So we're just in from a beer run out to the Class VI Store (with a side-trip to the base pharmacy to pick up some antibiotics to kill yet another one of those gum infections I seem to get every two or three months, Digressions Я Us) and I was shocked. Shocked, I tell ya. The Class VI Store had NO Guinness. Well, no Guinness of the Stout variety; they did have Black Lager, but that ain't Capital-G Guinness.
Now I normally don't drink that swill fine Irish brew, except for a pint or two about every three years in the dead o' winter. T'was a time when I would drink a lot of that stuff in the winter, but that was back when I lived in Ol' Blighty and the pubs were always a bit on the chilly side, often chillier than the beer in my glass. But that was then...
This is now. We went looking for Guinness in honor of our blog-father, for we hear there will be a nationwide get-together to honor Lex at 1700 hrs PST tomorrow. There will be a physical gathering in San Diego at The Usual Place (a joint called Shakespeare's, so I'm told) and other gatherings are coming together in cities and towns all over this fair land. The objective is to raise a glass o' Guinness... For Strength!... in honor of Lex. Yeah, a wake, of sorts. So now I have a mini-quest to fulfill before 1800 hrs local tomorrow.
I'll be in Levelland and will drink a beer in salute. I wish could zip on over to Portales, but I'm headed to friend's house and to a wedding on Saturday.
ReplyDeleteDrink a second Guinness for me - my birthday ya know!
Drink a second Guinness for me - my birthday ya know!
DeleteI think I can do that. Hell, I KNOW I can do that! ;-)
8:00pm EST will be our time tomorrow. I will hoist a Woodford's Reserve Small Batch Bourbon (recommended by Lex, of course) and The Oracle will have a Guinness.
ReplyDeleteAlso planning a New England gathering on or about April 14th in Auburn, MA. Anyone here who would be interested in joining us please email me at PooRahBunny at comcast dot net. I will be honored to add you to our group.
8:00pm EST will be our time tomorrow.
DeleteI'm thinkin' that East Coast time and Central time works better for most folks. 1700 is pretty early, but then again... it's Friday. I had a standing rule in civilian life to NEVER be anywhere BUT the bar at that time on Fridays. The rule didn't hold sometimes, but it was only the rare occasions when it was breached.
Buck, you can always cook corned beef in that stuff. It's better than water.
ReplyDeleteI can't understand why any purveyor of fine beverages wouldn't have Guinness in stock, considering the date.
We still have over a week until St. Paddy's Day, but I suppose some folks start early. ;-)
DeleteIt may be time for another brisket... so I'll keep yer other in mind.
Hope you find the Stout. In the meantime, ditto what Bag said. Although the zipping in my case would probably take 3 days! Also drink another one of those Guinnesses; it ain't my birthday yet, but my Navy grandson just got back into his home FL port after a Mediterranean tour. So drink one for him.
ReplyDeleteHmmm. We're up to three now... it could get pretty well-oiled out tomorrow. And tell your grandson I said "welcome home!"
DeletePepper and I will join in.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Moogie.
DeleteWill hoist and tip the glass at the proper time. Pro'l'ly won't be Guinness (For Strength!)-- I'd have loved to buy Captain LeFon one-- but he'd want us to tip what we like.
ReplyDeleteDang. I wish I'd met him like I met you. Hero. Long established, we were on the same deployment ca. 1986, him on the Conny, me and mine deep in the bilges of the California.
Different situation though.
Speaking of tips, I once calculated the price of SOCAL gas gallons by the capacity of the Beemer 'cycle he was riding and sent him that size via Pay Pal. Quite puzzled was he by the "tip" of something like $23.17. Infinite bargain for all he's written, especially for the Rhythms compendium.
Sergeant, I feel like you in sadness for the loss of your blogfather. I can't imagine what you are thinking about your mil-kids. Well, yes I can, looking at that picture on your sidebar.
I may take a page outta yer book and raise a glass o' single-malt tonight, Bob. There's just something in me that recoils at the thought of Guinness right now... mebbe it's the hour.
DeleteI hear ya about our feelings toward the Good Captain. I've had the comments page(s) on the tribute post open since Wednesday and have read all 1,128 of the messages posted there. What an amazing outpouring of grief, support, and loss...
as it will be 04:00 CET Saturday, I will have to raise my glass a wee bit earlier.

It's the thought, not the hour... right?
Delete2000 in Jacksonville. Hmmm, by then should be half in the bag from the usual bottle of wine with the steak tonight. Instead of stout, I will have a bottle of Champagne
ReplyDeleteto share on the celebration.
Buck hits it on the head about when Guinness is enjoyed; In a chilly pub over near Eire or England.
I wish I knew of any local Lex followers here in Jax. I have a full keg and about 250 bottles of wine and spirits, probably enough to last the evening!
Check yer mail, Darryl.
DeleteHeh.
ReplyDeleteI've had more mail in the past hour than in the last month!
I'll try to be there, but not sure how late I will be.
