A Couple of Things

Disappointment R Us.  I read this headline (The Fat Lady Sings for Keith Olbermann) and thought "Cool.  It's about damned time." I was thinking, of course, that cleaning house was one of the first actions taken by MS-NBC's new owners.  And then after reading the piece I realized the deal ain't done, in both regards.  Olbermann is still on the air and the Comcast-NBC merger hasn't been finalized.  But you can bet the farm that Olbermann WILL be gone once MS-NBC is in Comcast's hands.  There's no way a profit-focused enterprise like Comcast would keep him... his ratings are in the frickin' cellar, or below.  KO fits at NBC, on the other hand, coz they're all about Lefty propaganda.  That should change when Comcast takes the reins... coz smart bid'niz men want to sell to everyone, not just a niche.

The Olbermann piece is worth your time, by the way.  For stuff like this:
And so the fat lady is not just singing for Olbermann and MS-NBC: Rather, she is belting out an aria that rushes Katrina-like past the designer finery of Old Media grandees in the audience of Manhattan's Metropolitan Opera, rattles the Swarovski crystal chandeliers above their heads, hurtles across Central Park, and pierces the floor-to-ceiling windows of Olbermann's  $4.2-million 40th-floor Trump Palace roost.

It is from here that Olbermann leads the progressive media battle on behalf of America's downtrodden, joined by neighboring New York Times staffers and mainstream media executives, fighting their self-described war on privilege from foxholes developed by Donald Trump. The various Trump Towers dotting upper Manhattan are, collectively, a progressive Pentagon, headquarters for the media war on Middle America...with Olbermann among the most polished of its brass.

...That is, until America began paying attention. The result: The audience of Countdown has sunk to roughly 20% of FOX News-viewers led by Bill O'Reilly. And now the fat lady is howling her delight as she joins a decades-long string of females in Keith's life -- beginning with his mother, who thought her son needed psychological help -- whose fist-bumps will come when he has exited their lives.
Heh.  Ain't it something when your Mom thinks you need help?  Turns out the lady was right.

Can anyone explain why the right side of the blogosphere is totally silent on the pending/proposed demise of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell", The One's lil blurb about gays in the military during the SOTU, and yesterday's Senate hearings on the subject?  Plenty of Lefty blogs (predictably) are writing about DADT, there's no lack of coverage in the MSM, but there's not one single link to a conservative blog on this subject at memeorandum's page as I write.  I find that curious.

I'll break the silence on the right.  Don't change the law.  Don't fix what essentially isn't broken.  Yes, DADT is a compromise but it's been an effective compromise since Clinton and the congress made that policy the law of the land.  If change is required, then change the conditions surrounding vindictive outings that seem to be occurring too often these days.  That's wrong on many different levels.

Reasonable people don't give a big rat's ass about other people's sex life.  And reasonable people don't flaunt their sexuality in any way, shape, or form... gay or straight.  Sex is ultimately a private matter and it should remain so.  Unless you're serving in the military, where it's a matter of law.

And then there's this:
A Priest and a Rabbi were sitting next to each other on an airplane.
After a while, the Priest turned to the Rabbi and asked,“Is it still a requirement of your faith that you not eat pork?”
The Rabbi responded, “Yes, that is still one of our laws.”
The Priest then asked, “Have you ever eaten pork?”
To which the Rabbi replied, “Yes, on one occasion I did succumb to temptation and tasted a ham sandwich.”
The Priest nodded in understanding and went on with his reading.
A while later, the Rabbi spoke up and asked the Priest,“Father, is it still a requirement of your church that you remain celibate?”
The Priest replied, “Yes, that is still very much a part of our faith.”
The Rabbi then asked him,
“Father, have you ever fallen to the temptations of the flesh?”
The Priest replied, “Yes, Rabbi, on one occasion I was weak and broke my faith.
The Rabbi nodded understandingly and remained silent, thinking, for about five minutes.
Finally, the Rabbi said, “Beats the hell out of a ham sandwich, doesn't it?”
Heh.  The hat tip goes to a friend who sent that in e-mail.

  1. Irt; DADT. I think nobody military related is mentioning DADT is because the subject has been beaten to death. Plus many Milblog types may still be serving and it wouldn't be right to discuss Policy that will be decided by our betters.

