What I Should Be Doin' Tommorrow...

I should be attending this event...

... but I won't be there, except for the usual, customary, and somewhat reasonable "in spirit."  I agonized over the decision whether to travel out to Ol' Virginny or not for quite some time, but in the end I decided not to go.  There's a lot of disappointment all the way around but there's understanding, too.  I thank The Deity At Hand for that.

In that same vein... Buck had the UCR farewell events in his place o' bidniz last week and sent me a couple o' pics of the going-away gift his folks presented him.

That's a pretty nifty humidor, complete with an initial load of very high quality cigars.  His gift beats the Hell outta anything **I** ever got when I left a duty station, hands down.  Then again, he's a major and I was a Master Sergeant (at best), so I suppose there IS a bit o' difference in position.

  1. The final day at the office05 June, 2014 13:15

I once did a shadow box for our departing commander. He was ex-enlisted and made his way to LtCol before retirement. Having flown everything from Gliders, Fighters to Trash Haulers. It was a hell of a project, because I had to find Academy wings, and worst of all Sgt stripes. I searched everywhere and finally found a good looking one in a Las Vegas Army Surplus store. Damned Senior Airman rank! The commander wasn't expecting it, as I had secretly worked with his wife on the design, and when it was presented he was quite emotional, as his wife knew he would be. He was a rare boss, and I wouldn't have done it for anyone else (they tried). Good luck to your son, and may he make O-6 in his next job!

  2. Congrats to your son! The scary thing is that I remember when Majors were old relics from a distant past. Now I look at Majors and they look like teenagers. Where did the time go?

  3. @ Final: Thanks for the good words and ya done good with that shadow box you made. SN1 made one for me several years after I retired and it's always had a place of honor in my home, wherever or whatever the home was.

@ Tim: Thank ya, Sir. I share your feelings about "kids today." One of the main drivers in my decision to retire when I did was ALL the Loo-tenants looked like teenagers to me at that time. They still do, come to think on it. ;-)

  4. Congratulations to both of you Bucks. It's really good to see. I'd say it's Bucking Fantastic but I wouldn't want to strain the decency meters hereabouts. I see from the lid that young Major Buck has mastered the old trick of leaving a set of keys and his spare cover on his desk when goes out. People see that and always assume you are somewhere in the building/command area and not on a beach drinking mojitos or gin and tonic.

  7. Congratulations all the way 'round! That is one fine looking, nicely stocked humidor. Heck -- most LTCs look like children to me these days. Can't wait to see more pics.
