Happy (Early) Fathers Day!

This my Fathers Day gift… from me, to me:
I just now finished placing my order with Amazon for this lil puppy and a few other items, besides. It’s a Canon XTi digital SLR (body only)…in silver. I prefer black and would have ordered one in black, but the silver body was $80.00 cheaper. That fact alone appeals to my inner tightwad frugal being. So, silver it is. I decided on this particular Canon camera and lens combo after much gnashing and thrashing through various digital camera sites and such, in addition to having followed Becky’s experience with her Canon XT, which she really likes. I’ve lived with my Powershot G5 for four years and really, really like it. But I’ve been lusting for a digital SLR for a couple of years and I guess it's time to take the plunge. So, plunge taken... time or not.

As for the lens… I bought a Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS (the “IS” meaning image stabilization). Nearly all of the digicam sites took issue with the standard kit lens which was bashed for build quality, among other things. This particular lens got good reviews and isn’t “break the bank” expensive. It remains to be seen just how much I like it, but I’m pretty sure I will. Like it, that is.

Wow. Excitement ‘R’ Us!!

  1. I've had that camera for just over a year with the kit lens. Really enjoy the camera and the pictures it makes. Your only downside to the 28-135 is that it's a bit long for some uses, ymmv...good luck and hope to see your pictures soon.

  2. You're gonna love the SLR! The lack of shutter lag after a point and shoot is amazing. That lens sounds like a pretty good one. I have a 28-80 and a 55-200, both are great.

Are you planning a road trip somewhere to try out the new camera, or just around P-ville?

  3. Thanks for the comment, PogoTex. I really like Canon's stuff and I expect to like the XTi... it's good to hear you like yours. And thanks, too, for dropping by.

No road trip planned at the moment, Jenny. I've told people that this year will be the "year of living frugally" (shorthand for "I'm not going anywhere") due to the expense of my dental work, which is ALL out of pocket... MY pocket.

And then I go and drop a substantial amount of money on a new toy. But, like they say... "consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds." I'm nothing if not inconsistent! ;-)

  4. Congrats on the new camera! I know you're gonna love it. That's based on how I feel about mine. I have the kit lens that came with mine and haven't had any quality issues with it. I found it to be a good all around lens to start with. Still, the one you got sounds like a good lens as well.

I'm excited, too. I can't wait to see your pictures!

  8. Well, if you couldn't bring yourself to splurge on a pair of those Wings/Stanley Cup shoes, I guess this will be almost as exciting.
You're going to have serious fun (and great pics) with that outfit!

  10. New camera, er, toy. Always fun. Speaking as a semi-pro photographer - I'm jealous!!! Even though I have a rockin' set of gear, I'm always enamored of the newest and latest. Sadly I can no longer get fun stuff for my camera - it's a Minolta and they are out of business for the digital SLR that I have. Someday I'll be faced with replacing my gear - an daunting prospect as I have 4 lenses alone, not to mention the pro's camera body.

Digital SLR - you are gonna have a BLAST! Happy Father's Day to Buck!!!

  11. Ooh! Aahh! Nice camera! I'm glad you did not buy the red tennies for Father's Day - that would have been a bit odd.

I hope you have better luck finding someone to take your first photos of - Jesse had to make do with me :)

  13. Kris: Dealing with obsolescence ain't easy or fun. It's sad when a company who's products you love goes out of business. But, I hear ya.

Lou sez: I hope you have better luck finding someone to take your first photos of - Jesse had to make do with me :)

Well, the first pic might be a self-portrait. That was my first pic with my G5. And Jess could have done much worse than you, ya know! I think you're very photogenic.

Amy sez: Boy-howdy, that is a nice Father's Day present. You must be a great dad.

Well, yeah...on your first. As for the second... it depends on who you ask! ;-)
