Madeleine Peyroux singin' a live version of one of my favorite Warren Zevon songs...
That's an interesting take on the song. I particularly love the string ensemble on this version, so very apropos for a song that still tears at my heart. Here's Warren doin' a live version of the song:
Is that not just frickin' BEAUTIFUL? We sure do miss ya, Warren. A LOT.

I wonder sometimes if the instruments we enjoy hearing has to do with our own vocals ranges, or what we would like our vocal range to be...
ReplyDeleteThere is just something about the cello that just always grabs me. Being a bass/baritone and having picked and played the cello in my much younger years, I always seem to sit up and listen a litte more attentively when I hear a cello being played...
Anywho... I enjoyed both versions of this. Thanks for sharing Buck!
It would be a blast to get to sample many fine glasses of single malt while listening to your music collect. You have really refined taste in music, even if it spans a lot of time and styles. I tend to be that way too.
Cheers! I'm having my third B&B to get me in the mood to dream....
That's an interesting thought about instruments vs. vocal range, Jim. I suppose if I was FORCED to choose a favorite instrument it would be the acoustic guitar, of the 12-string variety. I don't think my choice would have any thing to do with my vocal range (non-existent, actually; I CANNOT sing)... I just like the instrument. Then again, I can't think of an instrument I DON'T like, the accordion would come closest but still doesn't get a cigar.
DeleteI'd like to knock back a few with you, too, Jim. That would be great good fun! Thanks for the kind words, as well. It's not often I've had the "refined" adjective used in conjunction with my name. ;-)
Oh, what the helll... here is my version of Hurt... one of the last songs Johnny Cash did. My version is all me, including the vocals.... you can hear I do them a bit lower than Cash's version, but it give you the eyedeer of where I'm thinking about the instrument of choice having a tie to the voice.

A fine version that is, too. I can only WISH I had a similar talent.
DeleteI really hesitate to put up any of my own vocals, it just doesn't compare with what my friend does. I do appreciate the complement though.
DeleteIf I'm ever around your way, be sure that I would stop by... and bring a bottle or two for us to swig from. ;)
Buck, thanks for this and for introducing me to Zevon. I'm ashamed to admit I'd never heard of the guy. I always liked Carmelita though, just never bothered to look into who wrote it. I looked him up on Wiki and noticed that he crossed paths with many, many artists (the Everly Bros., Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt, etc.) and one of his songs was even in the movie Midnight Cowboy. And you're so right, this is a beautiful song. Thanks again.
ReplyDeleteIf ya wanna buy an album of his, Dan, I recommend his self-titled album to begin with. (I could be high-zoot and say "his eponymous album," but I won't. Heh.) Yeah, he has a "greatest hits" or two collections out there, but this album is his masterpiece, IM(NS)HO. As a matter o' fact I'm gonna buy the digitally remastered CD myself. Today.
DeleteTrivia for ya: I got into Zevon as a result of Linda Ronstadt's 1977 cover of "Poor, Poor Pitiful Me" (I bought her "Simple Dreams" album) when she just GUSHED over WZ in a Rolling Stone interview. That was about the time WZ released his second album, which I bought first, followed closely by the self-titled effort. He really was magnificent.
