I Won't Be Renewing...

... my subscription to this rag:

I subscribed a few months back, have now received four issues and only have one left to go, given the mag is a bi-monthly publication.  I thought subscribing would be a good way to stay in touch with the cigar world, read reviews on what's good and what ain't, and to just generally be better informed about one of the things I dearly love in life.  Well, so much for that.

What I GOT was a hard-copy version of "Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous," along with an overdose of Liberal cant.  I don't need a full-page review of watches that cost $12,000.00 and up.  I don't give a big rat's ass about what any given movie or teevee star smokes (said stars bein' featured on the cover of three out of four issues I've received).  I don't want to read reviews of cigars I can neither buy nor smoke any longer... which is to say Cubans*.  The travel guide articles are mostly for tony golf resorts and I don't whack a lil white ball around a park, nor do I fancy vacationing in such an environment.  It's the same sort of thing with their articles on cars... all expensive in price, with a focus on snob appeal rather than how the cars perform.  Meh.

But here's what REALLY screwed the pooch, a scan of a paragraph from an article about the 20th greatest sports somethings in the past 20 years:

Detroit "Redwings."  Sweep of Buffalo?  Fucking poseurs.

*Full disclosure: I did buy Cubans when I lived in Dee-troit (and also while in London), so there's that.  Mebbe the mag has a big audience in SE Michigan.

    1. Prolly all four. Or Birmingham. Definitely not Ferndale, Oak Park, or Warren. Wait. I lived in Ferndale. Nevermind.

    2. LOL on the Big Four! But say, was Ferndale the template for Martin Mull's Fernwood 2 Night? Just wondering...lol

    3. That was the question in the ol' neighborhood when Mull's show was current. The consensus was "coulda been." ;-)

  2. As a recent entrant into the world of professional fact-checking, which I am now doing on a freelance basis for Discover magazine, it appears to me they don't have any fact-checkers, period. That sort of stuff is kindergarten-easy to get right.

Heck, I don't even need to look it up. Everybody knows the Wings beat the California Golden Seals in '98. Goalie Frank Mahovlich was the MVP. Joe Louis scored a hat trick in the deciding game and they named the arena after him. Sheesh.

    1. Your point about fact-checking is well taken and raises another issue: what else are they missing if they can't get the simple, easy shit right?

  3. Didn't Joe Louis score the first Gordie Howe Hat Trick, evah, in that final game?

I think most cigar smokers wish they could afford better cigars, forget trying to score an overpriced watch while vacationing at Lake Titicaca.

    1. Speaking o' Gordie Howe Hat Tricks... I've seen a couple this season. The commentators always seem to delight in asking each other "Did you know Gordie Howe only had two in his entire career?" Asshats.

Your point about cigar smokers wishing for better sticks is well-taken, too. I'd kinda like to have the wherewithal to smoke 20-dollar cigars all the time. ;-)

    2. Buck, isn't Andy Bathgate of the NY Rangers (he also played for your Redwings, too) the all-time leader in hat-tricks? Or if not he's close..ymmv, however. Wiki is inconclusive..

    3. You didn't look far enough... according to The Wiki Gretzky holds the record with 52.

    4. Yes, I intuitively thought of Wayne. But lazy me was looking only at Bathgate's Wiki page..

  4. Speaking of fact checking... took three tries to spell it correctly because I forgot about spellchecker... I was at a meeting this morning and someone was talking about having to go somewhere with their tail between their legs.
I actually checked to see if they had a tail.
