Yet Another Early Day

Olympic hockey is definitely messing with my sleep habits, which has seen me resort to using the alarm clock function on my phone more in the past week than I have in the past ten years.  We were up again this morning at oh-dark-thirty (0500 hrs, actually) to put the coffee on and prepare for an 0530 puck drop way off in Sochi... after which we watched the American men beat the snot out o' the Slovaks, 7-1.  Not a bad way to begin the tournament, eh?  The US men will face their first real test on Saturday when they play the Rooshians in what should be one of the better games in the preliminary round.  And another early damned day for me.

And then there's this:

There once was a time when that card would have been most appropriate for the occasion.  These days?  Meh.

Not so Meh... not EVEN:

The question isn't whether we'll be having an outdoor Happy Hour today, it's more like how long will it last*?  And note our forecast for Saturday and Sunday: 80 big-ass degrees!  Hell, yes.

*To my shivering, snow-bound, ice-encrusted friends on the Right Coast: don't be hatin' on me, mmm-kay?

  1. I can't justify stumbling out of bed in the middle of the night to watch television ...unless I've awakened and can't get back to sleep.
Come to think of it, I realized that the only Olympic activities I've seen have been by accident.

Winter has finally made an appearance here.
We had another quarter inch of rain yesterday.

    1. Oh yeah ...I bought and delivered flowers already.
And sent a bouquet to my daughter, too.
There's nothing wrong with giving fronts... is there?

Therein lies the difference between fans and not-fans. Just a hypothetical... but suppose the World Series was really a WORLD Series and yer Giants were playing against a Japanese team like the Yomuri Giants, and games three, four and five were being played in Japan with a broadcast time of 0300 hrs here in the US. Would you watch? I think you might, but my mileage may vary.

Fronts? Is this auto-correct run amok?

    3. If everyone here was fully ambulatory and able to fend for themselves it would be a different story.
It's almost like having a job around here (IYKWIM)

Fronts is when something is presented before its time ...like celebrating Christmas on the 23rd.
      Hence flowers before Valentines Day.

    4. Ah. Got it, in re: fronts. I'd never heard that before; thanks for the explanation. And yes, I DO know what you mean.

  2. You are a true blue fan, Buck. Or should that be true red? We may hit 70 in Little Rock on Monday!

    1. Definitely true RED. I cheered when Slovakia scored their only goal, mainly coz it was a Red Wing that scored. That's true red.

  3. Interesting that Bylsma started Quick in goal instead of Miller. Miller has Olympic experience and has been playing really well for an awful Buffalo team. They're both capable of stealing games though.

    1. I hear ya... I thought Miller would get the start. I wonder... as a Wings fan... if Howard will see any ice time in these Olympics. Prolly not...

  4. Funny, as the son of a multi-sport coach and as a multi-sport athelete myself, I used to watch EVERYTHING that came down the pike--college, pro, Olympics, you name it. But maybe there is a lifetime saturation point. All I know is these days I seldom watch ANYTHING unless it involves one of "my teams." Oh, I'll occasionally watch a good NFL game between teams I don't follow, but I don't go out of the way to seek them out. Will watch NBA finals, and occasionally the nights hi-lights on Sports Center just for the skill and artistry displayed, but certainly not for "thrill"/"suspense" of the game. And as an ex scholarship tennis-player I rarely watch any of it any more. After one's seen a thousand great back-hand passing shots how many more do I need? Am I clinically depressed, or just jaded? (PS: I've watched almost ZERO of this Olympics so far, lol.) How ironic that in the days of cable, internet and sat global tv, sports have never been more avail--coverage I would have killed for years ago--yet I increasingly have lost interest..

    1. I watch a lot o' hockey... a LOT. I have the Center Ice package, mainly so I can watch all the Wings game, but I watch EVERY night, even when the Wings aren't playing. As for the other sports... meh. I never watch the NFL or NBA and only watch a handful of baseball games in a year's time... usually just the World Series, but I'll watch the division and league championship games if the Tigers are playing. The only other sport I enjoy as much as hockey is college football and EVERY Saturday in the Fall is an all-day football orgy. That said, I'm watching a lot of the Olympics this year.

Just be polite... that's all I ask.
