Scrapin' the Bottom o' the Blogging Barrel II

Am I the only one who's glad half and half is now sold by the half-gallon?

I hope not...

  1. So the accompanying 55 gallon drum of coffee sits outside?

And OK, since I’ve seen it now recently a couple times, what the freak is in that shaker, pure cane sugar?

  2. tim - probably "Sugar in the Raw." AKA turbinado sugar. It's unrefined. I use it in my coffee, and in the rub for my pulled pork.

  3. Wow. It's as hot here in PA as in Portales...and it's NOT a dry heat, either.

Yup - that's like a two-day supply. And Andy has it right: Sugar in the Raw.

WWW: Thank GOD for that "dry" thang, too... coz it is HOT outside.

  5. No chilly creamer type stuff to cool the coffee. Must be hot and pretty strong (but not TOO strong).

I use powdered milk -- no, not creamer, powdered milk. That way I never buy milk, it doesn't go bad, and if I need milk for a recipe it tells you on the box the ratios for mixing.

And Sweet-n-Low. (Sigh. Don't want to get too chubby just from coffee.)

  6. Drink mine black. No sugar.

Community w/chicory, Mello Joy, Nakatosh (all Louisiana favorites). One cup'll do you the whole day.

But if I buy whatever is on sale at WalMart (Folgers, MX House, Store Brand), or take breakfast at IHOP, it takes 3.

  7. Kath: That's about as feminine a comment/reply as I've EVAH seen! ;-)

Andy: You're a purist. So's SN1, SN2 doesn't drink coffee (and there's one for ya: a career sailor who doesn't drink coffee. Go figure).

About Community Coffee... my great grandmother insisted on nothing but. Where she got that fetish I'll never know, since she was born in, raised in, and rarely left Atlanta. I remember being treated to ONE cup of coffee every morning in the summers I spent at my grandmothers' home, beginning around age 13. That was the beginning of my life-long love affair with the roasted bean.

Flash forward to late '63, most of '64 and every subsequent visit... each and EVERY drunken night out in N'Awlins always ended up at the Cafe Du Monde for coffee and beignets. Which was almost anti-climatic, as the coffee had a tendency to sober up even the most wasted of drunks (don't ask).

These days it's all Millstone coffee; I alternate between Colombian and Foglifter as my daily drink, but I also keep some French Roast on hand. "A pot a day, every day."

  8. I'm with you, Buck. I'd been buying pints for years, but just last week (no kidding, seriously) I said to myself, "Why not buy the half gallon? You'll use it eventually, and the stuff won't be hanging long enough to go bad."

  9. Hey Buck-

You're dead on the money about Comminity Coffee. One of my S-I-L's married into an old New Orleans family, which is how I learned of it.

You can order Community Coffee by mail. And sometimes they run promotions where the shipping was nearly free...

  10. No thanks, I take it strong, dark, rich bitter and black.

It's one of many things that make me so wonderful. ;-)

  11. Nobody mentioning the Ovaltine back there? What's up with that? Trying to work in a Christmas Story reference here, but that would take a decoder ring.

  12. Yeah, Seattle Andy...I was kinda' curious about that myself. Ovaltine...hmmmm.

Was always a Nestle's Quik guy myself. Just sayin'...

  13. Jim: The half-gallon package has only recently become available in my market. I previously bought it by the quart...

WWW: L-Andy has mentioned the mail-order thing in the past. Ain't technology GRANd?

It's one of many things that make me so wonderful. ;-)

    Heh. Noted. ;-)

Both Andys: I like chocolate in my coffee. I know: heresy. I've been known to let a piece of Hershey's semi-sweet dissolve in my cup, too. But the Ovaltine is instant-gratification and we're mostly about THAT. ;-)
