on the scene.  No... they just sat there and eyed me as I went thru the motions of raising the awning, lookin' for all the world like they were intrigued, when I know they weren't.  But they still kept their distance, as feral cats do.

Mama Cat was conspicuous in her absence this evening but that doesn't mean she wasn't around... somewhere.

No ADWH soundtrack tonight... Pandora was throwing some kinda hissy-fit and wouldn't load on my spiffy new phone.  So we simply entertained ourselves by listening to the manic chirping of the birds, which was OK by me.

Tonight's ADWH Soundtrack

Just in from ADWH which, truth be told, was After Dinner Whiskey TWO Hours and then some.  We went out sometime around 1900 hrs and watched our skies go from bright blue to pink to sandstone twilight to purple and then to black.  It was one of those nights where we simply didn't want to go back indoors -- finest kind, in other words.

Our soundtrack was excellent, as well (as always and ever), with oh-so-many candidates for the sampling that is our post on this subject.  Lotsa Dylan, lotsa Neil Young, and a smattering of traditional blues... and it's the Trad Blues that wins.  Here's Lightnin' Hopkins doin "Katy Mae Blues:"

You know some folks say she must be a Cadillac,
but I say she must be a T-model Ford
Yeah, you know some folks say she must be a Cadillac,
but I say she must be a T-model Ford
Yeah, you know she got the shape all right, but she can't carry no heavy load
Heh.  Cuts right to the chase, Ol' Lightnin' does.  Those Cadillac girls beat the Model Ts every time.  There's much to be said for the "built for comfort, not speed" school of thought.

I mentioned Dylan... and there were lots of Dylan tunes to choose from.  I heard "Tangled Up in Blue," one of my absolute faves, and "Shelter From the Storm," yet another fave.  The lyrics, in part:
Suddenly I turned around and she was standin' there
With silver bracelets on her wrists and flowers in her hair.
She walked up to me so gracefully and took my crown of thorns.
"Come in," she said, "I'll give you shelter from the storm."

Now there's a wall between us, somethin' there's been lost

I took too much for granted, got my signals crossed.
Just to think that it all began on a long-forgotten morn.
"Come in," she said, "I'll give you shelter from the storm."
Yeah... it was like that.  More than you'll ever know, Gentle Reader.

But it was old, old Dylan that I heard tonight and those were the tunes I liked the best.  Here's one such... a 1962 recording of "Girl From the North Country:"

Good Lord... were we... and he... ever that young?  Really?

Just In From ADWH*

* After Dinner Whiskey Hour

Just a couple o' things... the first of which is good news, kinda-sorta.  It was two weeks ago when I last provided a kitty update and I feared the worst had happened at that point in time.  I'm pleased (?) to report the kittehs are alive and well but seemed to have increased their range... which is to say they're no longer hangin' about the premises of ECMdP.  They've increased their number by one, too.  Whereas there used to be four kittens there now are five.  I know for a fact I could not have possibly missed that fifth kitteh, seein' as how the four of 'em provided me with a couple o' weeks worth o' entertainment.  And there were only four... trust me on that.

So where did kitteh number five come from?  Ah, sweet mystery o' life... (The pic is a long-lens shot of but one kitty as they seem to have adopted an aversion to me of late.  I think they know sumthin'... or sense it.)

―:☺:―

I downloaded Pandora for Android a couple o' few days ago and am mightily disappointed.  Not in Pandora itself, mind you... which remains the best thing since sliced bread... but in Sprint's 3G network, which doesn't support the Pandora feed well.  Which is to say the feed is plagued with drop-outs, which do not occur with any rhyme or reason.  Yesterday and the day before I had to quit listening during Happy Hour, because all those damned drop-outs made the feed unlistenable (which Firefox tells me isn't a real word, but I know different).  But tonight?  The feed worked perfectly and so provided the soundtrack for ADWH.  One such tune:

The words had all been spoken
And somehow the feeling still wasn't right
And still we continued on through the night
Tracing our steps from the beginning
Until they vanished into the air
Trying to understand how our lives has led us there

Looking hard into your eyes

There was nobody I'd ever known
Such an empty surprise to feel so alone
Ah, carry me back to those halcyon days o' the 70s... when I was a sensitive seventies kinda guy, the biggest bennie about bein' so was that I got laid a lot.  You may laugh, especially if your name happens to be Morgan, but it frickin' worked.  We ain't so sensitive these days, nor do we get laid as much.

