Who Knew?

Wally-World sells fresh fish!

They're pretty pricey and it'd take a lot of 'em to make a meal.  I passed.

OK, I'll freely admit we're scrapin' the bottom o' the blogging barrel.

Cheesy Videos XXVII: A Sop to St. Paddy's Day

Alternate title: "Scrapin' the bottom o' the blogging barrel, yet again."

Never let it be said we don't celebrate the holidays.

Update, 1810 hrs:  I remembered I had a photo of the band on this cigar.  Here it is:

A picture is worth 1,000 words, or one cheesy video.  Or sumthin' like that.

Scrapin' the Bottom o' the Bloggin' Barrel XII

Life is warmer and cozier now that the Brown Truck O' Happiness has come and gone... leaving me with these:

Yes... our tootsies are warm and comfortable, as we speak.  And the old slippers have been disposed of, with a suitable send-off.  They served me well.

Scrapin' the Bottom o' the Bloggin' Barrel XI

Today's major accomplishment at left... two-thirds of the CD inventory racked, stacked, but not alphabetized.  We did give a nod and a wink to organization (heh) by grouping all the important stuff together... which is to say the Beatles, Van Morrison, Lyle Lovett, and the Rolling Stones... and all the multi-disc sets, like the nine volume Complete Stax/Volt Singles, the six volume Atlantic R&B box set, the three volume Earth, Wind, and Fire set... yadda, yadda, yadda.

Today was the first time I'd  gone through ALL my CDs in at least eight years and I was amazed at some of the dreck I found.  Like... how did a Shania Twain album get into my house?  Likewise with Counting Crows (I hate their whiny lead singer but kinda like "Rain King," which is prolly why the album is here), Dave Matthews Band (two albums... TWO!  I blame that on The Second Mrs. Pennington) and a couple o' few others I'm too embarrassed to list here (hint: one female "singer," whose last name rhymes with fairy).

There's no accounting for taste... it's ALL in our mouths.

We are EXCITED:

That shipment is this.  Woo-HOO and other typically American noises of elation!

Scrapin' the Bottom o' the Bloggin' Barrel IX

We're still acclimating ourselves to the new toy phone which is turnin' out to be quite a laborious and time-consuming process.  But it's not without rewards, given the joys of bein' able to surf these here innertubes, send and receive e-mail, so on and so forth, from any place there's suitable signal strength, albeit at speeds slower than what we're used to.  But the speed she is adequate, I suppose.  The camera, however, is not.  Adequate.  Witness:

That's a shot of last night's After Dinner Whiskey Hour libation, which was actually and pedantically After Dinner G&T Hour.  The only notable thing about that photo (which was re-sized to 30% of the original) is the complete and total absence of ANY condensation on that ice-cold glass.  Ya gotta love single-digit humidity when the temp is in the 90s, as it was when that pic was snapped.

Back to the subject at hand...  Now I suppose the quality of that photo is adequate for sneakin' a "People of Wal-Mart" shot or to grab sumthin' when your only other option is grabbin' nuthin'.  That said, the camera in the Evo is graphic proof that megapixels ain't everything when it comes to cameras.  My grab-shot Canon only has five megapixels (it's sumthin' like six years old, too), as opposed to the Evo's eight, and the photo quality compared to the Evo's is of the night and day sort.

Thus endeth today's petty criticism.  And now it's off to The Big(ger) City™ and Cannon Airplane Patch for to run some errands.

Scrapin' the Bottom o' the Bloggin' Barrel VIII

Another installment in a series o' occasional posts that fall into the category of "when all else fails."  I forgot to tell ya about one of THE most important things to happen in my so-called life, Gentle Reader, to wit: we have found another wash'n'fold service.  And none too soon, either, as we'd exhausted the Emergency Tee Shirt supply last week and were down to wearin' stuff we reserve for Corporate Casual days, which is to say shirts with actual collars and Dockers.  I just HATE havin' to look my age, yanno?

So... here's what 25 pounds o' laundry looks like:

What costs 25 Yankee Dollars, including the spiffy gift wrapping:

Ahem.  Thank The Deity At Hand for small gifts, as it's said.  I just wish ladies bearin' gifts wouldn't call so danged early in the morning to tell me my laundry is ready for pick up, yanno?

Scrapin' the Bottom o' the Blogging Barrel VII...

... for the "Because it feels good when I quit" edition. Alternative title: "Motivational Speaking Gone Wrong."

I got this via a tweet from Iowahawk, who sees it as the Democrats' mid-term election strategy.  That works, too.

Scrapin' the Bottom o' the Blogging Barrel VI

Summerface...

AKA the I'm-gonna-be-in-uniform-in-a-week's-time-so-the beard-hadda-go face.  The 'stache still needs some work, though.  That said... we made a command decision.

In other news... I've been informed The Green Hornet will be released from the Automochine Hospital this afternoon.  We're anxiously awaiting a phone call to come pick her up.

Update, 1830 hrs or so:  That call I referenced above never came.  So if the mountain won't come to Mohammad, etc.  I rang up the Mazda Store and Repair Depot and was informed that "we" have problems.  It seems the service tech sheared off a bolt while reinstalling the exhaust system and "they" were in the process of "trying to figure out how to reattach the exhaust."  Which does NOT give us a warm and fuzzy feeling about (a) the competency of all involved and (b) the probabilty our vehicle will be finished and in a drivable condition come Monday.  We DO have a fall-back plan concerning Tuesday's "hard start" date for our trip up Nawth... but still.  Cold and pricklies prevail.  This is NOT good.

