Time keeps on ticking...

Benjamin Franklin was a wise man... he said many profound things; a few examples below

"In this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes."

"In wine there is wisdom, in beer there is freedom, in water there is bacteria."

"Some people die at 25 and aren't buried until 75."

"Dost thou love life?  Then do not squander time, for that's the stuff life is made of." (my favorite!)

"Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us  to be happy." (possibly my father's favorite... despite being somewhat agnostic about religion)

Time is said to heal all wounds... but after a year without my father, I can't imagine ever being well again, not like before.  I spent some time today reading blogs my father visited... and I found some peace in the posts I read; I always worried my father was alone in Portales. But today I realized he had so many wonderful friends that he shared his passion for life with... you all (if you're reading this... you are VERY likely in the group I'm referring to) brought joy and purpose to my father's life. For that, I'm truly and immeasurably thankful.

I added a couple of pics of my Dad with a couple of his favorite motorcycles... or rather mo'sickles.

My brother and I intended to keep the blog going... and more quotes come to mind; the road to hell among the first.  My mother (TFMP) would often say, (when my brother or I asked where she was going) "To hell if I don't change my ways!"  So I am making a resolution to change my ways and begin posting here... I know I can't compare to my father's writing, so I won't even try to do that... my commitment will be to re-post favorite posts of his and to write about things that remind me of him or reflect his colorful personality.

I hope you are all well, warm and enjoyed my brief post... I promise there will be more to come.  In the meantime, have a Merry Christmas and a safe and happy New Year!

  2. I spent a lot of time yesterday thinking about your Dad, he was a true friend. He is missed but I know we'll get to see him again someday, no doubt he'll expect us to buy. Which I will, gladly.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you Commander Sam, LtCol Buck (I presume) and your families.

Damn good to see pictures of Buck and his mo'sickles.

  3. I can understand your feelings.
When you're "that close" and lose someone life is different.
Your dad was one of the best friends I never met.
It helps to talk and remember they are still a part of your life even though they aren't present.
The best to you and yours this holiday season ...oh hell, Merry Christmas!!!

  4. Thanks for the post. I miss "talking" with your Dad by blog and think of him often. HMS Defiant and I hoped to meetup with him when we drove through the west last year, but alas, we just missed him.
Merry Christmas to you and your family.

  5. Tough year for the Pennington family, and an empty one for us fans of Exile in Portals. (your Dad!) Barco Sin Vela did another lap around Florida in November, we also visited Austria and Czech Republic via air. I drank an unknown amount of Plzen beer and remembered Buck fondly, while sitting in a Czech pub.

Please to keep updating us when you can, and lets meet up and chat!

    1. DC, I would very much like to meet up and chat. My Mrs. Pennington (MMP) and are planning a getaway in the Spring to Florida for a week, we'll be transiting through JAX... maybe we could have lunch. I will keep in touch.
Thanks for the videos... they are amazing!

  7. We also acquired another sailboat called "Nu-Gnu". Here is a vid from May in which we raced for 40 miles on the St Johns River.

  8. Imagine my joy when I saw that there was something new up at the Exile in Portales! I'm sure the anniversary is poignant. . .

    And that one about the beer. . . I like it. . . ;)

  9. Always enjoyed reading your Dad's thoughts on the world. We old vets are growing fewer and fewer, and there is a strong thread of common sense in those who thwarted the Warsaw Pact. He was a credit to the uniform and a wonderful reminder of a simpler time and place. I look forward to seeing more of his old photos and hearing your stories about him.

  10. So glad to see a new post! Have thought often of Buck this year. Would have liked the chance to tell him about our mo'sickle travels in the sidecar. The offer still stands to give
everyone a ride if you boys ever get back out to Portales and the TX panhandle area.
