Today's Happy Hour Soundtrack

Another two-fer... with Patti Smith's original version first:



And now Natalie Merchant's take:



I prefer Natalie's version from a strictly musical standpoint.  That said, I HAVE to fall down on Patti Smith's version as my favorite, if only for the memories that are in it.  1978 was a VERY good year, Gentle Reader... in many more ways than one.  We could go on in that space but we won't.  You're welcome, as always.

In other news... Today isn't quite as nice as yesterday... 49 degrees, with a wind chill of 46, as we speak... but it was good enough that we did yet another winter outdoor Happy Hour.  Props to Sheik al-Gore and his global warming.  Ya done good, Al.

And, apropos o' nuthin'... it sure smells GOOD in the house, seein' as how we've had those Navy beans and ham hocks simmerin' since 1300 hrs.  I should have been more clear yesterday when I said we were gonna get those beans goin'.  What the sergeant REALLY meant is that we were gonna let those beans soak overnight; the actual cookin' began today with the eatin' to happen sometime around 1800 hrs.  We're salivating, as we speak.

  3. I'd never heard the 10,000 Maniacs version of this and have only a fleeting recognition of the name, an outstanding version of a very good song often butchered by club bands. Thanx Buck, loads of good memories from '78. Many of them clear!

  4. Not having those memories you speak of, I think I like Natalie's version best. As for Navy beans, oh my. I do love them. Especially prepared as you describe. All you need now is a little iron skillet of cornbread to complete what's become my favorite meal. Thanks to your description, I'm speaking to Joyce about having some tomorrow night.

    1. The beans were good, Dan, and I have at least another three or mebbe four meals left in that pot. I also have an iron skillet but baking cornbread ain't one of my skills... MORE'S the pity. Your beans will be done right!