And those lyrics?  Too close to home, by half.  Still and even, the song evokes the nicest of memories.  Very nice.

Tonight's ADWH Soundtrack

So... there I was... deep in the '80s and '90s... staring up at the sky and wonderin' which song to choose to illustrate tonight's After Dinner Whiskey Hour Soundtrack.  There was much goodness to choose from... Collective Soul, Wallflowers, Matchbox Twenty, Bowie, Soul Asylum, The Cure, 3 Doors Down, Nirvana, Lifehouse, Cranberries... the list goes on and on.  The thing I like most about Pandora (I was listening to the Collective Soul station) is it's very much like one of your best friends perusing your music collection and selecting a bunch of tunes he or she'd like to hear... kinda like this:

That would be my buddy John, doin' just that, at my New Year's Eve party in Ra-cha-cha, 1999.  But we digress.  Here's what we chose from tonight's soundtrack, for starters:

Now I tell you openly
You have my heart so don’t hurt me
For what I couldn’t find

Talk to me amazing mind

So understanding and so kind
You’re everything to me

Oh my life is changing everyday

Every possible way
Though my dreams, it’s never quite as it seems
’cause you’re a dream to me
Dream to me
The Cranberries, circa 1994, or deep in Former Happy Days.  "Dreams" is the winner of tonight's ADWH sweepstakes but it was a near run thang with this, from Soul Asylum:

Can you help me remember how to smile
Make it somehow all seem worthwhile
How on earth did I get so jaded
Life's mystery seems so faded

...

Everything is cut and dry

Day and night, earth and sky
Somehow I just don't believe it
It's been years since I've heard this particular tune, even though I own the album.  The song... and the entire album, actually... is one of those things that tend to make me... ummm... misty, recalling as it does a particularly painful period of time.  But time heals most wounds and it was good to hear this tonight.  Or as good as it gets, I suppose.

And then there's this:

Kinda sorta like last night's sunset, but not nearly as good.  There wasn't nearly as much pink...as in Jesusphine's swaddling clothes... and much more gold.  But it'll do, eh?

Dog Days Upon Us

Didja ever wonder about that term?  Wonder no more (I loves me some Wiki!).  And they are well and truly here.  We stretched ADWH out until 2330 hrs last evening and checked the temp as we came in from the verandah, just for grins and giggles.  It was 89 degrees at that hour.

We did something we almost NEVER do, given it's gonna be another hot one today (forecast: 108), and that would be setting our alarm phone for 0700 hrs this morning, all the better to get out and about before the broiling begins.  And we did... hitting the streets around 0800 hrs to run our errands (we had to get caffeinated first, yanno?), which we completed in about an hour and a half.  It was nice to run around town in The Green Hornet with her top down and Mick serenading the locals with a suitably loud rendition of Loving Cup, which I'm most certain all within earshot appreciated.  Or not, about which I truly don't care coz it was for me, anyhoo.  So we're done, what with having unloaded our groceries in the relatively cool temperatures of 85 degrees and having received our minimum daily requirement of al fresco motoring.  I'd forgotten how good it feels to get up with the rest of the world.

―:☺:―

And then there's this from My Buddy Ed In Florida...
He didn't like my casserole
And he didn't like my cake.

He said my biscuits were too hard.

Not like his mother used to make.

I didn't perk the coffee right.

He didn't like the stew.

I didn't mend his socks

the way his mother used to do.

I pondered for an answer,

I was looking for a clue.

Then I turned around and smacked the shit out of him . . .

Like his mother used to do.

******************************

I love a good poem, don't you?
Heh.  I loved every little thing both of my wives did, always... and even most of my girlfriends, too.  My Mama didn't raise no dummies.

Tonight's ADWH Soundtrack

Two tunes from 1985 or thereabouts.  First... Simple Minds:

The above is almost an afterthought, mainly because we were listening to Pandora's Roxy Music station this evening... and only because we had a yearning to hear this tune:

We were NOT disappointed; even though it was late into the evening before Avalon began wafting forth from the Evo.  The timing was exquisite because the night sky had just about gone all black and the stars were making themselves known... and there's no finer music by which to watch the stars come out.  I'm speaking mainly and specifically of Yanick Etienne's ethereal back-up vocals... which are guaranteed to raise the hair on my arms no matter HOW many times I hear the tune.  About which, this:
“Bryan and I could hear this girl from the Haitian band next door singing, and we thought, ‘Wow! What a voice! We've got to get her singing some backing vocals on “Avalon.”’ That was Yanick Etienne, who didn't speak a word of English. She came in with her boyfriend/manager and we described to him what we wanted and she sort of sang the choruses and the [word] ‘Avalon’ — the great sound that is on there. Then we said, ‘Can she try and do something free at the end?’ and we ran the end of the track and she did absolutely nothing. So I said, ‘No, we want her to sing anything that she would want to sing, totally free.’ So the second time we ran the tape, she sang exactly what you hear on the record at the end.

