Another Placeholder

Another one of those sleep-in kind of days. I’ve just poured my second cup, answered the overnight mail (always dangerous when one isn’t fully caffeinated yet) and am almost prepared to see what’s in the news. Almost. More J-F(rickin’)-Kerry, probably. Arrgh.

Today’s Pic: Apropos of nothing—it’s not raining, I’m not in California (Thank GOD!), and the current view out my window is nothing like this. However. I must have taken this picture for a reason although that reason escapes me now. Outside the window of my apartment in Berkeley, CA, two streets south of the corner of Telegraph and Ashby Avenues. A rainy Sunday in February, 2001.

  1. Did you ever go to a Pizza place (I think it was called Mama's?) just off Telegraph, near the parking garage at Telegraph and University Blvd?

It has been about 20 years, but I remember great pizzas and cheap beer.

I will be in Oakland, this Wednesday. Will go up there to see if the old place is still there. Then, off to Heinholds First and Last Chance, Jack London Square. Great to lean on a Bar that London himeslf, used to lean on! The old and wornout brass foot rail makes me think of the hundred years that has passed. There is a clock, stopped at 5:26 (or near that time) which was broken during the 1906 quake. Who really cares what time it is, when you are in a landmark like that bar.

You can tell that I am looking forward to my visit!

    Keep up the great writing!

Agreed, dc, in spades. One of my absolute favorite past-times is seeking out old historic bars and having a couple while thinking about those that preceded me in that very same place. I don't think I blogged specifically about it, but the bar in the Menger Hotel was where Teddy Roosevelt recruited the greatest number of his Rough Riders prior to embarking for Cuba during the Spanish-American war. Lots of old photos and memorabilia in that bar, and lots of history. That always enhances the imbibing! :-)

I never went to Mama's, btw. Missed that one! Have fun in Oakland and have one for me!

  3. Buck - I know where this is! :)

I spent quite a few "short-cut" trips through all those streets when I-80 was a mess! Zipped past Alta Bates often as well ... OK, not really zipped by, but it was faster than using HWY 80!!!

    (i'm sure you remember!)

My, how time does fly...and erases memories as it goes flying by, too. I had to google "alta bates," coz for the life of me I simply could not remember what the Hell that was/is. And now I remember (thank you, google). Just across Telegraph and up the street, sorta kitty corner from my apartment. I lived three doors down from the corner of Telegraph and Prince Street, Steve. And as noted, two streets south of Ashby.

All that time we were SO close, and you never dropped in for a cup of coffee!

    :-)
