Today's Happy Hour Soundtrack

Some dobro playin'... of a rather spectacular sort... from Jerry Douglas:

Somewhere around the 2:30 mark in this medley Douglas launches into his take on one of my favorite Allman Bros instrumentals... "Little Martha"... and delivers a brief but compelling version of same.  I was just gonna link the Allmans but since we're here...

This is one of my all-time favorite tunes, for reasons I've never been able to articulate.  The song hit me the very first time I heard it and has stayed with me to this very day.  The playin' is simply superb and evokes deep, deep feelings within me.  Some day I may stumble on the whys and wherefores... but for the moment it's just something to enjoy.  I hope you take the time to listen to one or the other, Gentle Reader.

The tune fits the weather around here of late.  We're in that oh-so-brief seasonal moment where sitting outside is most comfortable; which is to say sitting in full sun clad only in a sweatshirt to ward off the seasonal chill, and basking in the weak warmth of that autumnal sun that graces us on days like this.  These days need to be snatched up with no hesitation or regret because the snow is not far behind and we shall find ourselves housebound for the duration.  I'm not looking forward to that, no matter how brief the experience may be.

Fall.  I love it.

  3. Glad you're enjoying the outdoors in Portales. Great weather here in TX too, Buck. Baby sitting our grandkids for a week. To me the meaning of autumn has always been "enjoy it while you can." ("It" being the weather and all other things as well.) And I do. Enjoy it. For the last couple of days, I've been following the six year old around the block on his scooter. "Little Martha" is a great song. I confess I never heard it before but I liked it so much I looked it up on the tube of You. Interesting info about how Allman came to write it. I've already played it a few times while writing this note. It'll be added to my "favorites" list.

  4. Man, I've gotta break out some Allmans this weekend. I haven't really sat down and listened to, say, Live At The Fillmore East, in ages.

  5. Dan: Did you read the Wikipedia entry for the song? The tune has quite the history and is an all-time fave with a lot of guitarists. Leo Kottke allegedly said "Little Martha" is the best acoustic guitar tune ever written... and his cover is excellent.

    Enjoy those grandbabies!

Lou: Yep, indeed! I've played both these tunes a couple o' times while answering the morning mail...

  6. Ahhh.

I have ventured north to Little Rock for the weekend and have discovered that I have no winter-ish clothes hat fit me since I dumped a load of poundage last year. I'm gonna hit the shops with Allmans wafting lazily around in my head.

  7. Moogie: The downside of weight loss. OTOH, prolly not so much for women who love to shop!

Just be polite... that's all I ask.
