I Might Be a Lil Concerned About This...

Well, now. Theoretically I’m supposed to keep my awning furled if the wind speed is over 16 mph. But do you see tomorrow’s forecasted temperature, Gentle Reader? And the fact that it will be “partly cloudy” and 104? And Tuesday’s forecast is worse…sunny and 99. I just might keep my awning down and chance that wind if it’s steady and there are no gusts. Either that or buy some of that Mylar insulation Lin has been urging me to get. I could maybe live with a lil claustrophobia if’n the interior of El Casa Móvil De Pennington stays (relatively) cool. My AC labors on 95+ degree days as it is, even with the awning in place. I shudder to think what 104 is gonna be like… if I have to keep my awning up. Gad.

Do I panic now? Or later?

  1. Have you tried the tie downs on the awning? They attach to each end of the roller and then hammer stakes into the ground. Also an antiflapper thingie that attaches to the sides and helps keep the canvas from flapping too much. They sell both at Hughes Trailer (467 and Hwy 70) or at Bison's up in Clovis.

I call this weather like a blowdryer in your face. Seems like we went from cold weather, to windy, to HOT. What happened to a nice mild late spring?

  2. The flapping was the demise of my old awning, even with the anti-flapping clamps in place (The old awning tore off the RV at the roof...). I still have the de-flappers and use 'em, too. I never saw the need for the awning tie-downs, tho, in that I never noticed any up/down motion of the awning.

Thanks for the suggestions, Jenny. And yeah, you're right...I think we went from winter ===> windy ===> HOT. Or perhaps that would be hot AND windy. Whatever. It sucks.

  3. Well as usual in west central Ohio, we go from the crap to the oven, no real spring to speak of.....90 and humid with some storms by Thursday....just in time for the niece's long version Catholic wedding next Saturday....already decided to wear summer clothing, no suit and tie...to damn old to get dressed up for anything less than my own funeral.

  4. Buck that's just too hot for humans! It's like being baked from the inside out! No words of wisdom to offer you re: the awning... sorry!

  5. You may cook in your can. We lived in a mobile home while we were building our house they are hard to keep cool. The wind has blown here since march, I'm tired of wind also, but when it stops it's going to be HOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  6. 104? That sucks. I'm in OK and we will be there soon enough, I guess. I will be sending all the cool thoughts I can muster your way.

I hear ya on that, Pat. I kept two suits when I finally, really, really, retired and gave the rest away. I kept one light gray and one dark blue, for exactly the reasons you mentioned: weddings and funerals.

You're oh-SO-right about that, FF! I've always wondered how our forefathers made it without air conditioning... especially in places like N'Awlins, Houston, etc. But at least today's forecast has been revised down three degrees (to 101). Thank God for small (VERY small) favors!

I hear ya, Diva, on all counts. I, too, am TIRED of this infernal wind! We get some heat here, but these 100-degree days are fairly rare. Thank God!

I remember summers in OKC all too well, Amy. I had just returned from three years in England when we moved to OKC in July. The weather was a SHOCK... after three years of nothing higher than 80 degrees, and the Brits thought that was "sweltering." Heh.

Your cool thoughts are MUCH appreciated!

    PANIC NOW.

  9. I'm sorry Buck! Just be thankful your AC does not have to brave an Okie summer! A Portales summers sounds bad enough.

  10. Sounds like time to sit in one of those plastic little kiddie pools with a cold one.

LOL! Panic can be useful. I draped towels all over the windows and that appears to have helped. It's 100 degrees out as I write, and the AC isn't running constantly... and that's a Good Thing, as Martha sez.

I hear ya on that one. My summers in OKC weren't a whole helluva lot of fun... being as how they came in second in The Miserable Summer Weather derby, exceeded only by Biloxi, Mississippi. Now there's a place with some truly MISERABLE summer WX. Just like N'Awlins... without the charm.

Dang!! That's a GREAT idea! I have yet to pour that first Cold One after my Adventures in Modern Dentistry... but soon!

  12. It is odd that Portales is hotter than OK right now. I figure it will change soon enough. The Diva is complaining about the heat already, but I think it has been a pretty mild spring. I always like the transition times - from cold to hot and from hot to cold. Once it gets really hot or really cold, I don't like it so much. The wind I can live without.

  13. In ROC we have had a lovely cool spring, but in typical fashion it goes suddenly from pleasant to hot. Supposed to be in the 90's on Friday. Guess I should finish spring cleaning my room before that.

Agreed. We set a record yesterday: 104... according to Channel 4 out of ABQ. The old record was 101, and the WX Channel sez we only (ahem) got to 102. And the freakin' wind was fierce, too!

Yesterday was one of those days where I miss the NE... although it can and does get hot up your way, too, as noted. I'll say it yet again, tho: I absolutely, positively do NOT miss the snow!! ;-)

Just be polite... that's all I ask.
