Dumb Stuff We Hear On NPR

There's a LOT that might could fall in that category; this is just the latest:
And what that means is that 1 in 3 adults drinks excessively.

What counts as excessive? Less than you might think.

Women who consume eight or more drinks per week are considered excessive drinkers. And for men, excess is defined as 15 or more drinks a week. (The researchers defined a drink as just 5 ounces of wine, 12 ounces of beer or 1.5 ounces of spirits.)
Well, now.  It appears that I drink excessively, what with two beers every afternoon and a couple o' single malts or bourbons... on rare occasions more than two... after dinner.  This adds up to a grand total of about 28 drinks a week on average, nearly twice what the quoted study defines as excessive.  I'm not gonna worry my semi-pretty lil head about this, however.  According to my doctor I'm as healthy as the proverbial horse... aside from the fact I can't breathe, which has nothing to do with alcohol.  I trust my doctor one whole helluva lot more than I trust these so-called studies.

    1. There's a lot to like about NPR, Pat, if only from an "opposition research" perspective. I really like NPR, unlike a lot o' folks on the right.

  3. I have a nasty feeling that my drinking would be excessive, too, but I can't figure out how much 5 ounces of wine is.

    1. I've found out. One glass (1/6 bottle = 12.5 cl) is 4.22 US fl oz. So yes, I am drinking to excess. Tough!

  5. Well, lets see. The "excessive" tag would apply to 90% of all fighter pilots post WW II ( perversely it only applied to bomber crews in WW II as they had several days between missions, while fighter pilots flew so often--often on a minutes notice--that getting "in the bag" wasn't practically possible) And of course to every seaman who ever made a liberty port. Who else in the civilian world? I guess we could start with college fraternity members, house-painters and attnys, but listing all professions/trades would be an all-day affair, lol.

It USED to be that way; I'm not so sure about today. Life just ain't as much fun since the AF began that gotdamned "de-glamorization of alcohol" BS. Back in our day(s) you were an odd duck if you didn't hit the club after work, these days you're weird if you DO. I base that on first hand observations with the Club at Cannon.

@ Glenn: Yeah, you Squids are pretty good people. ;-)

  6. I really can't fault NPR for the information provided.
They are only repeating what others have been telling us.
It's irrelevant in my case anyway.
    I definitely drank to excess.
Sadly, much of the time I actually enjoyed it, even if others didn't.

    1. Fault NPR on the information? I can, based on what information they CHOOSE to report, considering all the things that are out there. On your other track... the Ol' Man used to say... often... "Never trust anyone who doesn't drink." I've since come to realize that some folks have very valid reasons for not imbibing.

  8. I don't need too much encouragement to continue my "excessive" drinking, but this post sure helps.