“Bryan then went straight out and re-sang his vocal properly, because he was so inspired by Yanick's singing. I remember Bryan's manager walked in the room and Bryan was just finishing his vocal. We were doing the playback and I'd never seen the look on his eyes before. He went, ‘Jesus f****** Christ! That is incredible!’ Well, we knew it was a really high point of the evening. I remember going, ‘Wow! We have really created something special here.’ That is how I felt. Then we mixed it the next day with Bob.

“It was one of those turnaround things, where the original track was just about to be thrown in the can. And then suddenly, we did a completely different version of the song that just made the record for me,” Davies concludes. “I thought, ‘That's it. That completes the record!’ I remember we had dinner a couple nights later, and I asked Bryan, ‘What are you going to call the album?’ and he said, ‘I'm going to call it Avalon,’ and I thought, ‘Yeah. Of course.’”
Of course.

Avalon, the album, came out in 1982 but I bought it on CD around the time I retired from the Air Force in 1985, which is also the year I bought my first CD player; the two events went hand in hand.  The CD has since gone missing and I have a feeling The Second Mrs. Pennington took it with her when she walked out of my life in 1998.  She took a lot of my/our music... including about two-thirds of the classical music inventory... but that's another story entirely and one that won't be told here.

The Simple Minds album, OTOH, was current in 1985 and was high on our personal play list at the time, especially "Don't You (Forget About Me)".  That was a Good Year, 1985... one of the best.

Tonight's ADWH Soundtrack... and Other Stuff

Crosby, Stills, and Nash:

Holding you close undisturbed before a fire
The pressure in my chest when you breathe in my ear
We both knew this would happen when you first appeared
My lady of the island
The tune is a long-time favorite and carries many, many memories... happy and otherwise... from Former Happy Days, but those memories are mostly happy. Mostly.

―:☺:―

Today was a typical Fall Saturday which is to say it's been mostly all football, all the time.  We watched ND pull one out on the road and go to 2-2 on the season.  That game was a near-run thang and it's gonna be a rare win for the Irish this season, methinks.  We then watched Moogie's Hogs lose to Alabama... and they were never really in that game.  I had flashes of hope but Bama was just too, too strong.  And now we're watching a contest featuring another team from the Supremely Egotistical Conference, which is to say LSU-West Virginia.  There were times during this game when I thought about turning it off, simply coz it looked like the Mountaineers were outclassed.  But those West Virginian guys refuse to give up and the game is still in doubt as I type (with 11 minutes left in the fourth quarter).  So I'll stay tuned to the game as I construct this post...

We took care of other bid'niz before we settled in to an afternoon of football indolence, which is to say we went out to Cannon Airplane Patch earlier in the day to re-stock the likker-locker and do a commissary run.  About the commissary: shopping takes on a whole nuther meaning when you know you (a) have a big-ass fridge and freezer and (b) have about six times the cabinet space you used to have when you were mobile.  So... we now have three different varieties of Häagen-Dazs in the freezer and about as many different cuts of meat.  And we won't go into what's in the crisper nor on the shelves of the fridge. Suffice to say we are well-stocked and we are MOST happy about that.

―:☺:―

We mentioned in passing that we would begin to actually cook again, once thangs got back to normal.  Well, we're not near normal as yet but we HAVE begun cooking.  We broke the seal on the oven this afternoon, constructing one of our favorite dishes... Viva La Chicken, about which there are several recipes extant on these here inter-tubes, this bein' just one.  I vary considerably from that recipe, using about two dozen tortillas, one whole HELLUVA lot o' green chiles, two cans o' mushroom soup, and about two pounds of shredded jack cheese in my variation.  Let's illustrate:

Note the big-ass pile of boned and shredded chicken at left and the big tub of Bueno brand green chiles.

