Oh, This Is PRICELESS!

From Grantland...

Couldn't have happened to a better buncha people (as noted elsewhere: I hate actively dislike the Leafs and their fans).  The hat-tip goes to Sean McIndoe, whose piece on the 20 types of depressed sports fans is also priceless. You should definitely read this, coz if'n you're a sports fan you'll find yourself there.  Me? I'm a Number Two. Definitely a Number Two.

  1. The article made me realize that I say "what are you doing" more than I probably should. I'm kind of that (#11) and #16. I turn it off and leave, preferably JUST before the final whistle or buzzer. That way I don't have to acknowledge that it happened.

Heh. We've DEFINTELY been there and done that. From a post back in April...

Yesterday's game was an early one and I set my alarm for 1030 hrs to be sure I didn't miss anything. I got up, opened the blinds, turned on the teevee, and put the coffee on. Well, the score was 3-0 before the freakin' coffee pot had finished doin' its thing and it's a great good thing you weren't in the immediate vicinity, Gentle Reader, coz the combination of lack o' sleep, ZERO caffeination, and piss-poor play made Buck a VERY surly and foul-mouthed boy. I turned the game off four minutes into the second when the 'Hawks went up by 5-0. There are some things in life I just don't wanna see.

      So: I hear ya. ;-)

  2. LOL. I'm a combo of #1 & #17. Circa 1974/75 (memory fades) I totally disgusted my new bride (married 73) by punching a hole in the wall of our Camp St apt after an LSU loss at home to hated Alabama when we 1) out-played them, 2) had better personnel, but 3) got out-coached. I was a BITTER man...

PS: Could copious amounts of Barbancourt have had anything to do with it? :)

    1. PS: Ever since my little "display" my loving bride has largely refused to watch sports events with me. I watched both the 1980 & 86 Louisville Nat. NCAA BB Championships alone in our 2nd floor Den in our Louisville home and the recent Louisville win this year alone as well. Same for all but one of the LSU national football and baseball championships, whether in N.O or when in SoCal, lol

(I remember as far back as the 1958 Colts-Giants NFL Championship game (" The Game." that made the NFL) when I was watching it with Dad (rooting for the Colts) in our living room, we banished Mom from the room because her very presence seemed always to jinx our favorite teams, lol!)

    2. I pretty much watched the games alone when I was married, too. It's kinda funny, since TSMP now claims to have been a Wings fan since her childhood growing up in Michigan's Thumb in the early '60s. "REALLY?" sez I... "So why didn't you watch any games with ME?"

I remember that Colts - Giants game, too. We spent that day over at one of my Dad's friends' house, who hosted what might have been one of the original "Super Bowl" parties and the women were pretty much unseen (in the kitchen, maybe?). Johnny Unitas was a hero of mine back then.

  3. #18... suffer in silence.
I became inured to pain watching the 49ers in the 50s, 60s, 70s and early 80s.

    1. I was kinda a "suffer in silence" guy for the first ten years I was a Wings fan, and have been pretty much that way where Notre Dame is concerned for the last 20 years or so, too. Until last year.

    2. When I'm watching the Giants play and a batter lets a fat pitch go by, I have a difficult time remaining silent.
I want to say, "What are you thinking?"

Just be polite... that's all I ask.
