Our Saturday began in the somewhat usual, customary, and reasonable manner... which is to say coffee, overnight mail, post, blog rounds, etc. Then there was yet another early hockey game but this one began at the much more reasonable hour o' noon, which meant the coffee had been put away (barely), so we had no compunctions about hitting the fridge just after noon. So we did.
But... about that game. I shouldn't have bothered, seein' as how the Beloved Wings lost to the not-quite-worst team in the league, 3-0. The Wings were never in it and looked quite listless, if not supremely unmotivated. But... like Mickey Redmond said... it was one of those days ya just put behind ya and press on. Today was the first game in a home-and-home, the second of which takes place tomorrow at the even better hour of 1500L. I'm thinkin' retribution is in order and I will take steps to ensure a favorable outcome by wearing our Wings sweater for the game. That's why they lost today, Gentle Reader. I was out o' uniform.
Our weather has taken a turn for the worst, as well... seein' as how it's 53 degrees, steady 23 mph winds, with gusts to 36... which means we won't take the remainder o' Happy Hour on the verandah.
On the whole? Bleah. I'm gonna go back to bed.

Out of uniform? By God man, you know better than that!
ReplyDeleteI once wore my Patriots jersey (that the Nuke had given me) to watch a Pat's game, which they lost. So now I'll wear it before a game or after a game. Never during a game.
Ain't superstition a hoot?
I usually wear one of my Red Wings sweaters during a game, but sometimes not. I ALWAYS wear the sweater when I go TO a game!

ReplyDeleteI enjoy sports superstitions. When I was 13 I learned about one of the strangest ones I've ever heard of. I was on a Babe Ruth team and as a 13 year old in a 13-15 league, mainly sat on the bench. My manager was very superstitious and had a routine of breaking popcicle sticks during the game. My job was to gather up enough sticks from under the bleachers and around the concession stand to last nine innings. He broke about 3 or 4 an inning; most of the time when he sat on the bench and our team was in the field, he broke each stick in half and then broke the halves again. Strange. But it worked. We won a trophy in our division.
ReplyDeleteI've had certain hats I wore while watching Cubs games. But my hats don't always work. Sometimes it's the team...
That's definitely the strangest sports superstition I've ever heard, Dan. I hear ya about "sometimes," too.
