On
Together we set out to capture the essence of music at the most fundamental level. We ended up assembling literally hundreds of musical attributes or "genes" into a very large Music Genome. Taken together these genes capture the unique and magical musical identity of a song - everything from melody, harmony and rhythm, to instrumentation, orchestration, arrangement, lyrics, and of course the rich world of singing and vocal harmony. It's not about what a band looks like, or what genre they supposedly belong to, or about who buys their records - it's about what each individual song sounds like.
Since we started back in 2000, we've carefully listened to the songs of tens of thousands of different artists - ranging from popular to obscure - and analyzed the musical qualities of each song one attribute at a time. This work continues each and every day as we endeavor to include all the great new stuff coming out of studios, clubs and garages around the world.
It has been quite an adventure, you could say a little crazy - but now that we've created this extraordinary collection of music analysis, we think we can help be your guide as you explore your favorite parts of the music universe.

The Music Genome Project
“OK,” sez you, “That’s interesting. But what GOOD is it?” The Good, Gentle Reader: Pandora, Radio from The Music Genome Project. The link takes you to a search box, where you can type in the name of a song, an artist (a band or solo artist), a station, or Listener Profiles…if you want to find folks who like the same sorts of stuff you do. Once you type something in the box Pandora returns suggestions, including “stations” that features artists and music that “match” the style of the artist you entered. Here are a couple of screen shots:
I’m listening to variations on a Roxy Music theme this morning, after listening to the Stones for about three hours last evening. And the music selections are waay-cool as well as being spot-on, Gentle Reader. Eerie, even. This approach to music analysis works! One of the better things, IM(NS)HO, is the fact I haven’t heard one single track I would place in the over-played, beat-to-death category. It’s all good, so far.
The service is free, but you have to create an account to continue listening after the first five or six songs have played. I now have an account, and Radio Paradise has some serious competition in the Inter-tube Radio department.

The idiot(on the John Cole blog) doesn't have a clue...Che' was a violent murdering Red....the US policy against Cuba is not an issue(I'd like few Cuba smokes myself)....the We Love Che' crowd, are basically We Hate the US crowd...and Obama is sleeping with the enemy(or courting them).
ReplyDeleteToday has been an odd day with no time to try the music link, but it sounds great. The video was interesting - makes me wonder whats up with that. My mother insists that Obama is Muslim, which makes me laugh. Now he has other problems. Maybe you could photoshop Obama in the Zen garden and confuse the heck out of everyone.
ReplyDeleteThe Hubby and I love Pandora radio. It's fascinating and never disappoints us. We've defined a few "stations" and they consistently play new music each time we go to the site, based on our previous selections. Very cool stuff.

Lou: Your Mom is part of a big crowd (Obama = muslim). But big ain't necessarily good, especially in this case. Show her the Wiki article on Obama... that might help.
Kris: After listening to nothing but Pandora for the last 36 hours or so, I agree... it's "very cool stuff," indeed. I've exercised the "thumbs down" option very few times... mostly on whiny singers (like Morrissey and that jerk from Counting Crows). But it sure is NICE to have that option, eh?
Ashley: Pandora doesn't work on dial-up, unfortunately. Their stream is 128 Kbps...
