Saturday

A lil bit o' overkill on the euphemisms but funny, none the less.  My mustache is more or less permanent... there HAVE been the odd times when I've shaved it off but I always put it back after a week or two, at the most.  Here's one of the very few known pics o' me without lip foliage:

Taken in Moscow, in 1993.  There are a few more pics at the link.

  1. I've worn a full beard for all but a few months since I was 20 or so. I don't think my wife has ever seen my chin. Some years back, she was flipping thru my HS yearbook one day, and of course, she found my senior picture. Her eyes got wide, and she turned to me and said, "Don't you EVER shave!"

    Well, OK, I wasn't planning to. . . But, I mean, you know, that's still ME, Sweetheart. . .

And of course, now I'm wanting to hear about how you found yerself in Moscow (I'm assuming it's not Moscow, Idaho. . .)

    1. I've worn a beard off and on since sometime in the mid-'90s when EDS relaxed its personal appearance code. I went bare-faced the past three years (except for the 'stache) but recently put the beard back on.

Your wife's comment is pretty funny, Craig.

How'd I get to Moscow? Click that link and all is revealed.

  3. With the Russian building in the background and those Tolstoy V8 and Dostoevsky 6 autos whizzing by plus the briefcase and trenchcoat, I'd say you look like a British spy (009 or 0011) pleased to be on his way to his work as an undercover agent for her majesty's secret service (isn't that MI5?). Handsome mug, cool pic.

    1. Heh. I only WISH I could've ridden in a Tolstoy or a Dostoevsky... all I got was a Yakoff Smirnoff 4. And some ol' broken-down van of indeterminate origin...

As for the spy thang: I KNOW there's file footage... both stills and video... of YrHmblScrb in the basement of the KGB or their successor agency. Those paranoid Rooshians recorded everyone, with no exceptions.

  4. Holy crap that was hysterical. (I tend to like euphemisms, perhaps more than is normal or even healthy. So I really liked that video bit.)

The pic of you without the mustache? That's somehow kinda scary dude. Don't ever shave your mustache. Please. It ain't right somehow.

    1. I do believe 1993 was the last time I shaved the 'stache, so I agree with ya. ;-)

  5. Great pictures! At that moment in time I was in the Adriatic, off of Split and Dubrovnic. Loads of interesting stuff for us to do, too.
    Your travelogue kicks ass!

    1. I can imagine your brand of "interesting" at that point in time, Darryl. Mine was a helluva lot more sedate.

  6. Dunno how I missed that original post as we were "corresponding" by then, but can't make up my mind whether that trench-coat& briefcase pic makes you look look positively Ipcress File Harry Palmer/Michael Cainish or reminds me more of "Quiller" (George Segal, The Quiller Memorandum)..or as the Gary Oldman "Smiley" in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. LOL...I think I'm going with George Segal's "Quiller."

    1. I'm so frickin' ignorant about movies that I had to google ALL of your references, Virgil. But I'm flattered at the Segal comparison. Thank ya!

  7. I barely recognize you in that picture - it's the fuller face, I think. And maybe the trench coat.

    1. In re: fuller face. I WAS pretty fat then, in more ways than one.

    2. Relatively speaking, of course.

  8. I've almost always had something on my face, whether full beard, goatee, or mustache. At the very least, long sideburns.

I remember once, about twelve years ago, when I had been wearing a full beard for six or seven years and I decided to shave it off completely. I finished and saw My Father in the mirror. Very disconcerting. I grew a goatee back immediately (which, in this light-haired fellow's case meant about two weeks.)

    1. Heh. I see my father a lot these days, too. It's inevitable.

Just be polite... that's all I ask.
