Saturday

I was lookin' for love in all the wrong places... specifically in the US edition of The Guardian, which hasn't updated its Viral Vid list since 10/05.  But the UK edition has been updating all along, so today I feel like a perfect putz, albeit a putz with goodies for you, Gentle Reader.  You may find this amusing:

Me?  I've only seen ONE James Bond in a movie and that would be Sean Connery.  Big-ass 'splosions and special effects requiring the suspension of disbelief jes ain't my thang and that's the state of the state of the current Bond franchise.  Give me "From Russia with Love" or give me nuthin' at all.  Well, you could give me one of Ian Fleming's books.  I'd take that.

That said, there's this: when will the madness end?

    1. Yeah!! Tits, car explosions & guns.

I'll be the first to admit there's more to movie making than those three, it's true. But if you go too many weeks or months watching movies that lack those three, you're probably watching crap. A bad movie with the three beats a good movie without.

  2. Yeah, Buck, you've missed A LOT of "guilty pleasures" in your unwillingness to "suspend disbelief." You've just got to accept the premessis and run with it--let it roll over you like an all-enveloping fog. Lay Back. Do. Not. Resist., lol

    ....AND THE WIMMENS!!!! LOL.

  3. Wimmen seem to be common in yer replies, Ivan and Virgil. As for that: I don't go to strip clubs, either... it's kinda like window shoppin' when ya ain't got any money.

    1. Bond movie =/= strip clubs.

      It's just a fact.

  4. ***"...lie back..."--I'm making more of these silly errors lately--Fossilization--obviously need even more Barbancourt as lubricating mechanism..

  5. I'm not a strip club guy either--never was--was beneath me, (superior being that I am, lol.) An exercise in pure frustration, imho. But multiple good mindless hi-tech chase scenes on the big screen is a guilty pleasure worthy of the suspension of disbelief. OTOH, I AM always highly critical of movies about the military--most of which are severely lacking in terms of realism--both mil procedures and, in my case, most things about the flying 'game." But I still watch..lol

    1. OK, mark me down as "too literal," then. It takes a LOT for me to suspend disbelief... I just can't enjoy something that's improbable or flat-out impossible. (And thank you, Mrs. Clinton, for giving us this term that serves SO well.)

  6. Well, at least Hillary added something of value to the fabric of our lives in her pitiful life.

The only Bond movie I remember seeing in full was "The Spy Who Loved Me." Roger Moore was 007 by then. Don't get me wrong...I've seen parts and pieces of other Bond films, but this is the only one I remember seeing in full at a theater. I Goobled it. It was released in 1977 (the year I graduated from High School...probably took The Mrs. to look at it on a Friday date night...we were dating at the time).

    Still are.

    Occasionally.

Funny deal, though. Looking at the trailer, it seems that the producer/director/whoever of the film which was "presented by" is a guy named Albert Broccoli. Really. Albert Broccoli.

    Nyuk...

    1. That trailer was most certainly interesting. That said, I'd given up on Bond by 1977. I also misspoke when I said I'd only seen one Bond film, with Sean Connery. Further reflection (and a lil googling) indicates I prolly saw Dr. No, Goldfinger and Thunderball, the last o' which was prolly when I gave up on Bond... see "suspension o' disbelief," above. But Sean was magnificent in those flicks. Speaking of Connery... there's this from The Wiki's bio:

In July 2005, it was reported that he had decided to retire from film-making, following disillusionment with the "idiots now making films in Hollywood" and the turmoil making the 2003 film.

A man after my own heart.

  7. I saw Dr. No at a theater in Kure, Japan. It had Japanese subtitles. It was so quiet in the audience you could've heard a pin drop.

    1. It ain't so quiet at the samurai movies, especially with drunken GIs in the audience. ;-)

  8. I enjoyed the Bond movies, and I've seen all of them. My favorite actor is Connery as Bond. I don't view the movies as serious, but more tongue in cheek. Its a swipe on stereo types, corny jokes, gadgets that are clever, even if impractical or silly.

The new Bond is just too serious and despite his tight body, he seems like a wimp.

Bond movies, to me, are fun, with hidden and not so hidden jokes laced through them, till they got to this Craig version. The idiots congratulate themselves for making him "real". Right. He never was real, duh.

  9. Love the Bond films; Connery IS the pinnacle of the franchise for sure. That said, Daniel Craig makes a very credible Bond...the re-booted franchise has a new take on everything. It's refreshed the Bond storyline back to the beginning...giving whole new possibilities for 'splosions, wimmin and the hotness of Bond.

  10. Buck, I know you and respect you as a true scholar of "Let's see what we can do to broaden our horizons today"...which I am probably NOT. But, having bought & cherished & repeatedly watched each and every single Bond movie, including the Sony monstrosity Never Say Never Again, I have two words for you: Casino Royale. I understand your objections fully, I see the logic in them, you are not alone in them, and I am fairly confident you will enjoy this. In terms of the pie-in-the-sky "fantasy" factor for little kids, this is at the opposite end of the scale from that silly childhood fable Moonraker, below From Russia With Love. They were really listening to people like you when they made this. In addition, it is without a doubt the most faithful to its corresponding original-book counterpart, than any other Bond film ever made. Go on, sink your 135 minutes into it, you'll be glad you did.

    1. I'll take that under advisement, Morgan. Mainly coz I respect yer opinion, M'Friend.

  11. I agree that Sean Connery was the best Bond, but like Kris, I like Daniel Craig. I also agree with Morgan, Casino Royale was good and worth the watching. Most of the Bond movies were meant to be a bit silly - lots of tits and ass - it was a sign of the times. Casino Royale was a different sort of Bond - new times.