The casserole just before goin' to the oven.  I ran out of Bueno chiles and had to substitute Ortega brand chiles to top off the casserole.  Note the left over tortillas on the cutting board.

You can't imagine how GOOD the premises smelled after I (a) boiled the chicken (with lotsa spices... primarily bay leaf, oregano, thyme, and basil, along with half an onion and three cloves of crushed garlic) and (b) took the casserole out of the oven.

And so dinner was served.

The next culinary project will be a London Broil, assuming I can find a good flank steak.  In the meantime this casserole will feed me for about the next three days.  Anything worth doin' is worth OVER-doin', no?

Tonight's ADWH Soundtrack

The Cars...

she tricks me into thinkin'
I can't believe my eyes
I wait for her forever
but she never does arrive
it's all mixed up
it's all mixed up
it's all mixed up
That first Cars album was absolutely brilliant and is yet another album I own on both vinyl and CD.  So it goes without sayin' (although I WILL) that this selection was more from the CD collection, which has been playin' virtually non-stop all day today.  And speaking of today... it was absolutely brilliant: we prolly got up to about 75 degrees (only!); so we threw all the windows open, turned off the AC, and turned up the stereo.  There's a lot to be said for taking Happy Hour and After Dinner Whiskey Hour on the verandah while enjoying full-fidelity from your sound system, as opposed to Pandora on the tinny but adequate Evo (cell phone).  I loves me some Fall weather.

The Perfect Song For Tonight's ADWH*

Mr. Thorogood...

Don't give me no lectures
'Bout stress and strife
So-ber-i-ety
Just ain't my way of life
You better change
Yes, I'm begging you please
'cause if you don't start drinkin'
I'm gonna leave
I've never really had this particular problem, given I've never been involved with someone who is or was a tee-totaler.  That practice would simply be a non-starter from the git-go.  That said, we've been blessed in previous lives with wives, consorts, and girlfriends who had a like mind when it came to the subject of alcohol.  We've even known and loved some wimmen who could drink us under the table.  Yeah, I'm lookin' at YOU, Kid.

So now it's out to the verandah to enjoy a balmy New Mexico evening with three fingers of Mr. Bulliet's fine, fine, fine rye whiskey.  And a cigar.

Tonight's ADWH Soundtrack

Some down 'n' dirty guitar work from Lucinda Williams and her band...

I don't want you anymore
cause you took my joy
I don't want you anymore
you took my joy

you took my joy

I want it back
you took my joy
I want it back
Complete lyrics here.  Hell, Lucinda... one place is the same as the next... you might could find some joy in P-Ville.  I've been to West Memphis and Slidell and I know from whence I speak.  footballer pictures

Tonight's ADWH Soundtrack

A one-hit wonder and the BEST of that particular genre, at that:

Oh, you don't know me, but you make me so happy
I tried to call you before, but I lost my nerve
I tried my imagination, but I was disturbed
I don't think I ever called a number written on a wall, any wall, but I sure as hell danced my ass off to this tune in the wayback.  There's quite a back-story to the tune, in case you haven't heard it.  I hadn't heard this tune in years upon years before tonite... and hearing it this evening made me smile.  A lot.

―:☺:―

In other news... I lied.  I said I wasn't gonna watch Barry's speech this evening but I did... watch it.  With my teevee muted, which is to say I watched but didn't listen.  The exercise was pretty instructive, in that a lot of my suspicions were confirmed.

Credit: Reuters/Kevin Lamarque
First and foremost among those suspicions was the speech was gonna be mostly a campaign speech; that suspicion was confirmed by the number of standing-O's the president received... from the Democrats.  The correct side of the aisle... the Republicans... remained seated, for the most part.  That told me nearly everything I needed to know.

Second: The Deity At Hand hates Democrats.  Why else would she make the great majority of 'em so damned ugly?  The camera panned into the audience periodically and we got to see Mrs. Pelosi (omigawd-ugly), Maxine Waters (jeezus!), Hillary (ecch!), Biden (heh), Sheila Jackson-Lee (yow), Charlie Rangel (nice suit, Charlie)... and on and on.  THAT was almost enough to make me turn the whole thang off, but I hung in there.  Why?  Because...

Third:  Boehner.  He may cry at the drop of a hat but his poker face while The One was going on and on... and on... was just fan-fuckin'-tastic.  I watched intently for eye-rolls but saw nary a one.  BIG props to the Speaker for that feat; I couldn't have pulled it off.

