I've Been Doin' It Wrong

I recently learned I've been eating sushi wrong, after oh, say, 45 years or so.  This is supposedly how one does it:

OK,  Naomichi Yasuda is Japanese and he's a master sushi chef so there's no arguing with his credentials.  That said, I will continue to mix my soy sauce and wasabi together, thank you very much.  And I eat individual fish pieces with my fingers, not with hashi.  I know, I know... I'm a barbarian gaijin.

In other news....  Speakin' o' doin' it wrong, there's this:

Would someone please explain WTF that thing is eclipsing the sun?  It LOOKS like a hockey puck, kinda-sorta, but I don't think that's what this means.

Update, 1430 hrs:  All is explained in comments about that eclipse thing.  To my GREAT shame.

  1. I eat things the way I like to eat them. Not how someone says I should eat them.

I was recently chastised for putting the ginger on the roll and munching away. Meh.

I don't care how Yasuda-san or anyone else eats their sushi. I eat it my way. And this pleases me.

    Meh and double meh.

  2. Oh yeah, the wasabi ALWAYS gets mixed with the soy sauce. That's how we roll in Korea!

    1. The great cultural divide, eh?
I think, if I were Korean, I would break all of the rules just to spite the Japanese.

  3. I didn't know anything about how to eat sushi before, other than it goes into the pie hole.

That object has me baffled, too.
I was thinking it might be one of those stones they use in curling.
    We'll have to ask Suldog.

    1. Long ago and far away a Japanese lady of my (brief) acquaintance taught me the basics of the sushi ritual and I've stuck to that all my life. What works, works.

I'll take a curling stone as a possible explanation to that pic. Assuming it has a badly drawn or missing handle.

  4. College football starts tomorrow. That's a buckeye eclipsing the sun and Archie Griffin's jersey that he's wearing. Go Bucks!

    1. Thank you for that, Anon. It all makes perfect sense now. That said, I'd NEVER have posted this 'toon had I known this was all about THE Ohio State University, given I'm a Big Blue fan. O! The SHAME!

  5. Well, I was going to tell you and Skip it isn't a stone, but now you know the answer so anything I have to say is superfluous, such as this.

  6. Hmmm - I don't like sushi. I know...The Oracle loves the stuff but me? Meh.

  7. As Anonymous noted above, that would be a giant buckeye blotting out the sun; the supplicant on the ground is wearing Ohio State colors (indeed, Archie Griffin's number); I can't read it clearly, but it does seem to be signed to a Columbus paper. . .

And. . . a Big Blue fan? Why on earth would you want to do that to yerself? All bluster and stuck in the past, those guys are. You should sign on for a legitimate championship contender, like Gang Green up the road. (And, while I'm thinkin' of it, I'm wonderin' who the genius is who scheduled a rematch with Appy State; seriously no-win, that; just drags up all the painful memories from 7 years ago) (altho, the memories are positively mirthful for us Little Brothers up the road. . .)

I'm a fan of three teams, which is allowed by The Rules. Those teams are, in order, Notre Dame, Air Force and Michigan. I found out when I moved to Dee-troit you simply cannot be agnostic when it comes to Michigan - Michigan State. Pick one, my friends told me. Since about 75% of the folks I hung with were Michigan alumni or had other close connections to the school, I chose Michigan. True story, that.

Yer friends told you true. And, at the time you were choosing, there was probably some rational basis for choosing as you did. But that shit is over now. Come away from the Dark Side, Buck. . .

      ;)

Just be polite... that's all I ask.
