Yet another two-fer... beginning with The Meters, with a funky take on Rod Argent's little-known classic...
That's a pretty good, if radically different, take on the original. Here's the original version:

I much prefer Argent's version of the two... but they're both great. And the lyrics? Let's just say they resonate. You've taken my life so take my soulThat's what you said but who are we to knowI want to be with you as long as you want me toSo don't move awayAin't that what you said?Ain't that what you said?Ain't that what you said?Liar liar liar
Rod Argent is one of the unfairly forgotten fine musicians of rock. As an improviser and lead player on his particular instrument, I'd rank him up there with any of the more readily recognized names. Thanks for reminding me of that.
ReplyDeleteYer welcome!
DeleteI'd hate to call them "one-hit-wonders" because that would imply they didn't have a body of work--yet as far as the general public goes they were just that. They were just too idiosyncratic--esoteric--call it what you will--for the general public. (And probably needed a better PR man and solid backing from a major label, lol)
ReplyDeleteArgent? Or The Meters?
DeleteArgent, man. I can't recall anything the Meters have done that was a national "big hit" on the charts. Yet they've produced enough midling stuff along the way to more or less stay in the public eye in a way that Argent did not. YMMV...
ReplyDeleteI thought so... just wanted to make sure, coz you know what a pedant we are.
