At the Wash 'n' Fold this afternoon:
Sweet Young Thang: (Handing me my laundry) That'll be $17.76, please.Well, I guess. In certain circles.
Me: My favorite number!
SYT: (Handing me my change) $2.23 is your change... and is 1776 really your favorite number?
Me: One of 'em. Coz it ain't every year a great country is founded now, izzit?
SYT: (Flash of recognition, followed by a brilliant smile) Oooh...smaaart!
So now I suppose we should refer to you an Buck, the Smart Edjumacator. Planning on joining the local teachers' union? Yuo could be a great mole!
ReplyDeleteDid SYT bat her eyelashes at you?
Chicks dig a quick wit.
ReplyDeleteThe fact that she had a "flash of recognition" makes me smile. Maybe not every sweet young thing skipped History Class.
ReplyDeleteIf I told you my word verification, you would not believe it.
Okay, my WV was "elderguy"
ReplyDeleteShe ripped you off of a single penny; 20 bucks minus 17.76 should be $2.24.
ReplyDeleteBut then again, her thought was worth a penny.

You've inadvertently pushed one of my buttons, Moogie. I don't see WHY one must have a BA... or better, usually MUCH better... to teach in these United States. I say that based upon my experience with certain non-degreed professionals who ran rings around their BS counterparts. But that was in the IT world, yanno? You would not BELIEVE the frickin' degreed idiots I encountered during my working life. Or mebbe you would.
Re: the batting of eyes. I'm ALWAYS erring on the side of "No, this couldn't possibly be" when this sort o' thing happens. But the girl was VERY friendly. Maybe she has a grandfather fetish. It's a strange world.
Sam: That they do. Wit makes up for a lot of shortcomings in other areas. Don't ask how I know. I just DO.
The fact that she had a "flash of recognition" makes me smile.
Me too, sorta. You hadda be there, of course, but my initial comment went right over her pretty lil head. There are some things I expect EVERYONE should know and relate to, "1776" is one of 'em.
And don't be abusing MY wv, mmm-kay?
Darryl: I LOVE pedantic comments. Srsly! I was writing from memory, so blame me. I'm sure Girlfriend got it right.
I have to agree with you on the BS to teach thang, but I won't rant here.
ReplyDeleteIt is nice that the SYT did recognize the year after being prompted. Chance are she could not have given you the correct change without a fancy cash register.
I'm with ya on your last, Lou. And the other things, too.
