Miscellanea

We're just in from a round-robin errand run, which included a trip over to The Big(ger) City™ for our annual eye exam... the first since my cataract surgery last Spring... and running The Green Hornet through the car wash.  Then it was out to Cannon Airplane Patch for to re-supply the likker locker and the beer section of my fridge.  Then on to the BX, the barber shop, and finally the commissary to pick up a few odds and ends, one of which was a delicious-looking flank steak.

In relative order... my eyes are healthy.  No changes in status, no correction required, good pressure, no signs of glaucoma or any other debilitating eye disease.  All in all a good experience, except for the time o' day I had to be there: 1030 hrs.  We don't DO mornings as a general rule but we were on time for this exercise, and fully-caffeinated, at that.

So... we have a fresh bottle of JW Green.  Now that the weather has warmed up I find my whiskey consumption has increased by an order of magnitude... at the very least.  We were out on the verandah until nearly 2200 hrs last evening and enjoyed three rounds of Green along with some excellent company.

I got my quarterly haircut today and I FINALLY found a lady at the base barbershop who cuts my hair exactly like I want it cut.  Her name is Renee and she's only been at the chop-shop for two weeks now but I already love her.  Yes I do.  Here's the result:

I thought... seriously... about reverting back to full-blown hippie mode, seein' as how it's been more than three months since my last haircut.  My hair (before the barbering) was longer than it's been in quite some time, so why not go all the way?  But then I thought... even MORE seriously... about what a hassle long hair can be, especially if one has a convertible and one is given to driving with the top down more often than not.  I can still remember trying to untangle/unknot my hair the first time I went for an extended drive without putting it in to a pony tail or up under a hat.  I did THAT stoopid-human trick exactly once.  Never again.
And then there's the washing, the drying, and all that other krep.  Click on the photo at the right to see what I looked like about ten years ago, give or take a month.

So... no full-blown-hippie look for me.  Just a half-assed hippie look, and that works.  Sorta.  Renee likes it, anyway.

  1. I love Renee, too. Bitchin' job she did!!!

As you know, I had to "#2" my rapidly balding cranium due to an horrendous injury that almost took my life.

I've polled all of the women that I work with, and all the women whose opinions I respect. It came out 29-1 to keep the buzz cut.

Problem is...the "1" is the one I sleep with.

    Guess I'll lose the clippers...

Truth is, I'm glad she wants me to grow it back. She may not REALLY want me to, but I know she knows I think I look better with what's left of my hair.

    She's a keeper.

Dude! You look like you've put on a couple of pounds. Apartment life becomes you.

    1. In re: the injury. I'm glad you're still with us. You shoulda blogged that, not just a throw-off line in a V-log.

Personally... I think all guys look better with hair. But what the hell do **I** know about that?

In re: weight. I may have added a pound or two, but no more than two. I AM eating better, though... having the space to cook and a dishwasher does wonders for the motivation in that (ahem) space.

    2. Buck and Andy, all this talk about guys looking better with hair depresses me. And, since I do have a dog in this hunt (meaning I'm shaved head bald), I would like to point out as forcefully as possible without offense (which is probably impossible), there's nothing anywhere, no not even an old hippie David Crosby look, that looks as funny as a comb-over. Am I right?

And guys with that half peeled look, the ones with the hair on the sides and back but a bald pate, some of them can bring that off okay, most can't. IMHO.

And, even though I know no more than you all about what a woman thinks is good looking in a guy, some guys who have taken the honest (I chose that word carefully) approach, the full shaved head, still look good, IMHO. For example, Terry O'Quinn who played John Locke on Lost. And Michael Chiklis who was on the Shield tv drama and has been in several movies. I think both of these guys' careers improved when they took the honest approach and shaved what was left of their hair off.

Anyway, Buck, glad you eyes checked out okay. And your haircut looks good. It's been a long time now, but I still have memories about what it was like to have a barber who cut your hair the way you liked it.

    3. All valid points, Dan. I laugh even at the thought of comb-overs... they're the height of ridiculousness. I think I would shave my head if I were in the seriously balding crowd, but that's mere speculation on my part since genetics have blessed me with a reasonably full head o' hair at my semi-advanced age. I can deal with the fact almost all of its former color is gone, and can even joke about bein' a "light blonde" now. But I don't like that, given I have more than my share of vanity.

But... on barbers. My quest to find someone/anyone who cuts hair the way YOU want it, rather than the way THEY want it has been well documented in these pages over the last six and a half years. And Now... Nirvana! Hallelujah! (She'll prolly quit next month, that's my luck.)

  2. Trying to stay under the radar for a variety of reasons, Buck.

But, sometimes I can't hep myself! I'm hopeless when left to my own devices.

I'm with you on the ALL guys looking better with hair. My boys go through that shaved head deal from time to time. I always hold my tongue, but personally, I think they look retarded...just about as retarded as me with no hair.

As to the weight...maybe it's the camera angle. But, in the photo you look like you've put on a pound or two, and you really needed to.

Hell! I sound like my Mama!

  4. I tried leaving a comment with my Kindle Fire - typed it out with one finger, but someway I lost it. Basically, I said that I like men with short, but not shaved hair. Very few men can carry off the longhair look. You may be one of the few, but not too long, please.

    1. I've noticed that Blogger has quit sending me e-mails when I get a comment, too. Or rather they're bein' VERY erratic about it. Yeah, "not TOO long" is kinda-sorta where I'm at.

  5. Buck, no offense, but I think it's sad when I see guys your age still clinging to the hippie look they wore thirty years ago...or just ten years ago.

Renee did a great job on your hair. The shorter hair puts the focus on your incredible blue eyes, too. Own your age 'cause you're looking good.

    1. Yeah, old hippies ARE sad... valid point. David Crosby is prolly the poster child for this phenomenon. And thanks for the compliment!

  6. Slightly OT, but tangentially appropriate, I think: Did you know you were related to royalty? The former Lord Mayor of London Sir Issac Pennington? (how could you have been stationed in the London area and missed this? Or maybe you didn't and have written about it earlier and I missed it)

OTOH, perhaps (more likely, even :) ) you are linked more closely to the "Lord Pennington" of The Whiskey Chronicles. LOL!

    1. The only royalty that I **know** I'm related to is the "Royal Fuck-up." And I don't know The Whiskey Chronicles, either. Google is not my friend for that term, all I get is a blog named thusly and links to it.

    2. Didn't you hit the link, Buc? The blog has a GREAT backgrounder on its very own "Lord Pennington" on the front of home page! Go Read! You'll LOL!!

    3. OK. I went. I read. We are NOT related. ;-)

  7. Ain't it the truth! We had finally settled on a Thai Barber Lady, who has been cutting our hair for about 10 years now. But, over the last year, she has become increasingly ornery (especially to Pam) about what "we want," as opposed to what she thinks would look good.

    Sigh...

    I hate barber shopping...but, it's time again.

    Sigh...

    1. Shopping for a barber is a thankless and time consuming task, with little or no reward, too. I hate it.

  8. Good news about the eyes and JW Green! And I'll put my vote in the good new barber category. Long hair reminds me too much of my colleagues from the College of Arts and Humanities (we folk in the College of Business Admin referred to them as "Ahs") --you know, the holdover hippie type.

Lookin' good, Buck! ( and, I'm with Andy -- the slightly more filled out look becomes you!)