I still haven't read any post-speech reax, mainly coz I had other priorities... like After Dinner Whiskey Hour.  Never let it be said I don't have my head screwed on properly.

Tonight's ADWH Soundtrack

Divin' deep into the archives for some serious drinkin' music...

This wasn't the tune I was lookin' for*, but it'll do.  I remain impressed with the Tube O' You, given that the Siegal-Schwall Band wasn't exactly mainstream... outside o' Chicago.  I don't remember how I came upon them, but I know it had to be courtesy o' one o' my buds back in those lost days o' the '70s.  Be that as it may, I bought every one o' their albums I could get my hands on back in the day and committed several of those albums to tape before I shipped the vinyl off to SN2 during the Great Divorce Debacle o' 1999.  It was one o' those cassettes we dragged out for tonight's soundtrack, and we're REALLY glad we did.

*Well, DAMN!  Here it is!

Oh, HELL Yes!  It's a real pity that none of Siegal-Schwall's lyrics are available on the 'net... coz the lyrics are just amazin'.

Tonight's ADWH Soundtrack

Ah... take me back to those halcyon days of 1963 when I was a senior in high school and blissfully oblivious to the slings and arrows of the Real World... here's the lovely Doris Troy, singin' about how it took just one look to make her fall so hard...

Just one look and I fell so hard
In love with you, oh-oh, oh-oh
I found out how good it feels
To have your love, oh-oh, oh-oh
Say you will, will be mine
Forever and always, oh-oh, oh-oh
Just one look and I knew
That you were my only one
Oh oh-oh oh!
Ah, this conjures up visions of the Lovely Roxanne, the queen o' my teen-aged dreams and my first experience with rejection.  I fell for Roxanne with that proverbial "one look" and we had a whirlwind love affair that was never really consummated in the truest and most literal sense, but certainly NOT for a lack of effort on my part.  Many's the afternoon Roxanne and I rolled around in my bedroom with Doris croonin' in the background... me tryin' my damnedest and she just as determined that I would NOT get what I was after.  I don't think I ever encountered such firm and unyielding resistance during the rest of my life, or perhaps I got to the point where I could take "no" for an answer and moved on to more... ummm... productive endeavors.  Whatevah.

Still and even, we remained boyfriend and girlfriend for most of my senior year in high school and into the following summer.  The affair came to an abrupt end when I decided to enlist in the Air Force in that summer of '63 and left Roxanne to her own devices, which were many and varied.  That sad fact was brought home to me about six weeks later when I was the unhappy recipient of my first "Dear John" letter.  That hurt but I managed to get over it in short order, typical of the resilience of your average 18 year old.  We should be so resilient in our old age, Gentle Reader.

So... here's to ya, Roxanne.  I hope you're alive, well, and happy... and that you're givin' it up on a regular basis.

Added, somewhat later:  Linda does a damned good cover of this tune, as well.  Ronstadt released her version the year TSMP and I got married, or perhaps it was the summer before.  History DOES repeat itself.

Tonight's ADWH Soundtrack

What's the equivalent of blue-eyed soul when it comes to reggae?  This:

Girl you're too bad
Girl you're too rude
Everyman I speak to
Says he wants you
Girl you're too bad
Girl you're too rude
Everyman I speak to
Says he wants you
Heh. It's a curse, Darlin'... innit?

So, one could argue about blue-eyed reggae, like who is and who isn't.  And in arguing the proposition one could make a case for The Police in their Reggata de Blanc era.  Yeah, one could but one shouldn't.  So, don't.  The Police?  The Poseurs... when it comes to reggae. Keith, OTOH... yeah.  Like Coke, he's the Real Thang.

In other news... We saw three meteors tonight during After Dinner Whiskey Hour, one of which had a good chance of becoming a meteorite... which is to say coming into intimate and violent contact with Mother Earth.  If that happened the impact site was prolly somewhere down on the Mexico border, given the trajectory of the fiery display I witnessed.  All three of those things were quite amazing displays, given the happy circumstance of me looking in exactly the right place at exactly the right time.  When it comes to meteors you miss more than you see, as a rule.

Tonight's ADWH Soundtrack

Collective Soul...

