Shocka!

Slovakia beats Russia in a seven-round shoot-out!  In back-to-back games... after losing a hard fought match to the Czech Republic last evening... Slovakia comes back to tie tonight's game in the third period at 1 - 1 and then Jozef Stumpel and Pavol Demitra (in the pic at left) score in the shootout for the win.

A most impressive performance by the Slovaks, especially goalie Jaroslav Halak and their defensive unit.  But that's not to take anything away from their offense, who put 33 shots on goal to the Russians' 37.  That last number says a lot, given the high-powered nature of the Russian offense.

Color me both surprised AND impressed.  Slovakia just might be the Dark Horse of these Olympic games.

  1. Did you wacth it on the web, Buck? The women's hockey was on USA and other stuff on NBC.

  2. This was on MSNBC - all of the hockey games have been televised there or USA.

Helluva game. Once I caught wind of the Slovakian lineup I had to wonder - why is nobody giving these guys a chance? Gaborik, Demitra, Hossa, Chara, Handzus, Halak. C'mon. That's some serious friggin' talent there. Maybe not quite as deep as others, but no slouches, to be sure.

  4. Small Tee: Andy's sorta right... the game began on MSNBC, with three minutes already played in the first period and then switched to CNBC sometime later. Or rather the pricks SAID it was on CNBC... I change channels, get the tail end of something else (curling, I think) with a talking head giving a recap and a "we'll be back tomorrow" speech, followed by four frickin' minutes of ADS, after which time the game came on. In the meantime the Russians had TWO powerplays but didn't score, and I missed all of that. NBC is so frickin' lame with the hockey.

Andy: Your point about no one giving the Slovaks a chance is a good one. I didn't realize who was on their roster either until they played the Czechs, who also have a strong squad. Hossa has a brother who is quite good, too. And the fact Gaborik is even playing blows me away.

  7. The two other hockey fans I work with were rather surprised by the outcome. As was I. But the Slovaks are not slouches. It was a goal tending duel, to be sure.
And the hot chicks were all at the curling rink in Bow Island, Alberta. A long, long time ago. Why else would we have hung out there, Eh?
