A full moon as seen from West Orange, N.J., rose over the skyline of Lower Manhattan in New York. (Reuters)
There are ten more images... all of them spectacular... at the link. The skies were cloudy here in P-Ville at moonrise but cleared up sufficiently around midnite to create a bizarre scene, and by that I mean moonlight SO bright it cast shadows. It's pretty bright out again tonight.
Back from the Derby, Buck, and a few scheckles to the good! You just knew the Barbancourtmeister would HAVE to bet "I'll Have Another" to win--especially as he won the Santa Anita Derby, so had the double reason to bet a horse from one of my favorite tracks! I also put money on the two Louisiana jocks, Calvin Borel and Kent Desormeaux (who placed 3rd and closing fast on Dullahan) The ONLY other time I EVER had the winner was also when my birthday fell on the weekend, Derby-Day (May 6th) of 1967. I was in plt tng in Del Rio as a 2nd Louie and I managed to get an early hop Fri morn, then dash to San Antonio and fly mil stand-by to Louisville, getting in early enough to hit the old Pine Room on River Road and take in Elsie at the piano. By 6am we were waterskiing in wet-suits on the Ohio and by 9am were drinking Julips at Judge Long's Estate (then the youngest Fed Judge in Louisville@35) where he pronounced that "his man" at the back of the track said that this relatively unk horse "Proud Clarion" was burning up the track during workouts and that if we liked long shots we should bet him. Well I had $600 bucks and my college roommate in plt tng up at Reese AFB in Lubbock had given me $700 of his money and said to bet as I saw fit. I put all $1300 on the horse to win and he went off at 30-1 odds! Needless to say when he won I was one happy camper--a nice piece of change in 1967 dollars for a single Lieut--took ALL the control I could muster (which wasn't much) to keep from going comatose that night so I could leave the next day in time to make it back to Del Rio for Mon morn formation. I was still so hung over that even on 100% oxy I still don't know how I didn't kill myself on the Mon morn hop, lol.
Your birthday in '67 was certainly a landmark sorta event, wasn't it!?! I'm glad ya had fun this year and came out ahead. I don't believe I've ever won any money at the track, mainly coz I don't GO to the track. I may have been once or twice in my youth but I don't remember the events, if so.
I am so insanely jealous of the pictures that no matter how spectacular they are - I am finding it hard to look at them.
ReplyDeleteIt was cloudy all damn night long in CT and I never saw a damn thing; no light, no shadows. No stars. No planets. And definitely no big-ass Moon.
Hmph!
Dang. Sorry about that, Kris. I thought I was gonna miss it, too... but it cleared up (as noted) around midnight.
