In the form of links and things from the in-box...
First: a highly entertaining Michael Yon parody site... Michael Yawns Online. Sample:
Everyone knows by now that Brigadier General Menard is going to get a court martial. Menard is the Canadian guy who shot down a US helicopter while "accidentally" discharging his rifle because he was distracted by a hockey game. Was it really an accident?
Now the Canadians claim that Menard shot his gun at the airfield, and didn't shoot down the helicopter. How many PAO monkeys randomly pecked away at typewriters before that piece of fiction was written? Good thing I was there, on the front lines of the base at Kandahar Airfield, to tell the real story.
This Menard is the same guy who blew up that strategic bridge in Kandahar while watching another hockey game. Why was hockey more important than that bridge? I could maybe understand if it was the Superbowl, but hockey? That's like gay lacrosse on ice. Good thing he didn't blow up the hockey game itself. But with Montreal still in the playoffs, who knows what this guy is capable of.
Heh. "Gay lacrosse on ice." Those of you who read milblogs are well aware of the brouhaha surrounding Yon, all of it self-inflicted, in my humble. Yon has done outstanding work in the past but the general consensus among the milblogging community is the guy needs a vacation. This parody site mimics Yon's current tone and attitude. Biting satire.
Speaking of hockey... Our third Game Seven of these 2010 playoffs is on tonight... eighth-seeded Montreal vs. fourth-seeded and current Stanley Cup custodians Pittsburgh. ALL the hockey world's abuzz about this one and it's high drama, indeed. Can those upstart Habs dethrone the current champs? Will The Obnoxious Whining Crosby score another Golden Goal to lead his team to the Eastern Conference final? Can Jaroslav Halak continue being the BEST goalie in the playoffs? All those questions will be answered tonight on Versus... beginning at 1900 hrs EDT. (Image from Puck Daddy's Crosby Photoshop contest. Click for larger.)
As for me? Go Habs Go! <=== Imagine that in Bleu-Blanc-Rouge.
From the in-box:
Groups of Americans were traveling by tour bus through Holland .. As they stopped at a cheese farm, a young guide led them through the process of cheese making, explaining that goat's milk was used. She showed the group a lovely hillside where many goats were grazing. 'These' she explained, 'Are the older goats put out to pasture when they no longer produce.' She then asked, 'What do you do in America with your old goats?'A spry old gentleman answered, 'They send us on bus tours!'
Well, that's not entirely true. Some of us get exiled to small dusty towns in the middle o' nowhere.
Finally... from my Buddy Ed In Florida... another salvo in Guitar Wars:
I may be back later...
Maybe bus tours to dusty towns in the middle of nowhere?
ReplyDeleteI like that.
I love the Yawn site!
ReplyDeleteHilarious.
Yeah, Buck...a couple of other blogs that I read have mentioned the Yon thing. I have not delved deeply enough into it to REALLY know anything. But my initial thought (which I shared the first time I read about it) was that even as Soldiers, Marines, etc. can be drastically changed by "too much" combat, perhaps a journalist/blogger can by being in the thick of things, also. I'm pretty sure a good vacation...maybe blogging about backyard barbecues, or trips to Hawaii might be in order. But, what do I know?
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed the guitar recital. I do not know who this fellow is, but I am pretty sure he is probably the best guitarist in Connecticut!
And, just to finish this stellar comment off...I'll bet that there are a bunch of old goats that would gladly trade places with you.
Just sayin'...
BTW, I forgot to guffaw out loud over the "gay lacrosse on ice" reference. Dude stayed up late one night figuring that one out...
ReplyDeleteI did not forget to guffaw over the "gay lacrosse" thang. I have read a bit about the Yon controversy recently, but for some reason, I fell out of love with him a couple of years ago and do not read his blog anymore. I think it was some criticizing he did that I was not in agreement with, but I just turned him off and tuned him out.
ReplyDeleteBuck, the Phish guy, Anastasio, has a real soft touch. I especially like those chimes all through.
ReplyDeleteMoogie: There are such tours, but they mainly go to Arizona. Heh.
ReplyDeleteDarryl: Glad ya liked it.
Andy: Agreed on the first two counts, not so sure about the "trading places" bit. That's prolly a "grass is greener" take, if it exists at all. ;-)
Lou: I only visit Yon about once a month these days. His tone changed a LOT in between Iraq and Afghanistan.
Dan: Agreed. This particular piece is stellar.
