Today's Happy Hour Soundtrack

Variations on a theme of "Stand"...  first up is the inimitable Ben E. King, from my high school days:

Fast-forward to the 1980s and the Clash:

And we'll end with Tammy.  I wanted to embed the Lyle Lovett version of this tune but embedding is disabled, the curse of bloggers everywhere.  That said... if you like the tune you should chase this link.  Lyle's version of the tune eclipses Tammy's even though she OWNS the song, for all practical (and legal) purposes.  But that said... here's Ms. Wynette:

And here we stand.  Or sit, as the case may be.  Heh.

  1. Buck I'm surprised at you. That's quite the happy hour line-up. But Tammy Wynette and Lyle Lovette? What were you thinking? I thought it was the singing you couldn't stand. Don't get me wrong, I like Lyle as long as I don't have to look at a head of hair that looks like someone took a kitchen mix-master to it and those Mick Jagger lips? YECH! What was Julia Roberts thinking?

  2. I loves me some Lyle, Deb. He is one of perhaps four or five artists (Van Morrison, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, and the Stones are the others) of which I buy everything they record, sight unseen. I'll go out of my way to go to a Lovett concert... I love his singin', I love his playin', I love his back up band, and I love his arrangements. I'd have his baby if I were of that sorta sexual orientation. And yeah... what WAS young Julia thinkin'? She had him and let him GO. Foolish woman.

  3. I forgot all abut him, believe it or not, but definitely going to get me an iTunes card and put him on my iPod. It's odd how when they aren't on the radio stations' propaganda list the old guys don't get played and you forget about them. Thanks for the memories.

Heh. Thanks. Thanks a LOT, Deb. "Old guys." Oh, lawdy, lawdy, lawdy... ;-)

  5. Lyle is a weird looking dude, for sure. But, Julia Roberts is a skaggot of skeletal proportions. I know, I know, I know...I am quite possibly the only male on the planet that finds her unattractive...but I do.

Lyle was too good for her.

Thanks for the Ben E. King. We actually watched Stand By Me the other night, and The Mrs. watched Urban Cowboy the other day where that song was also featured...but I think it was Mickey Gilley performing it...not sure, because it's been decades since I looked at Urban Cowboy.

Okay, I'm rambling...back in focus now.

Growing up listening to country music, I never "got it" when it came to Tammy. Oh, I'm sure she was a good person and all. And, she certainly had more appeal than Possum. But, I preferred the 80's gals...not that they were more talented, or prettier...well, yeah...that was why!

Buck, I'm not to tell a globber how to put together a post (because mine SUCK), but you left out Hillary.

    Just sayin'...

Thanks again. Good stuff, and good memories.

  6. ...but you left out Hillary.

    What did she sing? ;-)

re: JR. I think her laugh is infectious in a good way. Just for grins and giggles I googled recent pics of her and think she's aged well. But your point is well-taken: we prefer our women more zaftig than she'll EVER be.

  7. What did she sing?

    Ummm...good point.

Actually I have heard sound clips of Hillary singing the national anthem, and it ain't pretty. I mean, it's prettier than her face, but still hard to listen to. I guess I've got a prejudice against that midwestern (Chicago) twangy deal that Chicago gals have in their voice. She's probably an excellent singer, and I just hate her because I hate her.

Dunno, Buck. Something about Julia just always rubbed me the wrong way. And, it's not that she's got no meat on the bone, either. There are some rail-thin gals I find attractive.

I've never been able to put my finger on it really. FDIL thought I was "nuts," and The Mrs. did, too, because I make a big deal about what a skag she is when they look at one of her films. Aw crap, it don't matter...

    Just NOT an admirer.

  8. ...I just hate her because I hate her.

Heh. There's a lot of us out there. Well, I don't HATE the woman, I just have a very large and considerable active dislike for her. Think of that ol' sayin' about what one wouldn't do if she was on fire. That's me.

Further about Julia: we all likes we what we likes, and vice-versa.

  9. Well Buck, I guess we found the kinda' guy that digs Julia.

  10. Late here, as usual, but I don't like Julia either. Never did, never will. I think Hollywood gives girls like that a break sometimes because they're right on line between being half ugly and half mediocre and because that will appeal to a large portion of the audience. I won't even comment on Hillary. But I like all of the music in this post. All of it. I'll check out the Lyle Lovett version of the last one.

  11. Ok, so y'all don't like Julia, but what about Catherine Zeta-Jones? Now that is one beautiful woman. (don't know if she can sing or not, but it really doesn't matter)

  12. Dan: Lyle's version of "Stand By Your Man" is on his third album (Lyle Lovett and His Large Band). The studio version is just freakin' POWERFUL... and he featured the song for a while in his live performances. It's been a while since I've seen him... we don't get too many name acts in Portales, lol... so he may have changed.

Deb: CZJ is pretty, I'll give ya that. But see my "zaftig" comment, above.

  13. "I was country when country wasn't cool." Do your remember that Tammy song? Well it is pretty much me. And I like Lyle too.

  14. Oh and Jesse loves the Ben E. King "Stand by Me." It is her favorite song - evah.

  15. I do remember that song, Lou. I used to hate it. ;-)

Just be polite... that's all I ask.
