Another o' Life's Lil Mysteries

I guess I gotta go buy new slippers, eh?

One wonders exactly how thangs like this happen.  By that I mean the left slipper is fallin' right apart, with three MAJOR holes in it, while the right slipper is completely intact, with nothing so much as a tear or anythang.  Lotsa scuffs, though.  I suppose I shouldn't complain, coz these slippers lasted me for well over 20 years.  Seriously.  Here's me wearin' those same slippers, back in 1990:

Christmas, 1990.  Ferndale, Michigan.
I just KNOW I'm not gonna be able to find exactly what I want, once I start lookin'.  I think I'll begin with LL Bean, though... which is where the current slippers came from.

―:☺:―

Semi-mysterious...  I mentioned this past Thursday that we had the windows and door (singular, there's but one) open yet again on what was another nice day (for winter) here on The High Plains o' New Mexico.  What I didn't mention is the fact I turn the furnace off on these sorts o' days to keep from heating all o' P-Ville while I'm out on the verandah.  So, I mosey over to the thermostat to turn off the heater and what do I see?  The heat is off, already.  And why is this noteworthy?  The last time we had a day like Thursday was the previous Sunday, so that means I went for the better part o' a week without my furnace bein' turned on.  This apartment must be a whole hella lot better-insulated than I give it credit fer bein', mainly coz we dropped into the high 20s on most nights this past week.

The heat is still off, as we speak.  This will do great thangs for the budget.

Update, later that same day.  Well, the design has changed slightly over the last 20+ years and I do believe the price has gone up, too.  But what hasn't?

My tootsies shall be warm and stylish again in three to five days.  Well... warm, anyhoo.

  1. I am currently wearing Brew Shoes. Gift from my wife after my last slippers wore out (in a hell of a lot less than 20 years)

Available at Amazon - what the hell isn't, anyway?

  2. Buck, I finally am going to have to purchase a new pair of slippers.

They were once just house shoes. But, being flat-footed as I am, I found them so damn comfortable that I started wearing them everywhere. I'd go to Kroger, WalMart, the bank...running errands, etc. wearing them.

Pam bitched and moaned, because she had to be seen "out" with me wearing house shoes with dried paint, loose tie-ups, etc. She finally quit her bitching and learned to live with it.

I've had those babies for about 12 years. I call them "moccasins," which makes her just cringe & laugh at the same time. But what happened was this...last week it got time to start mowing grass here in NW LA. I looked all over this place for my "lawn mowin' shoes," and couldn't find them. I'm pretty sure Pam threw them away because she got tired of looking at them on the side porch (where I always keep them so I know where they are...which sucks, because she keeps her friggin' crocs out there, too. Do I bitch about it? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!).

What was I saying? Oh yeah, my lawn mowin' shoes have disappeared, so I just cut the grass wearing my "moccasins" (which she hates them, too). The damn things are stained green now, and splattered with paint, and God knows what else. So, I'm going to have to replace them. If memory serves, they were Twelve Dollars at The WalMart.

I hope they still sell the same brand. And, what with Obama's economy, I'm expecting that prices should be lower now. One can hope.

As to the furnace being turned off deal...us, too. Goodness gracious, it was a fabulous February! Actually had to run the AC a couple of days...didn't have to, just did to test her out, and knock the humidity down a couple of notches. Worked, too.

As to the top pitcher...NYUK! Reminds me of some snow boots I had in Colorado back in the day that the neighbor's dog got a hold of once.

    NYUK!

    1. I was sittin' here thinkin' if there was sumthin' I used to wear that pissed TSMP off and I can't think o' anythang, for the life o' me. But I'm sure there was sumthin', and I don't wanna even go to "the thangs I used t'DO" that irritated her. That's a Sears & Roebuck's sized volume, but we digress. One of the very few virtues o' the single life is bein' entirely free o' looks o' disapproval and such. That, and the fact that shit doesn't EVER "mysteriously" disappear. If sumthin' gets gone it's coz I WANT it to be gone.

In re: winter. I hear ya. This winter's been a blessing after that ass-kicker we had last year. I'm likin' it a LOT.

  4. Wicked Good Slippers. LL Bean - you can't go wrong. And I would imagine if you tell them about yours - they may do something for you. LL Bean is like that. Have you ever been to the flagship store in Freeport, ME? It's 3 hours from here and we have been known to make a day trip out of it. It is a VERY cool place.

Yes I have, as a s'matter o' fact. SN2 still owns a house in Brunswick, left over from the days when he was on the pre-commissioning crew of the USS Mason... which was bein' built at Bath Shipyards. I went out that way to visit a couple o' few years back and a trip to the LL Bean store in Freeport was a MUST-DO. I don't believe it's (meta)physically possible to leave that store without buyin' sumthin', anythang. I took back a lot more than I left P-Ville with, as a result.

Daughter-in-law Alisa used to sign on with LL Bean as seasonal Christmas help, just to get the employee discount. The extended family benefited mightily from that adventure, as well, coz we ALWAYS got the coolest Christmas gifts.

  6. Buck, those slippers should go into the record books. Except for the blowout part, the rest of them look amazingly well preserved. Remember those old Toyota ads when a proud owner of a ten year old Toyota would kick up his heels and say he had 450,000 miles on his odometer and the car was still running strong? If LL Bean ran that kind of ad, you would definitely be a candidate. And like Kris says, if they heard your story, they just might give you a new pair or at the least a discount.

    1. The slippers served me well, Dan, and they DO have some miles on 'em, quite literally. They've been around the block quite a few times. I might look into pimpin' Bean. Couldn't hurt!

  7. I thought those ads were from VW.

    Shows what I know/can remember/whatever.

  8. It's going to be hard to give them up for a new pair, but I'd have to say you got your money's worth out of them. If the new pair last's 20 more years, well we won't go there!

  9. I bought new house shoes after wearing my old ones for about 20 years. They cost mucho, but I figure I will these for the next 20 years. I did this comment from my Fire.

In re: costing mucho. I'm a FIRM believer in "ya gets whats ya pay for." False economy is just that: false.

  11. That is one comfy, well-broken-in pair of slippers! The new ones will be, too. In this house, when we replace ancient footwear (or pretty much anything else) we save the old ones because we might need them someday as lawn-mowing shoes, or some such.

We're kind of pitiful (and surrounded by a bunch of old crap! Moving out of this house is going to be a nightmare).

    1. Well, I got outta the lawn-mowing bid'niz about 14 years ago so there's NO earthly reason for me to save the ratty old slippers. Except mebbe for posterity's sake. Whaaaa?

  12. No truer words, Moogie!

I am surrounded by so much worthless junk that I feel like one of them "hoarders."

Sure, I throw out old bent tools, sheets that are threadbare, children, etc. But, good moccasins that have comforted me over decades???

I just couldn't bear to do it...

  13. Yep, I would say it was time to replace.

I have a pair dear foam slippers that I have to replace! Wish I could say they lasted as long as yours but those have been the best dang ones I've ever owned.

Your comments reminded me of a sweather that I have ( I like the long sweater coats) When I wear my green one my Son always says " I wish you wouldn't wear that one, People think you are wearing your robe" Which only makes me want to wear the Green One even More :)

Buck, in these here parts we call that "making the offering to the Bean God". We've done our share over the years.

Did you notice when you were there what was missing on all the exterior doors? Locks. They are open 24/7/365. Oddest thing I've ever seen.
