Today's Happy Hour Soundtrack

Lyle, singin' a John Prine tune...

I rode across the great high plain
Under the scorchin' sun and thru the drivin' rain
An' when I set my sights on the mountains high
I bid my former life goodbye.

An' so thank you ma'am, I must decline
For it's on my steed I will rely
An' I've learned to need the open sky
I'm subject to the natural forces
Home is where my horse is.

[...]

Now as I sit here safe at home
With a cold Coors Lite an' the TV on
All the sacrifice and the death and war
Lord I pray that I'm worth fighting for

An' so thank you ma'am, I must decline
For it's on my RPG I ride
Till Earth an' hell are satisfied
I'm subject to the natural forces
Sometimes at night I hear their voices
Home is where my horse is.
Home is where my horse is.
That resonates, except for the Coors Lite bit.  We don't drink that swill nor do we have a flesh 'n' blood horse, but I DO have a steely steed and a fridge full o' good beer, which just might be better things.  And we are most certainly subject to those natural forces.  I do love me this tune, anyhoo.

  1. I was introduced to Prine via Nanci Griffith. I bought all her CD's until 1994, when I felt she stepped away from the microphone, and I needed her loud voice. Anyway, the song is available as I heard it at:

"You've broken the speed of the sound of loneliness..." I have to admit never getting on that rocket! I haven't heard it for a couple of years, so thanks for your song. "I pray that I am worth fighting for" as well.

    1. I'm familiar with the song, Christiane, but I never heard that particular duet with Ms. Griffith. And I thank you for that!

Speaking of Prine duets... Here he is with Bonnie Raitt. "Angel From Montgomery" is just heartrendingly beautiful.

  2. What's not to love about Lyle Lovett? His style is so unique and so mesmerizing. Thank you for that Buck.

    1. Lyle is one of only about three artists whose work I'll buy without ever hearing a single track on the album. I cannot think of a single song of his I DON'T like.

Just be polite... that's all I ask.