Save me come tomorrow
Lead me to my urgency
See I'm no more no less

Of an angel
Than you'd have me be
Steady here I cast my lines
Only to expose
A weaker sense and
No constraint
Now my true self shows

But, don't bring me down

All right
Don't bring me down
Cause there's promise
In the night
Yeah, what he said.  There WAS promise in this night, but only if we had had suitable companionship.  Tonight's sunset was brilliant and was of a hue of pink that would have been suitable for Jesus' swaddling clothes, had Jesus been a she rather than a he.  I thought... however briefly... about running inside to get the camera and recording this sunset  for posterity but I just couldn't get off my ass, transfixed as I was.  So.  Sorry about that.

Back to female Jesus... I have a set of thoughts about that... if Jesus had been female... but we won't go THERE.  Suffice it to say I kinda-sorta think the world would have been a better place if we had had a matriarchy, instead of a bunch of sexually-frustrated priests fucking things up for about a thousand years before Martin Luther pounded his objections about the Catholic church up on the cathedral door.  I can't help but think the world could have been different if we were ruled by benevolent nuns during the Middle Ages.

But that's waaaay too deep for someone who just came in from a breathtaking sunset and a night full of starry, starry skies.  That and the fact I'm about half in the bag... so... disregard.  Or not.  I'm open to YOUR thoughts, if any.  Matriarchy... promise or peril?

Added, somewhat later and after perusing the vids that accompany that which I posted, as is my habit:

Life's river shall rise
She Said
And only the strong shall survive
She Said
But I'm feeling quite weak
She Said
Will you comfort and forgive me
She Said
Heh.  No fucking way, Darlin'.  Drown in it.

Malevolent thoughts aside, this has always been a favorite Collective Soul tune.

Today's Happy Hour Soundtrack...

... is a re-run.  We're listenin' to the Graham Parker station on meTunes Radio this afternoon and the very first tune we heard was "Protection."  "How perfect," thinks I, "and what a good tune for the Happy Hour blog post."  Further rumination led me to believe we'd done this one before and we were right.  Like this:

Tonight's ADWH Soundtrack

Graham Parker from Former Happy Days, i.e., 1979-80 or so...

So if you think that’s funny I’m not really laughing honey
Your love letters are confetti I ripped them up my hands were sweaty
And then those ghastly faces recur in nightmare places
Happy hour's come and gone much too short and much too long
This tune is yet another piece part of the soundtrack from my three-year sojourn in Ol' Blighty.  It's kinda funny-strange how the lyrics to any given song change meaning over the years, innit?  Apropos o' nuthin', this tune contains one of my favorite mondegreens.  Towards the end of the song when Parker sang...
It ain’t the knife in the heart that tears you apart
It’s just the thought of someone sticking it in, sticking it in
I heard "It's just Donna Summer, stickin' it in, stickin' it in..."  Ya gotta remember, that was 1979 and 1980.  Disco.  Oh, well... ya hadda be there.
Another from the same album (Squeezing Out Sparks, arguably Parker's best):

Without a doubt I gotta intercept
Must be time someone went shouted in their ear
You look all right in that cheap red dress
But every time you swish it round you make me disappear
Yes I’m aware of exactly what I’m doing
Making everything a mystery,
Don’t bother with it, it don’t bother me
Yeah, it don't bother me.  Right.
Well, it still doesn't bother me, yanno?  But I can't get no protection to this very day...

Saturday, Part Deux

Now playing in patios and parking lots EVERYWHERE:

Verandahs, too.  By way o' explanation... I heard this clip sometime during the way out and back to the base yesterday and I intended to work the vid into my ADWH post last evening.  It just slipped my mind, along with MANY other things that have fallen through the cracks in the last 36 hours or so.

Tonight's ADWH Soundtrack...

... is REALLY strange given I'm running Pandora's Quick Mix, which selects music from all your defined stations.  That means we've heard Glenn Miller followed by Lyle Lovett followed by Wes Montgomery followed by Sinatra followed by this...

Voulez-vous coucher avec moi, ce soir?
Voulez-vous coucher avec moi?
Mais certainement!  Ah... memories.  We could go there again but we'll settle for Johnnie Walker Green, a good cigar and better memories.

Tonight's ADWH Soundtrack

Steely Dan...

Like a gangster
On the run
You will stagger homeward
To your precious one
I'm the one
Who must make everything right
Talk it out till daylight

I don't care anymore

Why you run around
Break away
Just when it
Seems so clear
That it's
Over now
Drink your big black cow
And get out of here

(And the colored girls sing: so outrageous... so outrageous)
Get outta here...
