Today's Happy Hour Soundtrack, Part Deux

Well.  Not five minutes passed between the time I put up the post below and FedEx pulled up to our door, as fate would have it, and we are in possession of new and brighter birds.  Say what?  We'll get to that but first... the tune we had in mind:

Flamingos.  New ones.  Coz the old ones didn't fare well in a land without shrimp.  Notice:

Earlier today.

It's shrimp that give flamingos their pink color and we're decidedly short on shrimp in these parts, so we freed our older birds to fly away to happier climes and replaced them with these:

Just a few minutes ago.

I was taken in, yet again, in that Amazon PROMISED me these birds would be at least 32 inches high.  Well... close, but no cigar.  At least they're pink.  But, Hey!  How about the Duke?

  1. Lets see, Ellington's album Concert On The Virgin Islands would also probably be appropriate, NO?

(btw, his album Duke Ellington: At His Very Best (1959) really is, I think, his all-time best. One old song on it sung by Billy Holiday, "Do nothing 'Til You Hear From Me" is my fave of the album. Other songs on it are: Jack The Bear, Concerto for Cootie, Harlem Air Shaft, Across the Tracks Blues, Chloe, Royal Garden Blues,Warm Valley, Ko-Ko, Black, Brown & Beige, Creole Love Call and Transblucency.

    1. It's hard to name a "best" Ellington album, IM(NS)HO. But "At His Very Best" is certainly a candidate.

  3. The new birds are an improvement. Of course, pink is my favorite color.

    1. Yeah, they are an improvement. Slightly larger, too.

  4. It was my Mother's too. My child-hood home was initially a "forward-fashion" (for the 50s white-paint middle-west) pinkish-orange painted red-wood, w. cream trim & part limestone facings Frank-Loyd Wright Ranch-Style affair w.a black/dark brown roof (w. blue & green "dots" in shingles) But w. each succeeding re-painting the house got pinker and pinker until totally pink. Finally, when the house was re-roofed Mom had white shingles installed--someone remarked the damn thing looked like a wedding cake, lol. Plus her bed-room was pink and the master bath was a pink& gray number as well..

    1. I wouldn't mind living in a wedding cake house. TSMP and I had in our heads to get kinda wild with the exterior of the Ferndale house... until the neighbors staged an intervention. We were gonna paint the second story electric blue and had swatches painted on the outside. Our neighbors were much less than enthused about THAT ideer. So we went with a gray and kept peace. But we did get kinda wild inside...

    2. Yeah, it all depends on the neighborhood/part of the country. Our 1951 original paint scheme would have been right at home in Key West, Miami, Venice Beach, Santa Barbara, etc., even in the early 50s, but East-Central rural Illinois was a hoss of a different "color." Gray, pale blue, green and tan or brown was about as "creative" a color palette as the town could stand. Our place was quite the conversation piece for the first few years, lol.

  5. Shrimp? Really? Well, for a boy from the SE, who has looked at plenty of 'mingos, I never knew that swimps give 'em they color!

    Learn something new ever day.

I can eat my weight in 'em. Even though I'm on the brown side, maybe that's why I'm partial to mauve. ;)

    1. I learned the shrimp thing from NatGeo... somewhere... but The Wiki sez so, too.

The pink or reddish color of flamingos comes from carotenoid proteins in their diet of animal and plant plankton.

  6. So, I thought I'd quiz "the Animal Lady" around our house last evening. I asked her if she knew why 'mingos have varying colors of pink, or why they are pink at all.

She looked at me like I had three eyes, and said, "It's their diet, moron! It's how many shrimp they eat. Moron."

    Sad creature, I'm iz...

Just be polite... that's all I ask.
