Today's Happy Hour Soundtrack

We returned to our Sensitive Seventies Kinda Guy roots today, what with changin' our station to Joni Mitchell radio... and we were originally thinkin' about posting Lennon's "Watching the Wheels" until we sat down to put this post up and this tune came on...

Halt.  Whoa.  Full-stop.  Van The Man will override anyone, any time, and the fact that this tune... as heard on Pandora... even exists on the Tube O' You was reason enough to change horses in mid-stream.

So, OK.  This Morrison tune isn't exactly a seventies sorta thang, given it came out in the mid-'80s.  But Van is one of my perennial favorites and the invoker of many, many precious memories.  So there's that.

But that doesn't mean we can't do a two-fer, does it?  So....

People say I'm lazy dreaming my life away
Well they give me all kinds of advice designed to enlighten me
When I tell them that I'm doing fine watching shadows on the wall
Don't you miss the big time boy you're no longer on the ball

I'm just sitting here watching the wheels go round and round

I really love to watch them roll
No longer riding on the merry-go-round
I just had to let it go
And that was what we were really on about today... watching the wheels go round and round.  "Letting go" ain't a piece part o' all this... on the contrary, holding ON to what once was, and shall ever be... is one of our principal objectives.  The watching of wheels is an integral part o' that.

―:☺:―

Another integral part o' wheel-watching... Porters.  We've never posted a post-Happy Hour pic before, opting as we do for the optics of a full glass and such.  But we're changing up today:

I've really been into the Porters of late and pictured above are two of my favorites, both empty, both consumed, both contributing to my overall sense of well-being and satisfaction with our world as it it is today.  Well, that and the 70-degree temps outdoors.  It's another one of those door-and-windows-wide-open sorta days which we're spending, in large part, out on the verandah.

I do believe I'll have another... Beer Me!

  1. Deschutes Brewery: proof that Oregon isn't completely useless.

  2. And State Pen... a product o' Santa Fe brewery... likewise proves NM ain't entirely useless. ;-)

  3. Had 3 of those Black Buttes, draft style, in a nice little place downtown yesterday. Big part of my enjoyment of the city yesterday. What a good damned beer.

And in agreement with inno, I'd take a Mirror Pond just about any old time, too.

  4. There's Mirror Pond in my fridge as we speak, as well, but I MUCH prefer the Black Butte. As you say... that's damned GOOD beer.

  5. I liked the Lennon song better. It sure would be nice to listen to the song while writing in the comment, but when you switch pages, you lose the music. Ahh me.

  6. Van's the Man. And some great art visuals on that vid. Is that a carrot cake I see over there by the empty glass?

And I confess, I like that song "Watchin' the Wheels." The premise and the "watching shadows on the wall" line reminded me of the old '60s Statler Bros. hit, "Countin' Flowers on the Wall" in which the narrator also says he's been "smokin' cigarettes and watchin' Captain Kangaroo." Boy, goin' back that far makes me think I've been smokin' somethin. But I ain't smoked anything. I swear.

  7. Put me down for Lennon. As for Oregon beer, I miss the old Henry Weinhard beers. Man, they had some decent regular stuff, especially the Ale and the so called "Private Reserve".

As they say here in the South, "I'm fixin' ta carry momma down to the store to get another keg." The old keg is gone and we need another one!

  8. Speaking of "Wheels" Buck, and connected to your previous post about your next-door Padre, you could be a "Big Wheel" in the Universal Life Church. IIRC it only costs (or used to) $50.00 to get a certificate declaring you an "Ordained Minister" in the ULC. LOL. Then all you would need to do is run for the local Justice of the Peace--it'd get you out of the house to pronounce at weddings, get you some free booze& food and/or at the very least $50 bucks/ session (the present going rate might be higher! ( I've got a buddy of mine in Louisville who used to own a couple of Hallmark Card shops, sold 'em after a divorce and now does this on the side for beer money."On the side?", hell, it's about the only thing he does these days, LOL)

  9. Lou: So you REALLY want me to go back to the old new-window comment box, is that what you're sayin'? ;-)

Dan: In re: "Flowers On the Wall"... My father bought a copy o' that tune along with some flowers and such when he and my stepmother were dating, right after they had their first minor blow-up. The family legend is that gesture was what led to the marriage. So... I remember that tune VERY well.

Darryl: I drank a bit o' Weinhards when I lived in Orygun... mostly at other people's houses. I was into cheap beer back then, if I was in to beer at all. I was mostly a whiskey kinda guy at that time... beer came after I went to England. What flavor o' keg will it be this time?

Virgil: That's not a BAD ideer, in and of itself, but I'd feel jes a LIL bit hypocritical, given my views on religion. But then again, isn't the ULC one o' those "anythang goes" sorta institutions?

  10. Jealous. About the open the windows, be on the verandah business. We just finished a 2-day long snowstorm. Didn't leave too much snow - lots of "mix" in there - but it has kept temps down and the sky very grey. This being New England however, by tomorrow temps should be in the upper 40s. And yes, I will throw open the windows if the sun is out.

It hasn't been a bad winter here, but it has been a long one.

  11. Kris: Don't be TOO jealous. Weather like yesterday is a serious hit'n'miss kinda thang. Today we're in the high 40s with the usual, customary, and UN-reasonable wind. No open windows or outdoor Happy Hour TODAY.

  12. There was no Sierra Nevada available in half barrel at Total Wine & Spirits. Bummer.

Just be polite... that's all I ask.
