Good Stuff

Lex put up some great posts today and yesterday. If you ever saw "The Bridges of Toko-Ri," then you need to get yourself over to Lex's place and read this. Even if you've never seen the movie, you still need to go. Great stuff. And browse a bit while you're there. You'll be better for it!

  1. I first arrived at a Wakkanai, Japan, Nov 59 as an A2c 20230, the Air Force was paid once a month at that time and as luck would have it I arrived at my base the day after the paymaster left I had left home with five dollars in my pocket and traveled 12000 miles and arrived at my new base and $.36 left in my pocket. Boy did I ever make friends fast and borrowed money fast. I had to have money to get through a full month before I got paid again. Fortunately I found a very understanding and friendly airman that was a very good man and he loaned me I think probably $20 which was lot of money in those days and that was more than enough to get me through the month. And of course when I got paid at the end of the month, I promptly paid him back and he was a dear and very good friend from then on. They were working on the compound and they were using Japanese nationals to do the work. I enjoyed my stay at Walkkanai but at the end of the tour they promoted me to A1C to go to Germany, so I took it, I had to extend my enlistment by one year. I had some good friends their, some how I ended up being the Drum Major in our little Drum and Bugle Corp. When the base commander left we took the Drum and Bugle Corp to the Train Station for a ceremony to see him off, his adjutant came over and gave me a bottle of Jack Daniel and said it was for me and the boys. For those you were there then, you will understand the following statement. As the train was leaving the commander leaned out and shouted I.H.T.F.P. Well we got back to the airman's club and someone said hey you know your fly is unzipped? I had stood out front of the D&BC and went through the whole ceremony with my fly unzipped. That's just one of the fond memories. You can email me at donmcbroom@hotmail.com
