Remembering Janis...
The preeminent blues shouter of my generation died on this date in 1970, at the tender age of 27. Ohmigawd but she has been missed. I can't really think of anyone who picked up the mantle that fell from her shoulders.
RIP, Janis. We remember you fondly.

Funny, she really didn't have a great voice, but boy, her songs could cut to the heart. It amazes me how some people can sing fairly lousy, in tone or even pitch (like Dylan) yet they have you coming back for more. There is some quality that just tugs ya.
ReplyDeleteI hear what you say about the technical quality of some artists' voices. Janis really did if for me, though, Dylan does too, and Neil Young's another who falls in this group.
DeleteJanis did for me too. Though I find if I listen to her too often I have to take a break for a while. Neil Young is another, though he has a better quality voice than the other two.
DeleteDylan is good on some songs, but there are others I just can't listen to, just because of his voice.
On a different note... heh... Here is a recording I did with my daughter. My friend thought this too girly a song, even with Springsteen's lyrics, so I forced my daughter to sing it for me. I did the instrumentals and mixing... as usual. I played a bit with the piano part moving it side to side to give it a variety and have some fun in learning new tricks! (Who says you can't teach an Old Goat new tricks. )

Your daughter has a good voice, Jim. "Because the Night" is one of the few Springsteen songs I like.
DeleteI wasn't much of a Springsteen fan either, though he does put on a hell of a show.
DeleteThanks for the compliment (on behalf of my daughter). I'll make sure to pass it along. And she had a cold when she sang that song... though I think it might have added a little something to the song.
She had soul.
ReplyDeleteThat she did.
DeleteShe really ripped on Me and Bobby McGee. And I think of her every time I see a Mercedes Benz. Which is a lot.
ReplyDeleteI remember when "Mercedes Benz" came out... you couldn't move ten feet in yer car without hearing it on the radio. And now that you mentioned this, well...
DeleteI used to watch "Dialing for Dollars" on cable TV (we had 8 channels if I remember right. Anyway, I recognized the lyrics "Dialing for Dollars is trying to find me." right away :-)
ReplyDeleteThe suits never called my number either...
