A Cuban Crafter Cigar Factory worker checks on the cigars
Amid those sweet smells, though, workers are worried about a new federal tobacco tax that threatens
Like dozens of cigar companies dotting
"Many of our rollers are worried," said Hector Ventura, operations manager for El Credito. "They think that if we have less sales, they will lose their jobs. We know for sure the tax increase will reduce our sales. It's not good for our business, not good at all."
I DO feel bad for the cigar industry, and most especially for the guys that make hand-rolled cigars. As noted above, they stand to lose the most from this tax increase. I’m not too worried about the taxes on my cigars going up… mainly because cigars are a recreational item for me and I smoke less than one a day if you average it all out. I can absorb the increase without much pain, speaking strictly from an economic-impact point of view, and I don't plan to change my consumption habits. The amount of the tax increase pisses me off considerably, though. It's not enough for the government to double or even triple the tax on cigars... nooo, they have raise it by a factor of eight. That's just a bit excessive, innit?
I have some strong opinions about the equality aspect of taxing the living Hell out of smokers, too. The tax on tobacco is a regressive tax with a disproportionate impact on the poorer among us. THAT irritates me to no end.
"I can make a firm pledge," he said in

Government and private research has found that smoking rates are higher among people of low income.

I’m pretty danged glad I don’t smoke cigarettes any longer, however. Consider this:
God help you if you smoke cigarettes and live in

Forgive me a self-indulgent moment, Gentle Reader, coz this blog is also my journal (sorta). I'm still down and out where the "gastric distress” thing I talked about this past Monday is concerned. There has been no real improvement in the situation and I'm still tethered to the RV for all intents and purposes. I called the clinic out at the base yesterday and had a phone consultation with a nurse-practitioner, who informed me there's a bug going around and that said bug typically lasts five or six days. Color me surprised, as I thought this sort of thing usually lasts a day or two at the most. So... I've been given some dietary restrictions and other sorts of counseling... the bottom line being to wait it out and things WILL get better.
Lord, I sure hope so... coz this thing is turning into a right-royal PITA. Literally.
Government intrusion - this is why the U.S. Tax Code is more than 80,000 pages in length. This is where the Democrats really do their damage to our society - and it hurts the poor the most. But, they continue ignoring the many calls for alternate methods to fund the government. No chance of changing this over the next 4 years or so.
ReplyDeleteBT: Jimmy T sends.
I do hope you get to feeling better soon.
ReplyDeleteYou know I'm not a big fan of smokers and their rights. But maybe if cigarettes were not so expensive, low income folk could save a little money and not be on welfare - not. At least this is a tax you have a choice on - buy or not to buy cigarettes. I do hate it that people could lose jobs over the tobacco tax, but then I hate it that people in the oil industry here in Duncan are being let go as we speak.
Apparently, beer is next.
ReplyDeleteOnce the gubmint starts seeing reduced revenue gains from this sin tax, they will say that something else will have to make up the shortfall.
Watch: They will start taxing Bread and essentials, "For the Children".
Break.
Have you tried the immodium solution to your ailment? I had a vicious case of Montezuma's revenge down in Columbia, and me not flying was not an option. I had to stay in a helicopter for 3.5hours at a time, away from the head. So I broke into my survival kit.
Two Immodiums every four hours kept me from going.
Stay strong, Buck!
I have mixed emotions on the tax hikes on cigarettes/cigars, since I'm so rabidly anti-smoking, but I do feel bad that people will lose their jobs. Heck, I work in casinos where smoking is still allowed, if they banned smoking there, I'm sure the gamblers would follow, leaving all the casinos ghost towns, and me out of a job. So I guess that makes me a big, fat hypocrite. *sigh* It wouldn't be the first time, I suppose.
ReplyDeleteSo sorry you've been attacked by a vile and vicious bug, Buck!
The only thing you can really do, unfortunately, is sit it out (no pun intended, 'cause that would be mean!)
No offense to Barco Sin Vela II, but I would NOT recommend the Immodium treatment, unless you absolutely have to go out for some reason, because the bug needs to be flushed from your body completely.
Feel better soon!
You can tax hell out of just about any minority, since the majority will just say, "Hey, it's not me!" Especially if it's something "evil" like smoking. Of course, as that wise man, Martin Niemoller, said...
ReplyDeleteFirst they came for the Communists,
and I didn’t speak up,
because I wasn’t a Communist.
Then they came for the Jews,
and I didn’t speak up,
because I wasn’t a Jew.
Then they came for the Catholics,
and I didn’t speak up,
because I was a Protestant.
Then they came for me,
and by that time there was no one
left to speak up for me.
Hope you feel real better, real soon, Buck.
Wow. Glad I quit smoking before Jeff would marry me. I couldn't afford to do it now! LOL!
ReplyDeleteHope you get over this bug soon. Jeff threw up a couple times in the middle of the night, I hope it isn't something going around. Especially if it lasts that long. I don't think my washing machine could take 6 of us being sick that long!
Just read today's paper. Check this out:

