Tonight's ADWH Soundtrack

J.J. Cale:

I never drink in the afternoon
I never drink alone
Sure do like a drink or two
When I get home
Every evening, what I do
Is sit here in this chair
Pour myself some whiskey
Watch my troubles vanish into the air
Rollin'
rollin'
Ain't gonna worry no more
Rollin'
rollin'
Ain't gonna worry no more

Used to worry about gambling
Throwin' my money away
Used to worry about wastin' time
Layin' around the house all day
But I'm all right now
Yes I'm all right now
Never thought I'd make it
But I always do somehow
Heh.  Me and J.J. ... except for the fact that I DO drink in the afternoon and I DO drink alone.  Conventional wisdom has it you have a problem if you drink alone.  Well... fuck conventional wisdom.  That same conventional wisdom sez you're crazy if you talk to yourself but I do that too, because sometimes that's the only intelligent conversation I can get.  Same thing with drinkin' alone, only more so.

So there was that.  There was also this:

Oooh.  Alison Krauss and Union Station... just a pickin' and a grinnin'... and doin' a damned fine job of it, too.

We were ALL over the musical map tonight, Gentle Reader.

  1. Alison Krauss...

    Shazaaaaaam!

Thanks for the link to her wiki bio. My heart sunk when I read she was raised in friggin' Illinois.

But, redemption was on the way. Her folks are from Columbus, MS. Ever been to Columbus? True southern...one of my favorite stops when I was working on the road. Damn shame they had to raise her up yonder. But, she obviously gots it in her genes.

  2. I have it on good authority That it's not about when or who you drink with that identifies the problem. Your response pretty much parallels my own.

    v-word = quitte

  3. Allison Krauss - she is magnificent. Have you heard her duets with Robert Plant?

    Sublime.

  4. Ever been to Columbus?

Nope, and more's the pity. My travels in the Deep South have pretty much been limited to the Gulf Coast, points immediately north, and small towns off of I-20 and I-10.

Skip: Yeah, "problem" has everything to do with quantity, methinks.

Kris: I bought the Krauss/Plant album. I wrote about it (sorta), too. Agreed: very nice.

Another unlikely duo in the same vein is Emmylou Harris and Mark Knopfler... they do excellent work together.

  5. LOL, Buck. When one drinks alone it makes the inevitable passing out SO much more socially acceptable. :)

  6. @ Skip - yeah, there's still more to it than that. There's at least one whole book on the subject.

  7. Virgil: I rarely pass out... although I WILL admit to takin' the occasional nap after Happy Hour. But only coz I CAN.

Ivan: And at least 12 steps, too. ;-)

  8. I love the little courthouse square in Columbus -- so picturesque and quaint.

Real men (and women) can handle drinking alone!

And talking to themselves (or their dogs).

Just be polite... that's all I ask.
