The Usual Short Post...

…on this Championship Saturday. One of the best rivalries in ALL of sports just kicked off: Army-Navy. I don’t have a dog in this fight, so I’m agnostic. But I DO love the game…and there are many more great games on tap today. The last football Saturday of the season looks to be a great one!

A sad note: Evel Knieval died last night; obituary here. Love him or hate him, he was a larger-than-life character on the American stage and did wonderful things for the sport of motorcycling. And just might have originated the phrase “Don’t try this at home, kids.”

RIP, Evel.

  1. When I was a kid I read a bio on Evel Knieval, and was always a fan. One thing that has stuck in my mind was how he got his name. I found it again on Wiki: Knievel was taken to jail on a charge of reckless driving. When the night jailer came around to check the roll, he noted Robert Knievel in one cell and William Knofel in the other. Knofel was well known as "Awful Knofel" ("Awful" rhyming with "Knofel") so Knievel began to be referred to as Evel Knievel.

  2. Okay, my dog (Kansas)(wait! That doesn't sound right!) is out of the hunt, and now I get to relax (no pressure) and watch Missouri and Oklahoma tonight. I CANNOT bring myself to cheer for Missouri (as my daughter says "OH HELL NO") ... so I guess for three hours out of my lifetime I will be a Sooner fan. :D Got my red on.

bag blog! I love the Evel Knievel story....had never heard it before.

  3. I remember Evil Knieval well. My brother had an Evil K. toy. I had the feminine version called Deary Darring. She and her motorcycle were pink.

OH, and GO NAVY BEAT ARMY!!!

  4. So far Oregon-Oregon State has been the best game of the day, with LSU-Tenn running a close second.

Watching the Big 12 game now...I tend to agree with what SJS said over at my place on this one: "Why can't they both lose?"

Which is what I had to say about Army-Navy, although I did pick a side, albeit very weakly.

  7. Thanks for that Evel story, Lou. I'd never heard it either.

Towanda: You got your wish! As did all those OSU fans...Ohio State, not Oklahoma/Oregon/whatever State...

You, too, Becky! But nothing (other than pride) was at stake in Army-Navy, eh? IIRC, my kids had Evel Knieval toys, as well. Could be wrong on that, tho, as I thought he was a freak back in the day, and not a "real" biker...

Jeny...we watched the game together, eh?

Mike: Was the Oregon game on ESPN? I watched a little of Pitt - WVA before switching over to the OK game...and from the looks of things this morning (and on SportsCenter last night) you're right. And speaking of OK-Mizzou...you and SJS are OH-so-right!

But...what a finale to THE best season of college ball I've ever seen! It'll be interesting to see who plays for that mythical National Championship. OSU, fer sure. But the opponent? Probably LSU. But there are a lot of 10-2 teams to choose from... ;-)

The LSU game was the best I saw yesterday.

  8. I think Oregon-Oregon State was on ESPN2. I know for sure it was on one of the basic three ESPN stations (ESPN, ESPN2, and ESPN Classic).

It's really too bad that tOSU gets another chance to be spanked by a clearly superior SEC team. And I say that as someone whose hatred of the SEC is almost as strong as his hatred of the Big 10/11, aka the conference that doesn't know how to count.

  9. Ohio State has LSU right where they want them....Bucks are a 4 1/2 point dog....and that is good.

Believe it or not Buck, I'm rooting for Michigan against Florida....I grew up a Gator fan, but have grown to despise the Florida teams and the SEC.....can't imagine why?

    Go Bucks....Go Blue!

Just be polite... that's all I ask.
