Twelve Years

That would be how old The Green Hornet is... and today is her birthday.  I dunno how many times I've posted this photo... I'd say ten, conservatively... but here she is on the day I bought her:

And recently (March o' this year):

This is prolly the last time I'll put up a birthday post for the Ol' Girl.  One thang is for SURE... at 12 years she'll hold my personal all-time automotive longevity award... the previous record holder bein' my '83 Baby Beemer, at ten years.  If I hold on to The Tart as long as I've had The Green Hornet I'll be 79 years old on her 12th birthday... I don't think THAT is gonna happen.

(But I kinda hope it does.)

  1. Is the GH still up for sale? I thought you posted that a while ago, and had a good nibble on it.

I'm just too far away, and had gotten a BMW Z3 when you listed your car, otherwise...

I held on to a Ford Windstar for 16 years, over 300 K miles. Of course I did all the work on it myself. As I do with all of my cars. I have a 2009 BMW 328i xDrive which I intend on keeping at least another 10 to 15 years.

    1. TGH is still in my possession, Anon; I've decided not to sell her. I like yer car habits!

    2. Smart move, in my opinion. While the ol' girl may not get much playing time, sometimes you just have to go for a ride with the top down. I had a Fiat Spyder back in the late 70's, black with a red interior. That was the first convertible I had. Loved that car, but it was too light for the tires of those days, and would slide on spit.

I got the Z3 because I don't need the extra seats as much anymore, and I missed long summer drives with the top down. Nothing else can compare other than a motorcycle.

  2. All right Buck! Gonna keep the GH as a boulevard car for cattin' around, eh? GO AHEAD BUCK! LOL. And hold on to the Tart 'till you're 79? Assuming you're still kickin' and assuming you can live with the monthly payments (which you obviously can, tho things can change--I'm talkin' psychology of debt here) you might as well trade in for a new one every other year to save depreciation and constantly enjoy a new ride--only thing that makes $ & cents "sense" otherwise is to have bought a two yr-old second-hand car w less than 50,000 miles on it--and since you didn't do that you might as well enjoy a new car smell every other year..

    1. I'm a "buy and hold" kinda guy, Virgil. I'll keep The Tart until either she or I die, whichever comes first.

    2. Well, "buy & hold" to the bitter end is the third opion that makes economic sense, Buck, but your cash out-go is going to be substantially the same whether you hold or buy new every other year for the first half (assuming a five-yr note) after which , although you'll no longer have the neg cash-flo of the note outlay, you'll be in an older ride and any maj repairs (say, new transmission, etc, will negate a lot of that economy; the other way keeps you in a new ride and what are you saving your money for anyway at this stage? Still, you may be right--they make cars better now and they last FAR longer w.o. need of maj repairs or maint than even a decade ago, so who am I to second-guess? (slinks off to the bar to contemplate own navel..)

  3. TGH certainly hides her age well. May we all be so blessed. I can see you at 79 driving the Tart - why not?

    1. Why not? The general overall state of my health, in short. But I LIKE the way ya think!

  4. Lou is a VERY optimistic woman, huh?

Heck, I can't see me even being able to climb in to a vehicle at 79, much less drive it. Maybe I'll be able to get in one of those big medical transport vans with the lift-gate on the side that they wheel you on to, and lift you in, and haul your worthless ass to the hospital for a Doctor's appointment, or for your 300th X-ray to see if the bones have knit. Yet.

    But...WHY would anyone want to?

Trust me, I ask myself that question every day at work.

    1. Given I know what you do at work... yeah, I see that. That said, I can see me battin' down the road in The Tart at age 79... IF I'm in a position where I can still drive.