Scrapin' the Bottom o' the Blogging Barrel V

All you Gentle Readers no doubt have heard of 100-year floods, "hurricanes of the century," and other such "Perfect Storms."  Well, the same sorta thing happened within the small space that is the likker locker here at El Casa Móvil De Pennington.  We poured the very last of the gin into a G&T last evening and decided it would be best if we took stock of our remaining supply.  And we were horrified to find we were at or below the "restock" level on nearly all counts... a perfect storm of want, as it were.  So it was off to the Class VI store this morning.  And this is what we brought home:

I had to make two stops, one at the Class VI and the other at our local Liquor Emporium, given the Class VI was out o' Drambuie.  That breaks my hard and flinty ol' heart coz likker is about 20% cheaper at the base and there's none of that noxious sales tax to be paid to an oppressive gub'mint.  And we also had to add beer to the mix as DIL Erma and I made a hard run at the beer supply night before last.

Being the drinkin' sort is gettin' expensive these days; what you see above is well in excess of 100 Yankee Dollars.   Still and even: we do what we must.  And we MUST keep the likker-locker stocked.

―:☺:―

This falls in the "too good not to steal" category:
I recently picked a new primary care doctor. After two visits and exhaustive Lab tests, he said I was doing ‘fairly well’ for my age. (I just turned sixty-something.) A little concerned about that comment, I couldn’t resist asking him, ‘Do you think I’ll live to be 80?’

He asked, ‘Do you smoke tobacco, or drink beer, wine or hard liquor?’ ‘Oh no,’ I replied. ‘I’m not doing drugs, either!’

Then he asked, ‘Do you eat rib-eye steaks and barbecued Ribs?’ I said, ‘Not much…my former doctor said that all red meat is very unhealthy!’

‘Do you spend a lot of time in the sun, like playing golf, boating, sailing, hiking, or bicycling?’ ‘No, I don’t,’ I said.

He asked, ‘Do you gamble, drive fast cars, or have a lot of sex?’ ‘No,’ I said…

He looked at me and said.’Then, why do you even give a sh!t?
I ripped that off from Capt. Lex.  I know that most of you Gentle Readers frequent the former Naval aviator's place o' bid'niz and now's as good a time as any to encourage those of you who don't hang out with the fighter pilots, ground pounders, Jarheads, and the odd Zoomie or three, to make him a daily read.  The man is about as prolific and perceptive a blogger as exists anywhere on these inner-nets and his commentariat is the BEST, period.  The discussions at the Aviators' Lounge are always erudite and it's a rare person who won't learn something by dropping in there on a daily basis. Speaking of the comments yet again... the environment is polite and civil, above all else.  That's a rarity of the highest order.  So ends today's unpaid promotion.

But about that joke.  Good advice, on the whole, if'n ya add in "ride fast mo'sickles" to the mix.  There are a few things the Good Doctor included on his list that I don't do... like whack a lil white ball around a park (my life is largely frustration-free and I wanna keep it that way), boat or sail (El Casa Móvil De Pennington in her advanced age is a money pit of more than sufficient depth, thankyouverymuch), and I don't hike or bicycle due to physical limitations.  And then there's the sex thing.  We're living a life of self-imposed celibacy which has no inherent virtue, contrary to what monks or priests might tell you, and absolutely NO reward as far as I can tell.  Well, check that.  I said I live a life that's largely frustration-free, and that would include Honey-Do lists, command performances with people I don't care for but she does, and miscellaneous nagging.  I consider that an acceptable trade-off.  YMMV, of course.

Added, 1530 hrs:  Restocked, Part II.  I'm just back from a trip up to the mail kiosk where I found these beauties... a box of Acid Nastys... the perfect little cigar for those times when ya don't wanna go whole hog.  And just in time for Happy Hour, too.  Dang.  Sometimes life is just so good I can't stand it.  But we shall muddle through.  Somehow.

Scrapin' the Bottom o' the Blogging Barrel IV

The Navy does things up right and proper, to include sending out engraved invitations for its ceremonies, as you can plainly see.  There's much to be said for tradition... even though it's a rare thing when I'll actually admit that, let alone say something/anything nice about the Company of Squids.

Now just to get back in character... I'm fresh out of Summer Whites.  As a matter of fact I don't recall ever being issued any of those.  Will I still be admitted if I wear my blues?  Gosh, I sure hope so.

Scrapin' the Bottom o' the Blogging Barrel III

Or... an update.  Or, further... trapped in the house.  I mentioned yesterday that I had my doubts the new laptop would arrive today as predicted, seeing as how it was in Anchorage when we posted.  But...

Well, dang.  How about that?

Am I the only one who's glad half and half is now sold by the half-gallon?

I hope not...

Scrapin' the Bottom o' the Blogging Barrel

What 45 Yankee Dollars worth o' laundry looks like...

That would be three bundles of clean clothes that weigh 30 pounds and measure... in the aggregate... 25"(w) x 14"(h) x 16"(d).  Some people will spend this amount or more on a single bottle of Veuve Clicquot and this gives them great pleasure.  It's the same thing with me and sent-out-laundry... it's just one of life's lil luxuries with which we indulge ourself.  The champagne of chores if you will, ergo: à votre santé!