It just does not matter. I hope that anyone qualified to fight and die for our country can do so, just keep the politics of se x ual ity out of the military work place.

  2. It just does not matter.

That, in a nutshell, was my point.

  3. Buck, I am with the "don't fix it if it ain't broke" crowd. I was never asked what my sexual proclivity was while in the Navy, it was joked about a lot but we did that with everyone Gay or otherwise. It never affected operational effectiveness. My biggest issue is that there is this propensity of the Dem's to go in and muck with the Military for some odd reason. I guess they as a whole are lost on the National Security issue and feel thier best way to exert their "manlyness" is to make being Gay "legal".
What AssHats. I did say something over at my place, but I don't draw a lot of traffic.

On the KO issue, it won't happen fast enough for me, I'd love to go to a stone throwing on his ass along with Chris-tingly Leg's and that MadCow woman. That whole channel needs to be tossed. I only hope that Comcast has the weavues for the Job!

BT: Jimmy T sends from the CZ!

  4. Buck, KO is not a horses' ass. He is what is expelled from it. At the risk of blog pimping, this was my first attempt at creative photo work. It sucks, but so does KO:

As to DODT, I've been thinking a lot about the proposal to eliminate it. Having never served in the military myself, I can only ponder the ramifications on the troops, morale, the homo, etc.

Actually, I'm going over to read a piece by a friend/blogger right now that I skimmed earlier on the subject. He is a homo, and a hard-right, military supporting, patriotic dude. I'm processing it all...but just for my own good. My opinion will have ZERO impact on what happens. I know that both of my military sons serve with homos. They don't seem to worry too much about it. But then again, not everybody was raised up to accept the differences in others. But, thanks for bringing it up.

Man...go out there and scream at the clouds to "shut up," or something...

  5. Jimmy: I think it was in comments at Lex's place where someone asked the rhetorical question "What happens when two males decide to put a lip-lock on each other at the New Year's Eve dance at the O-club?" What, indeed. Nothing good will come of this.

LA Andy: I knew at least two gay guys in my time... one got outed and discharged (an AFA grad on his first tour) and one just kinda cruised along for the time I knew him. Like Darryl said: it's no big deal... unless someone wants to make it so. That's the part that gets my knickers in a twist.

  6. The problem, of course, is that when you're closeted, you're a prime candidate for blackmail of all sorts.

It's hard for me to tell the mood of the troops, since I've been away from it for 25 years now. Back in the early 80's, we all knew some guys and gals who operated on different current. It mostly wasn't a problem. I don't see it being a problem today, either, but the Army and Marines are different; their culture is considerably more socially conservative than Navy or Air Force.

I think eventually we'll get to full acceptance. It could be done now, if we weren't at war. You kinda don't want to throw in too much controversy into operational units in the field.

It would be a big UCMJ upheaval. Buggery is a court martial offense, whether you're hetero or homo, as is oral sex. Then there's fraternization...it's not a simple problem.

  7. Can anyone explain why the right side of the blogosphere is totally silent...?

I can only speak for myself, but I will say that my eagerness to enslave, oppress, banish, et cetera et cetera entirely innocent people who don't fit my idea of normal -- these things have been vastly overstated.

I'm not gay, not in the military, and because I'm not in the military I am not the commander of a theater of operations nor am I responsible to train recruits or turn them into finely crafted fighting-killing-machines. The degree to which I have a dog in the hunt, is confined entirely to me being a citizen of the country being defended.

We have people whose job it is to put into effect whatever policies provide for the most vigorous defense possible, for the safety of the people who live in the country as well as those who serve. And I hope that they are not so motivated by cynical politics, that my woefully uninformed opinion would add little or nothing to the ongoing debate. Now, if they're getting ready to make a wrong decision, let's see the evidence and then maybe someone can get me all angsty and excited and agitated over it. In the meantime, I'm all "Whatever those in charge say" -- and that assumes they've formed a decent understanding of the ramifications. They own the decision. This is the way a real conservative thinks.

I mean, when I'm not offering homeless people $5 to beat up on each other, for fun. And eating babies. Anyway. You asked, and I think that's the most likely explanation.

Just be polite... that's all I ask.
