Schadenfreude 'R' Us... Pittsburgh loses to Montreal, 5-2. At this point I don't really CARE who wins the Cup; my wish has been fulfilled in that it won't be those frickin' Flightless Birds.
Update, 2200 hrs: Noted Red Wings blogger George Malik:
While I rooted for the Montreal Canadiens during their game 7 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Wednesday night, I must also admit that I felt and now feel a bit of buyer's remorse, so to speak. The Pittsburgh Penguins and their fans now know how Red Wings fans who've been around since the back-to-back Cup wins in 97 and 98 feel every time the Wings are eliminated and/or every time someone else lifts the Stanley Cup.
[...]
Once your team wins the Cup, witnessing your team do anything less than defend it or retake it kicks you in the hockey fan's heart, because one tends to become very, very attached to that silver mug. Once you've sipped out of it, or watched your team lift it...Nothing less will suffice. And in that sense, I actually feel sympathy, perhaps for the only time, for Sidney Crosby, the Penguins, and their fans.Well, Good On George... he's a better man than I. I view this fine turn of events as simple payback for the seemingly thousands of times (once would be one time too many) during this playoff season I've had to watch that disgusting Versus ad with Crosby raising the Cup AT THE JOE. Payback, baybee. Payback.
Losing "your" Cup stings to the very core. Every time. It's the worst feeling in the sporting world, and I wouldn't wish it on anyone, even Crosby.
Oh. One more thing. There's the matter of the Gold Medal game in Vancouver, too. Just sayin'.
Oui!

Vive Les Habitants!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yup. Tonite's game was one for the ages. You might get a kick out of this, Glenn. ;-)
ReplyDeleteYea, I enjoyed it also, Buck. Hometown hero Gionta was the reason I was rooting for them, usually I don't root for French Canadians for various reasons. The Cosby factor you mentioned was sweet though.
ReplyDeleteBTW Buck, I've watched more playoff hockey this year than probably the rest of my life combined. I've loved every minute and look forward to seeing the rest. My prediction - Montreal.
"Red Wings fans who've been around since the back-to-back Cup wins in 97 and 98..."
ReplyDeleteWhich I would guess is an awful lot of 'em. Perfect time to jump on that bandwagon!
Avs fan firing obligatory shot, moving on.
That said, jumping on that Habs-wagon myself, at least until the finals. I think I still want a Western Conference team to win it, and I don't hate the Sharks or the Hawks, but I think I hate the Hawks less. Plus, I lived 10 years in a Chicago suburb, and California is LAME.
Pulling for Philly by the way, but ONLY because I love that "coming back from a 3-0 deficit" thing. Screw Pronger.
...I've watched more playoff hockey this year...
ReplyDeleteYou picked a good year to pick it up again, Small-Tee. I think the games have been outstanding, the officiating much less so. ;-)
Which I would guess is an awful lot of 'em. Perfect time to jump on that bandwagon!
Heh. This would encompass EVERY Avs fan, given your time frame. Coz I do believe the Avdiques had been in Denver for about two years in '97...
I'm torn between the B's and the Habs in the East, but that point may be moot now that Big Mo appears to be on the Flyers side. I'm gonna root for the Sharks in the WCF even though I have serious culture biases against CA. I have this long-standing grudge against the Hawks...
And the Flyers are doing a very-Laviolette-esque job on the Bruins.
ReplyDeleteI saw this up-against-the-wall stuff more than once when he was in Raleigh.
You called that series, Buck. Now, if only your prediction concerning the B's - Philly will happen (*gulp*)
