Weekend Update

The weekend wasn't the best o' times here at  El Casa Inmóvil De Pennington, but it was far from the worst.  Saturday was almost a complete bust, what with the Wings getting blown out in Toronto, the Irish losing yet another game they prolly should have won (and that makes four losses out of the last five games), and Florida State winning yet again in a squeaker against a scrappy Boston College team.  (I won't link the FSU game coz I hate actively dislike those prats.)  Saturday's only saving grace was near 70 degree temps, which enabled us to take an early Happy Hour on the verandah before the UCR all-day football orgy.

Sunday?  We hit our high o' 52 degrees before noon.  A miserable cold front blew in right after that and just before Happy Hour, dropping the temps into the 40s with a wind chill in the 30s.  That meant we took Happy Hour indoors, what with us being of sound mind and lacking a sufficient insulating layer o' fat to brave the verandah in that sort o' weather.  We used that time to finish off the book we were currently reading, took a short nap, and fixed dinner... consisting of leftover spaghetti and a salad... after which we watched at least four episodes of "Eat: The Story of Food" on the NatGeo channel.  The absolute BEST parts o' that show were the frequent appearances of Nigella Lawson.  Ooooh... what a hottie she is!  The second best part was the segment on beer, which you can see here (Blogger doesn't like NatGeo's embed code).  Ah, yes.  Beer is life, innit?

And then there's this...

Occasional Reader and Constant Correspondent Rob sent that along this weekend.  I suppose you have to be of a certain age to get that.  And I AM.

Onward and upward...

    1. Remember, we lived almost 20 yrs in Louisville, Buck, during which time the Cards won two National Championships (80 & 86) in roundball under Denny Crum. The football teams were very up & down (mostly down) in those days and played as an Independent, iirc against the likes of Tulane, Southern Miss, Memphis State, etc., even lost to Louisiana Tech in the 77 Independence Bowl in Shreveport under a series of three coaches while I was there. Fan attendance got so bad they were thinking of dropping down to Div 1-AA from 1-A but were saved by hiring
Howard Schellenburger the year after he won the National Championship at U of Miami. He turned it around and played a coast-to-coast schedule against all the maj conferences culminating in a 34-7 thrashing of Alabama in the 1991 Fiesta Bowl and a win over Mich State in the 1993 Liberty Bowl. The subsequent decision to join a weak Conference USA drove him away however. His lasting legacy is Papa Johns Football stadium which he planned and raised most of the money for. When he left they were still millions short, so John Schnatter, young founder of Pappa Johns (orig across the river in Jeffersonville, Ind in a closet of his father's bar) stepped in and plugged the hole, hence the name, tho the idea and 90% of the work was Schnellenbergers.

Since we left Louisville in '94 the school has had three or four head coaches, one Bobby Petrino, (now the head) twice after he was fired at Arkansas for a sexual scandal and another black guy, (Strong) whom they lost to Texas.

    2. PS: I should note that before they got their on-campus stadium the Cards played all their games at a combo baseball/football stadium at the Fairgrounds next to Freedom Hall where the cards played all their BB games until recently when they moved to a new complex downtown near the riverfront. Never attended a game in either new facility--left town too soon, lol.

  5. I'd seen that strip before and it's one of the best EVER.

My BC Eagles are such a tease. It's not only a scrappy team, it's a pretty good one. They could easily be sitting at 10 - 2, but they've more-often-than-not been one play away in the 4th quarter (and their kickers are not very good; no, not very good at all.) That trick play with the direct snap to Josh Bordner, and a pass to Murphy, was a brilliant call. But that's why Bordner was the backup QB last year and converted to WR this year - just an if bit late with it all. If, instead of trying to hit Murphy at the three yard line he had just tossed it to him out in the flat... Murph was wide open. Not a defender within ten yards, and he probably takes it to the house.
