Rather Random...

I don’t listen to Rush Limbaugh but I used to once upon a time, and I don’t particularly like Rush Limbaugh but I agree with about 97.6% of this rant:

Limbaugh is reading an editorial by Gary Hubbell that appeared in the February 9th edition of the Aspen Times Weekly, so this is old news. Still and even, old or not…there’s a lot of truth in that, eh? If you disagree, I’d like to hear about it…with an emphasis on “why.” If you have the time and inclination, of course.

I wouldn’t call myself an Angry White Man. But I am disturbed at the way things are going in this country, so I most definitely relate to the sentiments in Mr. Hubbell’s piece.

I posted about Blogger Play at some point in the distant past (“distant past” being in blogging terms, not in real life), but I’m danged if I can find it. What it is, aside from being a serious time-waster, is a random selection of photos posted on some of the millions of blogs hosted on Blogger. You’ll see some real gems from time to time, and the cool thing is you can stop the slide-show, back it up, or fast forward. Check it out if you haven’t already. Make sure you have some time to spare coz you might be there for a while…

This is useful, in that geeky sort of way that floats MY boat: Country Codes of the World. Most are intuitive, a few are not. You can zoom the illustration, as well. Yet another time-waster, if you want it to be. Or not.

(h/t: Will, at MS-NBC’s Clicked…which is another cool time-waster in itself.)

Today’s Pics: More from The Wall. No, not that wall…the one I posted yesterday. The one on Turkey’s beautiful Black Sea coast. The first pic is taken standing upon the most ancient of fortifications while looking north at the most modern of fortifications…of a sort, and at the time. These modern fortifications, and those like them, endure only in our memories and in certain places on these here inter-tubes, which may or may not be permanent in nature. One hopes, and all… but still. One never knows. I use the term “fortification” when referring to the monitoring site in the sense we were sentinels on the far-flung walls that bordered the Evil Empire. The work was quite serious, and we took it seriously... as all sentinels throughout time have done.

The second pic was taken from the wall looking down upon a Sinop city street. You’ll note a modern tiled roof that apparently extends out directly from the wall I’m standing upon. One of the more interesting things about this ancient wall…which exceeded ten feet in thickness, in places… was the fact the Turks built modern homes and businesses directly into the wall. Some of the residences were mere hovels that consisted of hollowed-out spaces in the wall, converted to living quarters of a sort. Other buildings used the city wall as one of four walls for the new building… always the rear wall, for obvious reasons… and some of those buildings were two or more stories high.

And the third pic? Just your standard yet gratuitous “pretty girl” pic that happens to fit in with the current meme. You’re welcome.

  1. That article is very interesting. But he has a point. There are a lot of angry white men around here in Okievillle.

The pictures are great. I wonder what the "pretty girl" is thinking.

  2. Buck, I couldn't agree more with Gary Hubbell's piece.
Sticking a label on someone is supposed to make them part of a larger group. For my part, one could call me an Angry White Man, but there are many others in this group that I might just not care to have anything to do with.

  3. That is a pretty girl. Speaking of pictures of girls, did Consuelo know you were taking her pictures with plans to put them on the web? I saw her last night at a ball game and thought about mentioning it to her, but wondered "What if she didn't know?". Didn't want to get you in trouble with her. You do NOT want to be on her bad side! LOL!

  4. Pretty lady at The Wall!

I don't agree with Limbaugh 100%, but I really like him as a person and as an entertainer. I agree with this rant, too.

  5. Ashley sez: I wonder what the "pretty girl" is thinking.

She's thinking about me, of course. ;-)

I'm joking, kinda sorta. She was having a hard time in her marriage at that point, but we weren't a serious item until two years later. She's the girl I wrote about on 2/20/2008.

Cat: I fit the bill in some aspects, as well. The key, of course, being in some aspects.

Jenny: I wore my "I'm blogging this" tee shirt to the events and made it plain what my intentions were... before I took the pics. Consuelo knows, in other words.

Phlegmmy: I looked upon Limbaugh as an entertainer back in the day when I listened to him, as well. He IS good.

  6. Buck, the line from that recording that resonated with me was the one that said, "The thought of killing someone that needs killing doesn't particularly bother him." If you read my most recent comment over at Barry's place (on the other colonel's thoughts on torture) you'll see why.

  7. Like you Buck, I don't listen to Rush much anymore....heard it all, and when it comes down to it....I'm farther right and much more independent that El Rushbo.

Bottom line is though, I'm not angry, but I just refuse to acknowledge left wing loons and their BS political views(including those a few in my own family that hold), life is to short to hang around with fools.

  8. I, too, agree with Gary Hubbell's piece. Most of the people I know are angry white men. I thought Catmoves line, "but there are many others in this group that I might just not care to have anything to do with" interesting. Although I am not sure who Catmoves is thinking of, every group has those associated with it that give the group a black eye. I listened twice to the piece, but did not find any real undesirable traits listed. Just out of curiosity, I would like to know who Catmoves would not want to associate with.

The girl at the wall is beautiful. Sinop city photos are just fascinating.

Well, there are Lefties and then there are Moonbats. I respect the Lefties and abhor the 'bats. I think we're on the same page, no?

Doc: Read your comment at Barry's... thanks for the links. I agree with you completely. Isn't that what the administration is saying, vis-a-vis waterboarding... i.e., "We don't do stuff like that, except in extraordinary circumstances?"

Lou said: Just out of curiosity, I would like to know who Catmoves would not want to associate with.

I can't speak for Cat, but as for me... Too many outright racists have been associated with the term "Angry White Man." Those are the folks I don't want to be associated with.

re: Sinop pics. I still have a few left and will dole them out over the coming day or three.

Mushy: Not to be redundant or anything, but I agree. ;-)

  10. Have to say I agree with most of the Hubbell piece, Buck. I don't know how angry I am - at least right at the moment - but most of that fits.

  11. I wondered if the racist assoication with angry white guys might be the problem. I thought in Hubbells piece he said something like " they are not racist and are willing to give everyone a fair chance..." Yet, I can see how the name makes it sound racist. Maybe it should be called Angry Americans, because I fit the description pretty darn close.

He did say that, and you're right, Lou...the label brings out weird connotations. I like your Angry Americans, except for one thing...the 'bats are angry, too. Probably more so than conservatives. BDS, ya know. ;-)

Jim sez: I don't know how angry I am - at least right at the moment - but most of that fits.

Agreed, Jim. Or "me, too!" Take yer pick! ;-)