Wow Buck - 5-6 days. That's just wrong in every way.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure they counseled you on a clear liquid diet. It's annoying and boring - but it does help. If they didn't tell you that - give it a try. Clear chicken broth, jello, ginger ale. That kind of thing.
Also, once it's over and you are back to feeling 100%, if you can start taking a vitamin supplement called Acidophilus (or eat one yogurt everyday). It helps restore the natural balance of helpful bacteria that live in your digestive system. A bug like what you've had will flush all of that out, leaving you vulnerable to food issues.
Yes, I have a husband who has stomach problems related to diabetes - these things really do help.
All: Thanks for your kind wishes.
ReplyDeleteDarryl: I won't do the Immodium thing unless, as Christina suggested, I absolutely HAVE to go out. The nurse also had the same advice. But I DO have some of that stuff in the medicine cabinet.
Jimmy: There a LOT of things on our collective plates, but reforming the tax code seems to be one the biggest and most far-reaching things that could be done. It won't happen, though... too damned many lobbyists against.
Jim: One of my favorite quotes of all time, that.
Jenny: I REALLY hope all y'all dodge this bullet. According to the nurse out at Cannon I'm somewhat fortunate in my affliction, as there's no vomiting. She says the Cannon clinic has been nearly overwhelmed with this thing...
And thanks for that link!
Kris: I was told to eat a lot of carbs... potatoes, pasta, rice, bread... and NOTHING fatty, sweet, or greasy. No mention of the traditional "clear" diet, which is what Mom always said.
Damn...I knew there was something I was forgetting to do! Oh well, I'll have to make do.
ReplyDeleteYeah, when my kids had the stomach flu or food poisoning, the nurse told us to follow the BRAT diet: Bananas, rice, apples, toast. It works!
ReplyDeleteMushy: I knew it (the tax increase) was coming, but I didn't lay in a lifetime supply of cigars. What's the point?
ReplyDeleteChristina: I'm basically on the BRAT diet, less the fruit.
I'm not gonna touch the tax issue - damn leeches in D.C. make me enraged to the point of popping a vein.
ReplyDeleteFortunately I've discovered a nice run around the tax issues - Indian nations! They take checks and don't report to the IRS.
I'm sorry to hear you're suffering the stomach bug - that's pure misery. Baby yourself and get better soon.
(You've had a rough couple of weeks, Buck)
.
ReplyDeleteI agree, support the sovereign American Indian Nations! Tobaccobymail.com
It's all so hopenchangey.
The governments imposing these tobacco SIN taxes are actually committing racist acts since most smokers are lower income, and many of them are minorities. Obama committed a racist act with this tax increase. Completely regressive. Why don't they tax cigs $1,000 a carton?
They don't want all people to quit, just enough to toot their horns to justify their tyranny. They will still be able to rely on all those taxes continually coming in from the hardcore addicts, which at the increasingly obscene rates will easily make up the taxes lost from the small percentage of quitters.
Politicians don't want people to stop smoking. If they did they would tax them $100 per pack. But this would just increase the black market even more, and the state would get no money.

absurd thought -
God of the Universe says
raise taxes on the poor
tax cigs 200 percent
hurt poor smokers the most

The Obamanation is an a-hole, pardon my French(whom he would be better off leading)...like you Buck, my 75-100 Cigar a year "habit" is not going to change. I only smoke in warm weather months and never more than 1 a day then.
ReplyDeleteHowever, this tax will just drive the smokers elsewhere...and the tax of course will not do what is intended.
Just one more reason the next American Revolution is not far off....peaceful? Probably/hopefully, and that should begin with everybody that hates what is happening to our Nanny State heading to the nearest American Tea Tax Party on April 15th.
