Yesterday...

... was a real treat for a guy like me, which is to say a geezer who's basically anti-social and reclusive.  By that I mean I got to spend the entire day in the company of others... most, but not all, of whom were immediate fam'bly.  The day began when DIL Erma rang me up around 0930 hrs yesterday morning, askin' sweetly "Are you up?", to which I replied "I am now..."  So we made the coffee, DIL Erm arrived shortly thereafter, and we set out to gallivant around the countryside for a couple o' hours. The gallivanting was followed by a couple o' few hours fixin' the world and consuming barley pops on the verandah, followed by dinner at Erma's sister's house, followed by a GREAT football game and more barley pops.

On that last:  the BEST part of that game might have been watching it in the company of a buncha Boomer-Sooner fans who got decidedly boomed and doomed, and NOT in a good way.  For them.  But it was for ME... the sole ND fan in the audience of a lil less than a dozen folks... and we didn't bother to ask them the ol' proverbial "Was it good for you?" coz we knew the answer to THAT.

Sing along, coz you KNOW the tune:

Yeah, Baby!

So, we're back to normal today... which is to say talkin' about the WX and publishing right-wing propaganda.  Like this:

It's almost frickin' criminal the way the media is in the tank for Obama.  And our WX?  It's fine; we've gone nearly a month without turnin' on the AC OR the furnace.  It was a near-run thang last night where the furnace is concerned, though... and I admit we got our lil portable electric heater out whilst doin' some late-night inter-tube surfin'.  Coz Baby, it was COLD outside.

  1. Sounds like it was a wonderful day Buck; it is important to be in the company of others every so often. :-) As to the WX...well the wind is picking up here and we are seeing some soft sprinkles of rain. By this time tomorrow we should be hearing the wind howl and bracing for 5 inches of rain. We are battened down, generator has been filled and tested out and we are as ready as we are gonna be. Storm of a lifetime, they are saying. Cuz we are just that lucky.

Sartre is often quoted with his "Hell is other people" and I believe he was right, to a certain extent. The flip side of that coin is "you can choose your friends but you can't choose your family." Without goin' into too much detail I'll only say that I've been blessed to that extent, in the family space. They are all Good People, even if and when I take them in small doses.

  2. I've experienced the ND effect. I was at a houseful of UofM fans on the occasion of an Irish manhandling of the Wolverines. Worse, the sweater I was wearing had some green in it. I did my best to remain neutral, but the more they gnashed their teeth and snarled at me, the harder is was not to cheer on the Irish.

That said, I would like nothing better than to see a BCS final between Oregon and Notre Dame. I'd also like to see K State cream the Tide.

As my old Sea Daddy used to say, "Is that askin' too much?"

    1. Oh yeah, and my all time favorite college game that I ever watched on TV as a kid was when ND ended the Bud Wilkinson led Sooners win streak.

I left a little something in the comments section on my blog for you.

    2. Oh, I am SO conflicted when ND plays Big Blue, given I have certain allegiances. But blood... and former relationships... are thicker than water, so I ALWAYS root for ND when they play Michigan (and Air Force). That said, there are certain gratifying "unintended consequences" when the Irish lose to one or the other of those two teams. ;-)

As for ND and the OU streak... one of the BETTER comments made during last night's game was that ND has something like a 9-1 record against OU, all-time. Heh.

    3. Skip, Bammer would beat K-State with their second string. Just sayin'...

  3. I believe the Irish are definitely back! I can still remember those college game highlights I used to watch during the '50s when the Irish, at least to me, seemed like the undisputed kings of the game.

    1. We ND fans have been a long time in the wilderness, Dan. This season is gratifying beyond belief... and yeah, the Irish are BACK. I'm hopin' they stay that way.

  4. Well...from a guy that's eating Humble Pie (you know...the one that once said Notre Dame would NEVER be a national power again), it was really okay with me. Kinda' glad to see it in an odd way.

