Never attended a game in either new facility--left town too soon, lol.virgil xenophonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14577165785872035948noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18232353.post-12842320749212013782014-11-25T09:15:42.819-07:002014-11-25T09:15:42.819-07:00Remember, we lived almost 20 yrs in Louisville, Bu...Remember, we lived almost 20 yrs in Louisville, Buck, during which time the Cards won two National Championships (80 & 86) in roundball under Denny Crum. The football teams were very up & down (mostly down) in those days and played as an Independent, iirc against the likes of Tulane, Southern Miss, Memphis State, etc., even lost to Louisiana Tech in the 77 Independence Bowl in Shreveport under a series of three coaches while I was there. Fan attendance got so bad they were thinking of dropping down to Div 1-AA from 1-A but were saved by hiring
Howard Schellenburger the year after he won the National Championship at U of Miami. He turned it around and played a coast-to-coast schedule against all the maj conferences culminating in a 34-7 thrashing of Alabama in the 1991 Fiesta Bowl and a win over Mich State in the 1993 Liberty Bowl. The subsequent decision to join a weak Conference USA drove him away however. His lasting legacy is Papa Johns Football stadium which he planned and raised most of the money for. When he left they were still millions short, so John Schnatter, young founder of Pappa Johns (orig across the river in Jeffersonville, Ind in a closet of his father's bar) stepped in and plugged the hole, hence the name, tho the idea and 90% of the work was Schnellenbergers.

Since we left Louisville in '94 the school has had three or four head coaches, one Bobby Petrino, (now the head) twice after he was fired at Arkansas for a sexual scandal and another black guy, (Strong) whom they lost to Texas.virgil xenophonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14577165785872035948noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18232353.post-85536781947004737792014-11-25T07:49:28.737-07:002014-11-25T07:49:28.737-07:00Sigh. It's not only a scrappy team, it's a pretty good one. They could easily be sitting at 10 - 2, but they've more-often-than-not been one play away in the 4th quarter (and their kickers are not very good; no, not very good at all.) That trick play with the direct snap to Josh Bordner, and a pass to Murphy, was a brilliant call. But that's why Bordner was the backup QB last year and converted to WR this year - just an if bit late with it all. If, instead of trying to hit Murphy at the three yard line he had just tossed it to him out in the flat... Murph was wide open. Not a defender within ten yards, and he probably takes it to the house.Suldoghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07778845367184916684noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18232353.post-24282520140098913132014-11-25T06:05:32.874-07:002014-11-25T06:05:32.874-07:00@ Chris, Curt, and Craig: Thanks, guys.
