Best and Worst States for Retirement

I was cruising around the inter-tubes after the hockey games last evening and was lookin' at Forbes' take on the best and worst states to retire in.  I was kinda surprised at this...

We're tied with Florida for #7, believe it or don't.  Hawaii was named "best state" to retire in, despite having the highest cost of living in the USofA.

This didn't surprise me at all...

Yup.  You can add the fact that Michigan is also home to the #1 (Detroit) and #2 (Flint) "Most Miserable Cities in America."  My former home has fallen on hard times, indeed.

  1. And (no surprise) Rhode Island is the 10th worst state to retire.

"According to MoneyRates, the U.S. population overall is both growing and aging yet Rhode Island was the only state to see its senior population shrink between the 2000 and 2010 census surveys. Having a cost of living and average property tax that are among the highest in the nation might be one reason."

    Yeah, no kidding!

    1. I liked what little time I spent in Newport... very picturesque and friendly. But that don't pay the rent now, does it?

  2. Interesting - we are starting to look around at this kind of thing and Arizona is where we often turn our thoughts. It's been mentioned to me many times that with my asthma and allergies, it would be the safest place for me to live. It's #4 on the "best" list, which is good to know. And seeing many New England states on the worst list doesn't surprise me. It's beautiful here and while I do love it so very much, it is ridiculously expensive in every single way possible. The Oracle and I agree that we will make no relocation decision as long as his parents are alive but once that fateful day comes - we may just uproot and start over in a place like Arizona.

    1. Arizona IS pretty nice, Kris. You would have some kinda culture shock, though. Big time!

    2. Buck, you are probably right however living in a state that is gun-friendly ... that would be a welcomed shock. :-)

  3. Well, Los Alamos doesn't surprise me. All that glow from the nuke-labs detritus scattered around the area keeps ya warm on cold winter nights. ;)

    2. Los Alamos is a wonderful place. They have some of the smarter folk in NM - great doctors and hospitals. It is kind of a normal place hidden away from the funky weirdos in Taos and Santa Fe.

    3. @Lou: OK. Now give me a house and I'll move up there. ;-)

Just be polite... that's all I ask.