Of course, ND has not played an SEC team yet, so it's hard to judge. But, what I saw of the game last night before I fell asleep (had to be up at 0400), and what I've seen of the highlights today tells me that of the TOP 6 teams in the AP, y'all could beat Oregon convincingly, maybe hold your own with my beloved Tigers, and would destroy teh Ohio State. (Would lose to 'Bama, and K-State. Just sayin'...)

Extremely fast progress, IMHO. I am actually impressed.

Winning begets winning. Top level recruits begin to give you a serious look when they KNOW that they'll be seen on nashunul tv regularly.

If y'all get past USC (nyuk....got beat by THE Arizona College of Cosmetology and Nail Doin'...nyuk), and don't stumble against the Demon Deacons, all bets are off as to whether The Dame will end up in the BSCS champeenship. Seriously, the Wake Forest game is the one that could screw the pooch.

Regardless, I KNOW how good it feels to win consistently after many years of wanderin' in the wilderness. Words really can't describe it.

    1. I'll agree with most o' what you say, but I also believe ND would give either K-State or Oregon one hella run for their money. ND's success this season has been built on their defense... to say the VERY least... and that sorta defense would/could smother both of the teams in question. I'm not takin' anythang away from either team, as I've watched a couple of their games. That said, neither team has played anyone with as good a defense as the one ND is putting on the field right now. Add in the fact that Golson is maturing as a QB and you have the makings of a potential national champion. That kid can ONLY get better and better as time goes on.

But, yeah. Us ND gomers have been wanderin' in the wilderness for a LOOOONG time. It's good to be back.

    2. I meant 'Bama, vice Oregon. My Bad.

  5. I figgered you meant The Bamaroids.

    Will disagree (to a point).

    Respectfully.

'Bama has not been tested against a GREAT defense yet. LSU, when hitting on all 8 would be that test. But, we've been injured...hit and miss...part and piecing together, etc. We'll know after next Saturday whether Corch St. Nick holds all the cards, or not. Depending on who plays, and who is healthy, my beloved Tigers may be the best evidence as to how Bammer will perform against a real D.

That said, I have no doubt that K-State would not run up 80 points against ND. And, I think 'Bama would probably only score about 24 in a full length game. Still...a win would be tough against either of those teams. I mean, y'all only scored 30 against the Okies...

ND would be such a defense, IF they remain healthy. Witness OU's margin of victory in its previous wins, and witness the number of points they FAILED to score against ND... IN NORMAN, fer crissakes. That was defense, Kind Sir. And 30 was enough, wasn't it? ;-)

  6. I hate ND w. a passion, but I've managed to overlook that with you Buck as long as they were down, but now I seriously really don't know how long I'm going to be able to sustain the relationship if you become an insufferable bastard like most ND fans, lol. What iz I gonna DOooo??? ONE of us is gonna have to seek therapy--please advise.. :)

    1. Ahem. I shall trot out a hoary ol' cliché here... to wit: "Physician, heal thyself." There's NOTHING more insufferable in the sports world than an SEC homer, of whatever stripe... be it 'Bama, LSWho, the Clan in both flavors, ANYONE from Florida, yadda, yadda. You have one whole helluva lot o' nerve to call ND fans "insufferable," especially since we have a NATIONAL fan base, whereas the fans of your Tiggers are ALL graduates of a small state school in an alligator-infested former swampland and various flavors o' Coon-asses. So there's that.

The other thing is the hatred of Notre Dame was primarily because they were SO successful for SO long. You're of an age (ahem) that you remember those days very well, so I'll give you some small degree of a pass. It's a generational thang.

But Hey... we're back. Get used to it.

  8. You know I'm not a big OU fan, but I was not impressed with ND's win. Seemed a bit of a steal.

    1. A steal? Not according to the stats. OU only got 15 yards on the ground... that speaks to me of great defense, not a steal.

  10. "...Sing along, coz you KNOW the tune:"

    (Ahem...)

Beer, beer for old Notre Dame,

Shake up a cocktail, cheer in your name.

Send a freshman out for gin, and

Don't let a sober sophomore in.

We never stagger, we never fall,

We sober up on wood alcohol.

While our drunken sons are stagg'ring

Down to the bar for more.
