Newt at CPAC

Rush got all the headlines and soundbites but Speaker Gingrich delivered the substance... in my book... and in about half the time, as well. Here's Newt, in his entirety (courtesy of C-SPAN's YouTube channel, 46 minutes):

And yeah... I DID watch Mr. Limbaugh, too. He was OK, in his inimitable Red Meat, stem-winding manner. It's hard to disagree with the points Mr. Limbaugh makes... or even the way he makes those points, coz the man IS funny and he's also accurate most of the time. It's just that I'm not nearly as taken with the man as a lot of my Fellow Travelers on the right side of the 'sphere. The term "Ditto Head" isn't in vogue these days, but I still remember it from the late '80s and early '90s... and that's an association I don't care to have, thank you very much. But Newt? Yep. Associate away.

And for the record: I did NOT watch Coulter. Period. Full stop. End of report.

  1. I haven't watched either yet, but I will. Both Gingrich and Limbaugh have their flaws; but Gingrich was a much better Speaker and party leader than any who followed him. He does have vision.

I like Ann Coulter. She has a schtick, just like Rush. And she's charming up close. She created the lightning rod persona after getting savaged over some earlier, milder writing; I think she decided that if she was going to get attacked the way she does, she might as well be well-paid for it.

She does say things with which a lot of us agree, but wouldn't say for fear of looking mean or something.

  2. I'am with you on Rush vs Gingrich especially since Gingrich has actually worked the ropes while Rush has only ever talked about it.

I like Ann because I think she does the agitation on subjects that truly separate the two parties. Things that if Gingrich brought up would cause more problems for him. I do find it interesting that she has agreed to debate Bill Marh (cant for the live of me spell that commie's name). I am sure it will be entertaining but the bitter left to which I think Bill is a captain of, should be left alone to wallow in their own bile.

    BT: Jimmy T sends.

  3. I've found I'm pretty much alone amongst my brethren and sisteren on the right in my dislike of Coulter. I just find her waaay too strident for my tastes. Sorta like our very own Janeane Garofalo, IMHO. Just as off-putting, just as strident, and just as funny... i.e., NOT.

  4. Different Strokes....

Limbaugh was good, Coulter Great, Newt? Where was he in 1996 when caving to Clinton...and shutting out the voice of the true Conservatives in Congress?

On the negative side of those I watched...Joe Scarborough might as well get his Monica style knee pads out and service King Barry...because he is not conservative. He fits right in at MSNBC.

  5. I have a tough time with Coulter too. While I generally agree with with what she has too say, I find her delivery to be a bit abrasive and counterproductive.

  6. Buck:

I completely agree with you that Mr. Newt was SO MUCH better than Rush, though Rush got all the headlines.

I watched many of the speeches:
My favorites were Rep. Mike Pence, Wayne LaPierre .... and yes Ann Coulter. I would give Ann the prize for the best speech. She is just so drop dead ON TARGET and FEARLESS and she says anything she darn well wants to ... I LOVE THAT. The stuff in her speech was what many others probably would have loved to say ... and her timing .... well, I laughed out loud all the way through it.

I felt energized after watching some of the speeches .... and feel like (for the first time) that we can recover and grow the movement again.

Yep, Newt was the best (after Ann LOL) and Rush was just so so. I was kind of mystified by the huge positive response to his speech -- I guess conservatives are just desperate to cling to anything that could help us.

  7. Sahron: Ya know... I tried to watch Coulter... I really did. But there's just something about her that puts me off -- waaaay off. I'm not a fan of cheap shots or demonization, on either side. I'm more a fan of the William F. Buckley, Jr. school of political discourse. Buckley could eviscerate a political opponent and make the recipient of his rapier-wit take-downs smile while he did it. Coulter's preferred weapon, on the other hand, is the bludgeon. Not much skill OR wit there, IMHO. But... Vive La Difference, as it's said.

Just be polite... that's all I ask.
