Just About THE Coolest Present, Ever

Checked my snail mail a few minutes ago... and a couple of packages from SN1 were in my box, including the following:

Along with a United States flag, obviously. I have precious little wall space here in El Casa Móvil De Pennington upon which to hang something, anything. But you can bet yore boots this cert WILL be framed and hung... somewhere. (As ever: click for larger)

  3. Buck, I have, still in my possession, though, stored, at the moment, in "non-temporary" storage in Colorado, two flags I had flown over Afghanistan in A-10's back in 2002-03. No certificates, partly because I didn't know to whom I'd give them. But they were by-God flown by an O-6 in the next tent and I can make you up a certificate of my own if you'd be interested. You just let me know partner. It'll be nearly a year (or more) before I get that stuff out of the warehouse, but when I do . . . You just let me know.

  5. That is so cool!!!

My father is in touch with a group over there somewhere and they sent him a flag, along with a picture of the mission it was flown on. The local newspaper found out about it and printed the picture and a nice article about how he gathered and shipped a bunch of supplies for the Marines. Don't know if he has hung or displayed it somehow, but hope he does.

  6. Thanks, all, for the kind comments. I might post an interior of El Casa Móvil De Pennington showing the flag draped over my "upstairs bedroom" at some point in the near future. But don't hold your breath... I'd have to do some serious house cleaning first. The reading piles are completely out of control, and they're everywhere.

    Jenny: Waay-cool about your Dad!

Doc: Wow. What a generous offer you've made! Are you SURE you want to part with one of those flags? I'm not rejecting your offer out of hand: far from it. It's just that I place such a very high value on items such as this... and am thinking there's surely someone in your family who would deserve one of those flags way more than me.

About that certificate I posted... while it is a nice touch it isn't necessary at all. I feel pretty much the same as I think you do: the simple fact Buck told me the flag was flown on a mission is enough for me, the cert is "gravy."

  7. That is very cool. Jesse has a small pocket flag that Capt. Jeff carried while flying over Baghdad early in the war. He also gave her some Iraq money that he carried in his pocket in case of being shot down. She is quite proud of that little flag.

  8. She is quite proud of that little flag.

I would be, too! Good on Capt. Jeff for giving it to her!

  9. Not "just about" the best gift, THE best gift! (IMHO)
How very, very cool. You're fortunate in your children...:)

That I am, Christina. It does a body good when the kids decide to go into the family business... ;-)

  11. What a great present, Buck.
I have two flags from WWII caskets that have been handed down in my family. They have had places of honor in my home where they are flown (from maybe close to dawn) to sunset on various American holidays. Both, being 48 stars, accompanied caskets of our fallen family members. This year, I am sending one to a daughter living in Australia. She asked for it and I have to admit I have never been able to deny her anything she wanted.
Oh, yeah, thanks for flying your flag on my special day, too.

Just be polite... that's all I ask.
