We... the collective we, all of us... lost a good man two years ago today. It's hard, nay, impossible to adequately describe the impact Carroll "Lex" LeFon's death had on the milblogging community and beyond. But let me try:
Linkage
I can't break the habit, like so many others who read Lex every day. So I still go there even though I know I won't find any more o' the Good Captain's tales o' derring-do, his astute opinions, or his potent dry wit to begin my day. It's just a habit...
But I found something of value there today, as I did every day for the past eight years or so. This, from commenter yaJames:Have you seen this morning’s Sacramento Bee article? http://www.sacbee.com/2012/03/12/4330119/atac-mourns-the-loss-of-capt-carroll.html (Ed: the link is no more, unfortunately)
The article quotes the CEO of ATAC about the accident, and about tributes to Lex. It’s the first time I’ve seen the funeral arrangements published. (March 27th in San Diego.)
It also links to http://www.atacusa.com. They’ve turned their web-site into a memorial page. (This link is no good, too)So I went to ATAC and the memorial page they've posted is truly a work of art. At the very bottom of the page you'll find this:
The man was loved.
Loved, indeed. We miss him.
It still hurts...
ReplyDeleteCan't believe it's been that long.
ReplyDeleteI sure do miss him. Godspeed, Sir.
ReplyDelete2 years on.....still hurts.
ReplyDeleteHe was a good man. I liked him.
ReplyDeleteNot the best day today.............................
ReplyDeleteI was hors de combat yesterday, but scarcely a day goes by..
ReplyDeleteAnd, as you've underlined before, Buck, the unique combination of his talents and the quality of the assembled commentariat he attracted will, I think I can safely say without fear of contradiction, likely never be seen again however old or young we are..
I miss the commentariat, too.
Delete2 years - just so hard to believe. And when I feel my own sorrow settling in again, my thoughts turn to his family and I know that my sorrow pales in comparison to their loss. We do our best for them to continue to honor their father and husband and brother. Lex - gave us so much in life and even in death; he created a community that endures. THAT is a fitting tribute to one of the finest men I'll ever know.
ReplyDeleteThank you all for your kind thoughts. As most of you noted: not a day goes by that I don't miss the man.
