I spent some time down in Florida's panhandle a few years ago; when conditions were right you could hear the AC-130s from Hurlburt Field on the range at Eglin, and by "hear" I mean the sound of that big 105mm howitzer letting go. I often think about that when I see the Spectres/Stingers (there's a difference) making lazy orbits over P-Ville before they head out to Melrose or down range to White Sands. That said, we're too far away from Melrose to hear the guys practicing. More's the pity.
And then there's this...
That's EXACTLY what troubles me about women in the combat arms.
The service guy from the appliance store stopped in yesterday and left me with a suitable substitute handle for my fridge while he orders the correct part. He informed me that I'm not the only one with this problem... his bid'niz has been VERY busy replacing handles on these appliances. He also told me that Frigidaire issued a memo to all dealers stating that handle replacement would NOT be covered under warranty any longer. So if you're in the market for new appliances... I'd consider another brand, were I you.

ReplyDeleteAs a matter of historical record, the original "Stingers" were Korea-era C-119Ks, (had two jet engines besides props) and they were proceeded by C-119G s (call-sign "Shadow") without the jet engine add-ons. At one point we were utilizing all four in I Corps in '68--C-47 Spookys, C-119 Shadows& Stingers and C-130 Spectres, although the only ones actually based in I-Corps were some C-47 Spookys at DaNang--at least when I was there, afaik.
SpecOps has a representative sample of each at the Hurlburt Field air park in Fort Walton Beach.
DeleteLOVE the plane pr0n. We get low-level flyovers every so often from Westover AFB - today it was a single copter skimming the trees. Always makes our heads swivel to see it.
ReplyDeleteI do the same thing when I hear aircraft overhead, Kris. You are NOT alone.
DeleteNot looking forward to the diplomatic crisis that will confront us when some gals get captured by the Taliban.
ReplyDeleteI'm very sure it will be all George Bush's fault when it happens.
Diplomatic crisis? A PR crisis, yes. Not so sure about how the diplomats will be involved.
DeleteYou're too well-grounded in reality. It would actually be a first-rate clusterfuck. But with a democrat regime, there are no clusterfucks, only diplomatic crises...nothing ever fails, we're just in the process of talking our way out of something. Even Operation Eagle Claw was a diplomatic crisis.
DeleteA PR crisis/debacle would be the picture of Our First Holy Emperor "skeet shooting" released this morning. But that only happens when the powers-that-be figure out this was one step forward & two steps back. Not sure if that'll ever happen.
