Wounded

Some days it just doesn't pay to get out of bed. I am SO frickin' pissed I can't stand it. Seven years without an incident/accident and then this happens. And it was stupidity, of course.

I was on my way out of Beautiful La Hacienda Trailer Park and I pull up behind this big-ass Dodge pickup sitting at the stop sign, waiting to pull out on to highway 70. And then...inexplicably, the truck's back-up lights come on and the driver proceeds to back-up, oblivious to me and my blaring horn. Crunch.

We both get out of our vehicles and the woman sez "Oh, I'm SO sorry! I didn't see you!" Well, thinks I..."If you would have looked, you just might have seen me." I simply answered "And I suppose you didn't hear my horn, either?" The reply: "Oh, I did, but by then it was too late." Her brake lights didn't come on until after she hit me. What's worse? Her husband was in the passenger seat and neither one of 'em so much as looked over their shoulders.

Frickin' idjits.

The worst part? I'll have to take the car to Lubbock, Amarillo, or Roswell to get it fixed. I'm not trusting my baby to just any body shop...she's going to the dealer. But I've yet to even begin this process and the police report won't be available until Thursday, at the earliest, according to the kind officer who did the on-scene work.

Dang.

  1. What a bunch of idiots! Hope everything gets fixed soon. Will the dealership give you a loaner?

  2. Well, I just got off the phone with my insurance company and the loaner answer is "yes." Just what sort of loaner I'll be getting is unknown at the moment, but an adjuster is supposed to be calling me within the hour.

And I've changed my mind about the dealer... I'm gonna get it fixed in at Rembrandt's Body in Clovis. What changed my mind is Progressive's claim that ALL repairs are guaranteed for the life of the car...as long as I own it, in other words. It's probably better to drive her over to Clovis instead of Lubbock or Amarillo, seeing as how the hood won't latch completely.

    Sigh.

  3. I smiled when I saw your front bumper. I guess they are bumpers anymore. They are more like body panels. My wife backed out of our driveway and just barely touched a black sportscar parked across the street. She didn't see it. That kiss didn't even scratch the paint on the black car but put a dent in the bumper because it hit where the metal ends and the plastic begins. The result was a trip to the dealer and in the end $1,000 to replace the bumper.

I also came to thank you for visiting my Japanese blog. Sendai-shi. I answered your comment there about the bathrooms.

    Thanks again for stopping by.

And good luck on getting the bumper fixed. It is a real pain that these things happen.

  4. I feel for ya. Some mishaps are unavoidable.

Can't remember if I shared my own tale of woe with you, it happened this past spring. Kind of spooky this angle is exactly the same as yours.

This one was about $2k with replacement radiator bracket, hood latch, labor, paint. Her insurance company totalled my car out. Imagine the nerve. Just 330k miles and eighteen years, and a piddly two thou worth of damage is a total. What a bunch of airheads.

By the way, not that it's likely to apply in your case but a total COMPLETELY changes the terms of the loaner, regardless of what you might have been promised.

  6. My Lincoln dealer does not have a body shop. They send the work out. My B&F guy is a restoration place, does frame work etc. Same hourly rate as the other shops. There's not a lot of "Bondo" shops left so I wouldn't worry too much about that. Most shops replace the sheet metal rather than fix it because of the man-hours involved. Breaks your heart though don't it.

  7. Ah, Buck, I hurt for you. My friend, Janice, Lindsay's mom, just totalled her little Toyota when pick up pulled out in front of her. He drove off with minor damage, while her car was towed. The jerk turned out to be a lawyer who tried to say it was her fault. Hmm, I could have switched "jerk" and "lawyer" and it would have been the same sentence.

  8. So sorry about the hornet. I don't have a lot of experience being in wrecks so I can't really comment. Other than to offer my condolences, that is.

  9. Buck, that's a genuine bummer - my sympathies!

  10. *UGH*
    That sucks, Buck.
And you nailed it ... the woman (and her husband) were frickin' idjits.

  11. Ouch...
Have been rear-ended twice by women drivers, totaling both cars in each instance (last time was hit at 55 mph while I was stopped for a wreck up ahead...). I feel your pain...

  12. Abe: Yeah, "bumpers" are a thing of the past on most cars, but not trucks, LOL! That woman's pickup wasn't even scratched, either. I have a feeling this lil incident is gonna cost a bit more than $1K...

Morgan: I hadn't thought about the possibility of a total -- but now that you mention it, the Green Hornet IS seven years old. The trade-in book value is only $10,755. One would think that's "repairable," but...

Dan: After I calmed down a bit I realized exactly what you wrote: most dealers farm that stuff out, anyway. And the body shop I'm taking her to has a good rep, according to a couple of Clovisites I know.

Lou: LOL about the Lawyer and jerk thingie, with all due respect to Craig...

Thanks, Becky, Lin, Cynthia, Towanda and SJS! Believe it or not, sympathy helps!! I'm semi-amazed this morning, reading the comments that came in over night.

  13. Buck, I don't think you have anything to seriously worry about re the total. The new hood plus paint should be the bulk of what's needed, parts & labor.

I wrapped ol' Bessie around a tree when she was seven years old, caused $2800 worth of damage. That came close to a total but didn't become one, and she had over 200k at the time.

Just for your peace of mind. A total, when it isn't even your fault, is a huge pain in the arse. They thumb their noses at you about the rental car and charge you a premium rate if you don't turn it in. Then things go downhill from there.

  14. Oh Buck I'm so sorry I know how much see means to you.. Hopefully she will be as good as new. Hope you get a decent rental...

  15. Bummer, for sure. 2 weeks before our recent vacation, The Hubby backed my baby out of the garage and smacked right into his own baby - parked in the driveway. $650 in repairs and you can't tell it was ever damaged.

Good luck!!! They can do wondrous things these days.

  16. Ouch! Poor you. I hate loaners too, but not as much as taking the bus. Hope it all gets fixed up soon. (Nice car.)

Just be polite... that's all I ask.
